Ruby

POV

We head to the Alpha dining room. I linked my parents to join us this morning for breakfast. I have no idea how this conversation will go, but it's important to my mate, so it's important to me. Maverick squeezes my hand before we enter the dining room. We sit down and the omegas place a plate down in front of us. Once we are alone, my mother gives me a knowing look. "I assume that you wanted to discuss something important with us, Ruby. I remember when your father and I first mated we shared many meals in our room." "Really mom, is that necessary," I say with a look of disgust. "I do not want to think about you and dad mating." My father growls low at what my mother is insinuating is happening when Maverick and I are upstairs. My mother slaps his arm and Maverick chuckles. I love my family, but it doesn't make me any less nervous to talk about me turning Maverick into a wolf. "Is everything alright Ruby", my father asks. Before I can answer, Maverick does. He wanted to be the one to talk to my parents about his wishes, which I completely respect. "Everything is great between Ruby and I. I'm so grateful that I found her and she accepted me without question." He takes a deep breath before he continues. "Gabby, please know that what I'm about to ask is in no way meant to be disrespectful to the amazing Alpha you are. I don't make this request lightly and I have given it a lot of thought. I would like to be turned into a wolf. I know in my heart this is what was meant to be. I want Ruby to turn me." I squeeze his hand to show my support. My parents are both quiet before my father finally turns to me. "How do you feel about this Ruby?" "It's my responsibility to listen to my mate's wants and needs just as I would want him to do for me. We discussed this and my only question is what is the risk to Maverick?" "You are fated mates, which significantly reduces the risk of death to Maverick", my father says. The word death in the same sentence with Maverick's name makes bile rise in my throat. "The change always comes with risks. It is typically only performed as a last resort to save a human mate that has been fatally wounded", my father says. My resolve to honor Maverick's request is faltering with my father's words. I can't lose him. Gemma and I wouldn't survive losing him. She whimpers in my mind agreeing with my thoughts. "Love, I need you to trust me. I truly believe that I am meant to be a wolf. I have dreamed of wolves all my life but never thought anything of it" he links me. "Maverick, can I ask you a question," my mother says, getting my attention. "Of course, Gabby." "Who do you want this change for you, the pack, or Ruby?" He seems deep in thought for a moment. "I know how bad this is going to sound but it's for me. I need to feel whole in order to be the best mate to Ruby and the best Alpha to our pack." My heart clenches at his words. My mother smiles and nods.

"Mom, did you ever think about going through the change?" She smiles at me with love and understanding in her eyes. "I would be lying if I said no. Your father and I discussed it and he asked me the same question I just asked Maverick. The difference was that my answer was for him and the pack. I never felt like part of me was missing. After a long discussion, I decided that I was happy being who I was and I didn't need a wolf to feel complete", she says, smiling at Maverick. "This is a decision that you both have to agree upon. The outcome will affect you both" my father says. Maverick looks into my eyes and in this moment, I know that he needs this as much as he need me. I will do whatever it takes to give my mate what he needs to be who he feels he is destined to be. Maverick POV

I hate that my request to become a wolf is worrying Ruby. I don't know why I'm not worried, but I'm not. She squeezes my hand "I will honor Maverick's choice to become a wolf", Ruby says, and a sense of relief washes over me. I can see Lake is linking with someone and a few seconds later Tabby appears, followed by a knock on the office door. A man walks in that I've never seen before. "Maverick, this is the pack doctor. He and Tabby will be present during the change. Tomorrow is the new moon and will be the best time for the change to take place", Lake says. I feel excited but nervous. I realize that the nervousness is not my own emotion. I look at Ruby and she smiles but it doesn't reach her eyes. I reach over, pulling Ruby into my lap. I know she needs me close right now. Lake growls low and Gabby smacks him. "He is her mate, so stop growling." Ruby chuckles with her head tucked into my chest. I hold her for a few minutes and when she pulls back, she presses a soft kiss to my lips. She goes to move but I hold her in place. After we explain everything to Tabby and the pack doctor. I swear I see pride in Tabby's eyes. "Ruby, we won't let anything happen to Maverick", Tabby says. I smile, I trust Tabby completely. Tomorrow I will be a wolf and I will mark Ruby as mine as it was meant to be. After we discuss timing and everything that will happen during the changing process, we decide to find Autumn and Connor. Ruby and I talked about them assuming the Beta positions during the upcoming ceremony. I love the thought of making Autumn and Connor our Betas. I just hope that Connor thought about what I said last night and talked to his mate about how he was feeling. We reach the cottage and Ruby knocks. The door opens and Jonathon smiles. "She isn't here, she stayed in the pack house last night." I watch Ruby link and she smiles. She takes my hand and leads me to the pack house. We are outside a door on the second floor and Ruby knocks. The door opens and I can't help the smile that spreads across my face. Connor is standing in his boxer briefs with a fresh mark on his neck. He looks like we woke him as he runs his hand through his disheveled hair. Before I can pull Ruby away, she pushes past Connor and jumps on the bed. "You two marked and mated" she squeals as she wraps Autumn in a hug. I reach out and Connor takes my hand to shake. I pull him into a hug. "Congratulations man" I say. "Thanks, I love you Maverick, but I need to put pants on if you're going to hug me like this." I push him away and punch him in the arm. "Ouch" he feigns injury and Autumn growls. She slaps her hand over her mouth and I can't help but laugh.

Autumn POV

After our long talk last night, I wanted to spend the night with Connor. I wanted him to hold me while we slept. I know my mother wouldn't mind us staying in my room in the cottage, but my father would definitely give Connor a hard time. I took him to a guest room and we talked until the sun started to rise. We had planned on waiting to mate and mark until after we discussed everything with Ruby and Maverick, but Connor said that with the change or not, he was my mate. Summer and I lost all control when he spoke those words and I don't regret what happened for a second. His mark on my neck is beautiful with purple swirls made by my magic that I passed to him. Seeing our mark on Connor's neck feels amazing. It's strange but beautiful. Connor's mark has two wolves with a purple moon. The purple color of my magic. We finally passed out in each other's arms. Ruby linked me, waking me up. "Where are you, Autumn?" I tell her where we are knowing she will show up soon. Connor is snoring softly next to me and I couldn't be more in love with this man. A bang on the door wakes him up. He turns to me with a look of confusion. "It's Ruby and Maverick" I say, and he rolls his eyes before he presses a soft kiss to my lips.

Once the door is open, Ruby bounds inside jumping on me. "I'm so happy for you Autumn. You deserve all the happiness your mate can give you." I kiss her cheek and she squeezes me tight. "Are you guys awake enough to come to our office to talk about something important", Ruby says. I stiffen thinking about the attack from last night. "It's nothing about the attack Autumn. Just get dressed and meet us in the office." I relax and they leave. Connor pulls me into his arms and kisses me like I'm the air he needs to breathe. Summer purrs and I laugh against his lips. He pulls back looking confused. "Summer is purring at her new mate." He puffs out his chest and smiles like he won the lottery. Now I laugh out loud. He releases me and I turn to head toward the bathroom. He swats my a** and I jump at the contact. He laughs this time and I close the door behind me. We both get dressed and I lead him to Ruby's office. We take a seat across from Ruby and Maverick.

Ruby POV

"We want to congratulate you guys again on your mating." "Thank you" they both say in unison. Autumn's hand is in Connors. I'm happy I don't have to kick his a**. "Maverick and I will be having our ceremony in a week. Autumn, you know how important you are to me and the pack. That is why I am asking you and Connor to become our Betas." She smiles and I can see unshed tears in her eyes. I see questions in Connor's eyes. "Betas of the pack are the second in command. They help the Alphas to keep the pack running." I see concern flash in his eyes and I know exactly what he is thinking. He looks at Autumn and they have a private conversation. Autumn and Connor turn back to us. "We are honored to be your Betas. We would also like to discuss something else." "Of course, Autumn." "Connor would like to be changed into a wolf and I would like to do it for him if you both agree." I look at Maverick wondering if they discussed this last night in my office. "We discussed not being able to help with the attacks, but we never talked about being changed" Maverick says through our link. "Ruby, I know this is a lot to ask." I cut her off by raising my hand. "It's not that Autumn. I was taken back because Maverick has asked for the same thing." Autumn looks between Maverick and Connor. "They didn't talk about this before they spoke to us. I had the same thought." Autumn smiles "it seems our mates think alike." "That they do and after speaking with my parents, the pack doctor, and your mother, we will be performing the change tomorrow with the new moon. It seems we will be performing two changes tomorrow" I say with a smile. Victor POV

"I want to know who is responsible for her death, father." "Victor the king is handling it. He already has a prisoner in the cells. We will lay your sister to rest tomorrow and you will not cause trouble for the rogues. The dragons are good to us and have always provided for what we need." You're not a little bit interested in knowing who killed your daughter." My father growls and I drop my gaze. "Do not disrespect me. I am burying my child and I will not bury another just so you can know the evil that took your sister from us. Stay away from that castle unless you are called upon. Do you understand me, Victor?" I nod and he growls again. "With words, Victor" he says. "I will stay away from the castle unless I am called upon." He nods and goes to tend to my sister's arrangements. Lyle is seething that someone has taken our precious sister from us. "I can't let this go, Lyle." "I agree Victor, someone needs to pay by our hands." Sitting in a cell is not punishment enough for murder. Someone is going to suffer the same fate they inflicted upon my precious girl, even if my father is too afraid to push the issue with the dragons. I leave the cottages and head toward the rear entrance to the castle. I'm friendly with some of the guards and maybe they can give me information about who they have locked up in the cells. The door flies open and two men carrying the former king storm out. Their eyes get big when they notice me. "Leave rogue, this is none of your concern." I growl and link my father. I hold my ground even though one breath from these dragons could burn me alive.
