Mating the Female Alpha
Chapter 37 – Disgusted with the alpha king

Bernice

I woke up with a headache. Landry wasn't anywhere to be seen, but from his lingering scent, I know he was here recently. But there is also another lingering scent that I couldn't shake. It smelled familiar but I couldn't figure out where I remember the scent from. I can tell the fever is gone, thankfully. There is also a manila envelope that's sitting on the pillow beside me.

I frown as I take the folder into my hands. It definitely wasn't here when I fell asleep. I wonder who dropped this off? From the scent, it wasn't from Landry. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the contents of this envelope. As I opened it, I saw a few different pieces of paper that appeared to be important documents.

It was labeled: The raid on vampires.

I gasped as I continued to read the information on the papers. It was about a vampire attack a few years ago. It says that Landry had led a raid in the vampire territory that ultimately caused a vampire retaliation attack. Because of this attack, the vampires felt the need to get revenge and attacked the werewolf territory in return. Which also caused the deaths of dozens of men on the werewolf territory.

My heart weighs heavily in my chest as I scanned these documents. They are real legal documents that haven't been seen by the public eye. It was a cover-up from Landry himself. He led a raid that caused a dozen deaths of his men. How could something like this happen?

I suddenly feel like I can't breathe as I shove the papers back into the manila folder. Whoever sent this to me, wanted me to know that Landry isn't whom I thought he was. He doesn't care about his people. He jeopardized their lives so he can get his loot.

He jeopardized my life.

I remember that attack; none of us understood where it came from and why the vampires acted as though they were trying to get revenge. I remember the deaths and how close I came to dying myself. It was all because of Alpha King Landry. I can't help but feel angry at the betrayal. By the time he arrives in my room, I'm already fuming. He frowns at me as if he doesn't understand where this new attitude change is coming from. He must have known I would find out by now about his selfishness.

"What is it?" He asks as he stares around my reddened face. "Are you going into heat again?"

"I feel incredibly stupid," I snap at him. "Do you really think I wouldn't have found out about this?"

I throw the manila folder at him, and his frown deepens. Maybe he doesn't know what the contents of the folder contain, but he was soon going to find out once he opens it.

"I'm not sure what this is," he says softly as he opens the folder.

I saw realization crossing his features as he reads the papers; his face falling slightly and his shoulders slumping in defeat. He knows he's caught. He knows just how furious and hurt I am at finding this new information. I'm not going to let him live this down.

I try to get out of bed, but he stops me with his strong hands. Pushing me back down till I give up.

"Let me leave," I order, fury rising through me.

"Just let me speak first," he pleads. I can see in his eyes how remorseful he's feeling. Does he really think he's not in the wrong here?

My wolf was pleading for me to calm down and listen to what he had to say. But I'm ignoring her as well. She can't be serious.

"I'm not listening to a thing you have to say," I argue in return. "You killed dozens of your own men for selfish reasons. Why would I listen to you?"

"They had something I needed. I went after them to get it. It isn't how it seems," he says in return, keeping his tone calm. "I would never purposely put my people in danger. You need to believe that."

"I don't know what to believe anymore," I huffed. "It seems pretty bad, Landry. You didn't tell your men the reasoning behind this raid. You made them promise their silence so nobody else would find out that you are at fault for the death of your people. How selfish can one get?"

"It wasn't for a selfish reason..." he breathes, staring down at his hands. "I'm sorry if you feel like it was."

Tears are threatening to escape my eyes, but I push them back. I refuse to show him any kind of signs of weakness.

"You expect me to believe that you would do something like this for a reason that isn't selfish?" I ask.

My heart feels broken after finding out this information. I no longer wish to speak to him about this matter. I don't want anything to do with him. I want to leave. I want to return to my pack and finish as the female alpha. I want to finish my short life with the little bit of dignity I have left.

...

Landry

She was never supposed to find out this information. She was so angry with him that she wouldn't even stop for a moment to speak with him. He isn't even sure what he would say to her, even if she would listen. How can he tell her that he went to the vampire territory to get a medication that they had to cure his sister of a painful disease that was about to take her life?

It's something Jessie doesn't want anyone to know about. Landry made a promise to her that nobody would ever find out about the disease. She caught it during one of her travels and she was embarrassed about it. The only ones that had a cure were the vampires and they refused to comply and give them what they wanted. So, Landry had to take matters into his own hands and enforced a raid.

The problem was, they didn't know where the vampires kept the medication. So, they had to perform a proper raid. They raided the entire territory until they found the medication, curing Jessie.

There was no way Landry could predict that the vampires would retaliate with ten times the strength and kill off many of Landry's fighters. He spent a long time hiding this information, but now Bernice somehow uncovered it.

How did she even find out about this information? Did someone send it to her? She hasn't left this bed all night and now she was holding a manila folder with information that was only stored on his computer. "So, you have nothing more to say to me?" Bernice asks as she drags herself out of bed.

She's still weak and her body wobbles a little as she makes her way to her clothes on the other side of the room.

"I wish you would calm down," Landry says, trying to keep his tone even and calm.

"Calm down?" She hisses, spinning around and narrowing her eyes at him. "I can't even look at you, Landry. I don't want to be here anymore. I'm going home."

"What?" He gasps, his heart weighing heavily in his chest. "You are home!"

"My real home," she says in return. "I'm returning to the sunset pack."
