Mating the Female Alpha -
Chapter 46 – The flutter in my heart
Bernice's POV
I wasn't shot.
But maybe it was an underlying heart condition that was causing me to feel like this.
That had to be it.
It was because of my Alpha medication; I didn't have long to live. I could feel it. The strange fluttering in my heart was proof of that. I was starting to feel sick to my stomach; maybe even a little lightheaded.
Landry pulled himself away from his sister and she wiped the remaining tears out of her eyes. She was still trembling uncontrollably, and she bit onto her bottom lip to keep herself from sobbing again. I knew this was a lot for her to handle. I couldn't imagine that this happened to her a lot.
"Denise... you saved my life," she said in a mere whisper as she rushed toward me. Now it was my turn to receive a hug. I stood still, trying to calm my rapid heartbeat as she wrapped her arms around me. She was oddly stronger than she looked. She wrapped me in a tight hug, and I almost couldn't breathe. "I don't know what to say... how did you get so brave? When did you learn to fight like that?"
I had to give her an excuse or else my cover would be blown.
"I had brothers," I told her honestly. "They were a part of the warriors, but died. They taught me a little about fighting. They wanted me to learn to protect myself."
I met Landry's eyes and he rose his brows, impressed with my quick excuse. It wasn't a complete lie. Just not the full truth.
"I see," she said, pulling away from me with tear-filled eyes. "I feel so stupid. I knew something was off... but I had no idea that she was... that she was a..."
"I know..." I say in return, hugging her again. "It's okay now."
"This is the second time a vampire had gotten into my palace. I had no idea that my former maid was one... and now this..."
"Don't beat yourself up, Jessie," Landry says, stepping beside his sister. "I'm going to make sure this doesn't happen again. I'll have more guards around your palace to keep you protected."
"I'm the older sister," she said, shaking her head, and gazing up at him. "I should be the one protecting you. I need to be smarter."
"I'm the king," he says, giving her a small smile. "It's my job to protect everybody, including you. Especially you."
Her face reddens slightly, and I could see the gratitude in her eyes, even though she doesn't express it out loud.
My heart fluttered again, and I staggered backward at the strange sensation. My breath got caught in my throat and I almost feel like vomiting.
Something was seriously wrong.
This time, Landry, and Jessie both notice my discomfort.
"Is something wrong?" Landry asks, rushing to my side.
I don't want to reveal my weakness to him, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong with me. I knew I was dying; it was only a matter of time before I passed out completely. "I..." I tried to say but my words got caught in my throat. "I think I need a doctor."
...
We returned to Landry's palace, and he brought me to my room right away. It was late and I was feeling tired after the day that I'd had. I didn't feel like I was getting a fever, but my body was warm. Perhaps I was going into heat.
Landry leaned down and pressed his lips against mine, causing my heart to flutter once again. I pulled away from him quickly, gasping for breath. He looked startled by my rejection, maybe even a little hurt. "The doctor will be here shortly, per request," he says with a frown as he felt my forehead. "You're a little warm. Perhaps you are getting another fever."
It wasn't like me to want a doctor. But I was hoping they could give me some kind of medication to help the discomfort I was feeling in my heart.
Every time I looked at Landry, I would feel that strange flutter. I didn't want to hurt him and tell him that he was the one making me ill.
How could I put this into words?
Was Landry the one making me sick?
As promised the doctor arrived shortly after and did a few tests. He started by checking on my heart. He didn't seem worried, which was a relief. Then, he did some bloodwork and some other test work. After what felt like an eternity, he finally finished, concluding that there was nothing wrong.
"There has to be something wrong," I say to him, narrowing my eyes to focus on him. "I feel sick. My heart feels weird. Please, try another test."
"I'm sorry, but I already ran all the necessary tests. I'm telling you, there is nothing wrong with you."
I felt tears of frustration burn in my eyes. I knew doctors were useless.
"I'll go grab you a glass of water," Landry says with a worried frown before he leaves the room.
I looked back up at the doctor who was examining the last of the test results.
"It's almost like you want something to be wrong," he pointed out. "Are you sure there's nothing more you aren't telling me?"
How could I tell him that I feel this heart flutter whenever Landry was around? As soon as Landry left the room, my heart felt like it had gone back to normal.
I shook my head, ignoring the tears that were threatening to escape my eyes. Being an omega, I was now allowed to show my emotions; although, that didn't make it any easier.
"Hmmm," he says as he checks my heartbeat once again. "Strange. Your heart was beating fast moments ago, but now it has slowed down."
"See," I said, annoyed. "I told you something was wrong."
"I don't think anything physical is wrong. It almost seems like your heart rate slowed down as soon as the Alpha King left the room. It could be that..."
"No," I say to him, knowing what he was getting at. "It has nothing to do with Alpha Landry."
He opened his mouth to say more, to probably protest, but Landry returned with a glass of water as promised.
"Did we figure anything out?" He asks, handing me the water.
I look over at the doctor, pleading with my eyes for him not to say anything. The last thing I wanted was for Landry to think he was making me ill. "No," the doctor said, picking up on my cues. "I'm sorry, Alpha King. But I can't find anything wrong with her. Perhaps she just needs rest." "A lot has happened today," he agreed. "Let's see how you feel in the morning. If you still feel unwell, then we will figure it out tomorrow."
I nod, agreeing. The doctor gave me one last look before packing his belongings. He bowed to Alpha King Landry before leaving the room. Landry stared me over carefully for a moment, trying to assess my face. I feel my features growing warm under his gaze.
"I'll let you rest," he says with a fond, yet worried smile. "I must take care of some things this evening. I'll come to check on you later." I say nothing as he leaves.
As I watch the door closing behind him, I press the palm of my hand to my heart, feeling it rapidly flutter once again.
