Mother

Chapter 8

Ethan’s eyes reddened slightly as he spoke, “Sienna, we can’t bring back the dead. Even if you win this lawsuit, will it bring your mother back to life?”

“You know how powerful my mother is. Going against her won’t do you any good,” he added.

“So what?” I retorted. “My mom is gone, but you’re all still here. If I don’t seek justice for her, I’m not worthy of being her daughter. I don’t care if it’s your mother – she can’t control everything.”

I turned away, heading upstairs and slamming the door behind me.

Ethan lingered downstairs for a long while.

Soon, a light rain began to fall, quickly turning into a downpour that left him drenched.

Watching this scene, I felt only bitter irony. His show of remorse now was too little, too late. Mom’s passing had taken my love for him with it.

For several days after that, Ethan didn’t bother me.

I heard from friends that he’d fallen ill with a high fever.

I found myself wishing it had been worse.

After being fired, the company gave me a substantial severance package.

I didn’t look for another job.

Instead, I filed a lawsuit against Ethan, Mia, Tom, and others for negligent homicide.

The day Ethan received the summons, he came knocking at my door.

Cautiously gauging my mood, he put on a placating smile. “Sienna, I’ve convinced my mother. If you drop the lawsuit, she’ll let me marry you.”

“What did you say?

I asked in disbelief.

He repeated eagerly, “Marry me. I’ll give you a home, anything you want. I won’t make I’ll even stop seeing Mia.”
