Chapter 8 The Maid

Jessie's POV

To Jessie's shock, her brother's palace is incredibly heavily-guarded. So much so that the guards will not even permit her to enter. She cannot believe it.

"But I am the Alpha King's sister!" she argues. "The most honored princess of the Wolf Clan!"

Her words have no effect on the guards, frustrating her. They simply stand before the doors, blocking entrance to her and her maids.

"Let me in!" she tries again, and one of the guards gives her an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry, Princess, but this is an order from the Alpha King."

That just intrigues Jessie's curiosity even more. She looks at her maids, thinking for a long moment, before beckoning them to the side, out of sight of the guards. She leans in close, whispering to be sure they aren't overheard.

"I need you to pretend to be me, and I'll pretend to be you," she directs her similar-looking maid. "You must pretend to faint, and I will sneak in dressed as you."

"Yes, Your Highness," the maid replies. "That is no problem."

They quickly exchange clothes and Jessie's lookalike maid walks back to the palace doors with the rest.

"Oh!" she cries dramatically, pressing her hand to her head. "Oh, I feel ill!"

With that, she crumples to the ground, attracting the attention of the guards, who rush to her side, believing her to be Jessie. Jessie, watching from a hidden spot around the corner, pumps her fist in victory and creeps past the group, through the front doors, safe in her disguise as a maid.

Excitement bubbles in Jessie's blood - ever since their parents died, it was Landry who took up the burden of the family, acting as its head and allowing Jessie to live a worry-free life. Because of that, Jessie's natural curiosity is high, and she is quite carefree.

It is this carefree attitude that leads her deeper into the palace.

"I must see how stunning this woman Landry brought home is!"

Bernice POV

I am no fool. I may be an Omega, but I have fought as an Alpha for years and I have formidable observational skills. I can tell immediately that this maid is anything but a maid.

For one, she is too cheerful, too casual as she greets me. Her eyes are alight with too much interest, and besides all that, she looks too similar to Landry to be anyone but his sister, the Princess. She must have heard that Landry brought me home and come to investigate.

I admire her courage. It's for that reason I allow her to stay - it's like her carefree attitude has infected me as well. I giggle as I think of how worried Landry would be when he hears that his sister invaded the castle, how frightened he would be that the Princess would recognize me.

But he has nothing to worry about.

I am not stupid enough to give my position up. I am not a seasoned fighter for nothing - I bury the Alpha characteristics I worked so hard to learn under several layers in my heart, bringing out the soft, plump Omega features I know I still have, despite my best attempts.

I bat my eyes at Jessie and the Princess falls for it, sitting herself beside me and calling the maid.

"Maid! Fetch some fruit, will you? I must speak with my brother's Omega."

I don't show her how much I hate hearing that phrase - I am not anybody's anything! But I am in disguise so I giggle, toss my head, and fall into conversation with the Princess.

"Your disguise to gain access to the palace was very smart," I compliment her, and Jessie giggles, pressing a hand to her mouth. I select a grape from the platter that the maid brings and bite into it. It's juicy and sweet, bursting in my mouth. I suppress a moan. The taste is incredible.

"Well, I had to meet the first woman Landry has brought home," Jessie says, winking at me. I flush unexpectedly - if only Jessie knew. Landry only brought me home to interrogate me. I am not to be the Luna Queen.

But it is nice to have the Princess pretend.

"Am I really?" I play along. "Surely an Alpha as noble as Landry would have Omegas by the hundreds?"

"Oh, certainly," Jessie says, then lowers her voice, like it's a secret. "There have been plenty who would have loved his attention. But he spends so long fighting - some think he has a thing for that female Alpha of Sunset Pack, the one he spends so much time with!"

I flush hotly. Luckily, Jessie doesn't seem to notice and continues to talk.

"I'm sure I would love my brother no matter what, but it is nice to see him bring an Omega home like normal!"

Just then, the door bursts open, revealing Landry, panting heavily, eyes wild and hair mussed. He looks frantic, like his worst nightmare had come true, and for some reason, that sets Jessie and I off!

We look at each other and burst into hysterical giggles. I can't say why, perhaps it's the combination of Landry's unfounded worry and the fact that Jessie doesn't know the whole story, but it's unbearably funny to me for some reason. "What is going on here?" he growls out the demand, looking from me to the Princess. His hands are clenched into fists at his sides and his eyes are wild and I carefully lick my lips, watching him instantly notice the movement. Princess Jessie stands, brushing down her clothes before looking her brother in the eye.

"I have come to meet your Omega," she says, then narrows her eyes and points at him. "I am very happy with her, Landry, and I will be visiting her again. It's about time you brought home a soft and cuddly Omega, and you better treat her right! I will be visiting again!"

Landry's eyes widen. He is clearly speechless. I giggle harder- soft and cuddly! If Jessie had seen me in battle, ripping open vampire's throats, she would faint with horror! Soft and cuddly, my ass.

Still, I am pretending, so I toss my head, shaking my soft blonde hair, and making Jessie smile before she flounces from the room, leaving Landry and I alone.

I take the opportunity to drop my Omega appearance, taking back the Alpha persona I'd worked so hard on. Landry narrows his eyes at me, looking me up and down, before he growls out: "What is going on here? If you are truly a spy, trained to change your appearance at will, I will not go easy on you."
