Chapter 70 – He had crossed the line.

Bernice's POV What did he just say?

My eyes opened quickly as I looked over at Landry who remained beside me, staring at me with a gaze I didn't recognize. I knew it was filled with love and admiration, but there was something else there too. Something different; something

real.

"What?" I asked, finding my voice.

"I wish to make you my luna," he clarified, squeezing my hand gently. "It's no secret that I love you. And I think you might love me too."

He remembered that I told him that I loved him before he passed out the other day?

He hasn't said anything up until that moment, so I assumed he didn't hear me. There was a part of me that hoped he didn't hear me. My heart felt so conflicted; I worried about giving him myself and then dying before we have a chance of becoming anything.

I wasn't even sure if there was anything to become.

I'm still going to die in a few months, which meant loving him was pointless. Loving me was pointless.

I sat up, grabbing a sheet in the process and covering my naked body.

"Bernice "

"I can't marry you," I found myself saying quickly. "I'm not going to live much longer. You know this; promising you a lifetime together would be unfair."

"I'm not going to let you die..." he said, sitting up as well.

"Why must we have the same argument?" I asked. "Why can't you just let me go-"

"As long as I am alive, I will never stop trying. I won't give up and I wish you wouldn't either."

"I have accepted my fate a long time ago," I told him, tears filling my eyes. "There isn't anything you can "

"I told you; we have a lead."

"It'll lead to disappointment," I say firmly.

I didn't wish to speak about this anymore; my heart was weighing heavily in my chest. I hated this and I hated that he wouldn't accept this.

"You don't know that," he said, just as firmly.

"Don't you think I would have figured out if there was a cure by now?"

"Did you know your father got the medication from a sorcerer? Which means they probably came up with a cure too..."

"Wait, my father? What do you mean?"

"Jessie and I went to see him..."

"You did what?" I snapped, I stood from the bed quickly, taking the sheets with me.

"We went to see your father to find out where he got the medication. It's a potion that used dark magic. I get that dark magic has its costs, but whoever created the potion, must have an antidote..." "You went to see my father?" I shouted. "Are you out of your mind? What gives you the right?"

"If it means saving you..."

"NOTHING can save me, Landry. Can't you get that through your head?" I yelled, tears falling from my eyes.

I was furious.

I couldn't believe he went behind my back and went to see my father. Not to mention took Jessie there as well. He has seriously lost his mind.

"No," he said, shaking his head. He tucked his manhood back into his pants before standing as well. "I can't get that through my head. As your Alpha-"

"As my Alpha, you've overstepped," I said, narrowing my eyes at him. "You shouldn't have gone to see my father. He doesn't care if I live or die... what if my brother was there and heard you?"

I had lied to Caleb the other day when I told him that nothing was wrong. If he knew that I was going to die because of the medication I'd taken to become an Alpha, to get him ready to be Alpha, it would break his heart. I couldn't risk having him find out. He thinks I'm going to live to help him, and I didn't want him to think otherwise.

"He wasn't there."

"But he could have been," I say to him. "You were careless. You shouldn't have gone there. I've told you countless times about the costs. I did it for my pack... I turned myself into an Alpha with the medication so I can protect my pack and fight alongside you. I did it to prepare my brother to become the next Alpha of Sunset Pack. Because of that, I'm going to die at 25. It would break his heart if he knew the truth, Landry. He can't know the truth. You were careless." "Bernice..."

"I'm going to take a shower."

I started toward the bathroom; I couldn't be in there with him anymore.

What was he thinking?

"You are being cruel," Julia breathed in my mind. "He was only trying to help. He didn't mean any harm."

"It could have been bad," I said in return to my wolf, shaking my head. "Caleb could have heard..."

"But he didn't. You are overreacting. Are you sure this isn't because he told you how he felt? Are you sure you aren't reflecting because you're scared?"

"I'm thinking about my brother. It would break his heart if he knew the truth. I can't risk that, and Landry knows that. But he still overstepped and went there anyways. I can't forgive him for this." "There was no harm."

"No harm? It gave both Landry and Jessie false hope. It's going to leave them disappointed."

"Are you worried about them being disappointed, or you?" Julia asked "You've been let down so many times in the past and you're afraid it's just going to happen again. Why can't you trust him as I do?"

As I stared myself over in the mirror of the bathroom; I was feeling well again after the blood treatment. I was feeling on top of the world after Landry and me.... My face reddened at the memory of our recent events. It felt different; it was tender and loving.

"It's because you're in love with him," Julia said with exaggeration in her tone. "Stop denying yourself a good thing."

I shook my head; not wanting to listen to her anymore. I just wanted silence.

Cora's POV

"Oh, my goddess," Cora gasped as she held her phone to her ear.

She had heard everything that was being spoken about in Denise's room... or should she say, Bernice.

Cora, of course, had heard about the female Alpha. But she never imagined that she was under her nose this entire time. Denise and Bernice were one and the same.

She grabbed her phone and dialed the number of her friend.

"You will never believe this," Cora said as soon as her friend answered. She explained what she had found out. "When word gets out about this, the kingdom will do our job for us. There's no way they would want to keep her around after all the lies. They will overrule Landry and kick him out of power. This is unforgivable on his part."

"Send me the audio... I'll make sure everyone knows who this bitch really is."
