Married On Paper To The Billionaire
Chapter 9: The Truth Comes Out

"It's ok. We can try again some other time," said Matt while trying his best to hide his disappointment.

"I'm sorry," Emilia apologized.

"Please, don't be. Would you like something to drink?"

"A glass of water would be fine."

"You got it!" he said a little too cheerfully and she cringed. The awkwardness in the room was unsettling.

He walked across the room to get a glass of water. While he was at it, she watched him and admired his taut ass in those cotton boxers he wore.

Why was she finding it difficult to have sex with Matt? After that impulsive kiss on the farm, she'd been sure that there would be a ginormous cosmic explosion once they joined hips. Instead, her body had gone into panic mode and she'd pushed him away when he tried to touch her. She had never felt so stupid in her life!

"Here you go," he said and offered her the glass of water.

"Thanks," she said and took a few sips before setting it aside on the floor.

Matt's studio apartment was tiny but neat. She liked how he'd sectioned the room with dividers, so that the bed space and living quarters looked like separate rooms.

"Your place is nice," she said. "I didn't get a good look when we first came in."

"Yeah. We were too busy kissing and trying to make out..."

She sighed. "I'm really sorry, Matt. I hope you don't think that I'm just stringing you along this whole time. I thought I was ready."

"It's fine. I understand. I guess rebound relationships don't happen so easily sometimes."

"You deserve to be more than a rebound."

"I'm not complaining. I'm ready to wait until you're ready for me."

"I don't deserve you."

"Don't be ridiculous. I'm the lucky one here."

She smiled. "Thanks."

"You're welcome. Are you hungry?"

"Yeah. I'm craving a very juicy beef burger right now."

"Coming right up!"

"For real?"

"I make the meanest burgers in all of Wyoming."

"Yeah, right!" She laughed.

"Is that a challenge? Do I smell a challenge?"

"You're darn right, you do. Impress me, Chef Matt."

"You asked for it. Now, get ready to be blown away!"

His dramatic tone made her laugh harder. He was such a champ with the way he bounced back from their failed make-out session.

The rest of their time together could've been a lot more uncomfortable but Matt had saved the day with his graciousness. If only she could will her body to respond to his touch as it did with Kane...

"You have to talk to her," said Lillian impatiently. "She's only been here a couple of weeks and half of the domestic staff are already threatening to leave."

"Have you had a conversation with her about this?" Kane asked his sister.

"Yes. She told me she was only letting them know who's the boss."

"Kendra said that?"

"Yes. She's bullying the staff incessantly and it has to stop. Many of them have been with us even before Father died. We can't lose loyal staff because of Kendra's behavior." "Ugh..." he groaned.

He was tired of the unending daily complaints about Kendra. If it wasn't his mother moaning about it, then it was his sister. Only Jack and Samuel seemed to be unbothered by her but he suspected it was because the men were lusting after his fiancée.

"All right, Lillian. I'll talk to her," he conceded.

"Good. And while you're at it, please remind her to ease up on her spending. You know what that means, coming from me."

Lillian was right. She was regarded as the heaviest spender in the family followed by Jack, and the accountants had had to place them on a monthly spending limit to curb that. However, Kendra was already breaking their records and blowing through millions of dollars in a matter of weeks. What the hell was she buying?

"I'll straighten everything out. I promise," he said.

"Glad to hear it," Lillian replied crisply. She checked her wristwatch and sucked her teeth.

"What?"

"I'm ten minutes late for Crystabel's swimming lesson. I'm sure Nanny's supervising her on my behalf. She's getting really good at it."

"Nanny?"

"Crystabel, you dolt!" She said and smacked his shoulder playfully. "She's swimming like a dolphin these days."

"I should compete with her soon."

"You should," Lillian agreed and kissed her brother's cheek. "See you at dinner."

Kane loved hearing about his 5-year-old autistic niece's growth. She was hitting milestone after milestone and making the whole family proud.

His mood soured when he remembered Kendra. She was turning out to be the bane of his existence. He should have never given in to his mother's pressure to propose to her.

He dialled her number and she answered on the final ring. "My love?"

"Where are you?" He asked curtly. Her syrupy tone irritated him.

"In my suite, of course. I've just finished having the most luxurious bath ever."

"Good. I'll be there in two minutes."

He ended the call and stormed out of his home office. He hated the fact that he had to travel to the third floor of the mansion simply because Kendra had refused to move into the room that Emilia had vacated. She'd opted to stay in one of the guest suites upstairs instead.

Thinking about Emilia quenched his anger a little. He'd thought that with time and Kendra close by, he would stop missing her but he'd been wrong!

He dreamt of her every night and imagined he was with her each time he and Kendra made love. It was frustrating but he couldn't figure out a way to purge Emilia out of his system. "Welcome, darling," Kendra crooned when he walked into her suite.

She was lounging on a chaise longue in a white fluffy bathrobe. Her hair was tied with a large white towel and there were two slices of cucumber on her eyes while she sipped champagne. "Ah... this is the life," she sighed contentedly.

There was a masseuse sitting on the floor beside her, massaging her feet. The poor woman looked miserable.

"Please, excuse us," Kane said to the woman. She happily hopped on her feet and ran out of the room like a freed prisoner.

"Is this going to be a long talk? I need those feet massaged badly, so please hurry up and send her back in."

"Excuse me?"

She sighed. "Fine!"

She slowly sat up and peeled the cucumber slices from her eyes. "What?"

"First of all, do not speak to me in that tone ever again. Second, why the hell are you tormenting all the staff? What's your problem?"

"What the actual hell, Kane! You came all the way here to interrupt my relaxation because of that?" "Yes."

"Unbelievable."

"Be nice to the staff or you can leave."

"What?"

"I mean it, Kendra. It doesn't cost you anything to be kind to them. I will not tolerate another complaint about your behavior in this house. Enough is enough."

"Oh, please! Miss me with the crap. Is that really your reason for coming here or are you just trying to pick a fight with me? Because I've had it with you and your uppity family!"

"Oh, no, you don't! You don't get to kick me out, Kane. That's what I do. That's my thing. I have the power to get rid of anybody in this house just as I got rid of that idiot you called a wife." "What did you say?"

Kendra ignored his question and sipped her champagne instead.

"I asked you a question, Kendra. What did you say just now?"

She rubbed her temple with her fingertips as if she was having a headache. "Please, Kane. Let's not fight, ok? I hate it when you're like this."

"Don't make me repeat the question," he said in a low voice that carried a promise of violence.

He'd never hit a woman before in his life but he was afraid that he might descend heavily on Kendra if she didn't stop playing games with him.

"You heard what I said," she fired back defiantly. "Yes, I kicked her out!"

"Wait a minute. So, Emilia was right. You did push her down the stairs!"

"That's not what I said. I said I kicked her out. Not pushed her downstairs."

"You're a liar!"

"We're all liars. Everyone says whatever they have to say to get out of trouble. That's what I did. Sue me!"

Kane was dazed. What had he done?

"And the photos of Emilia with her ex-boyfriend?"

"What has that got to do with me?"

"You set her up, didn't you?"

She shrugged and sipped her champagne. She was not apologetic one bit.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to Kane. It was right then that he finally figured out what was wrong in the room.

"Why are you drinking champagne, Kendra?"

"Why not? I love it."

She still didn't realize her blunder. Kane knew the answer to his next question but he asked her anyway. "Are you truly pregnant?"

She smiled slowly and said, "What do you think?"
