Hearing the Pendleton relatives gossip about Esther, Sadie leaned in and whispered, "Don't let it bother you. They don't know what they're talking about." Esther was well aware of how the Quills treated her. A few snide remarks from others wouldn't change her feelings toward her family. "I know."

Sadie wrapped her arm around Esther's shoulders and said affectionately, "Just wait. I'll make them regret this."

Sadie pushed open the door with determination and entered the room. "Go ahead, keep talking! I want to hear more juicy gossip!"

The Pendleton relatives looked at each other nervously, like deer caught in headlights, as if they wished they could disappear.

But Sadie wasn't going to let them off the hook. She took out her phone and called Chadwick. "Chadwick, it's Sadie. Can you come to the ladies' makeup room?"

Tension filled the room. These women knew Sadie well enough to understand that she could outtalk anyone. They also knew she was the prized possession of the Quill family. Even if they had issues with her, they wouldn't dare badmouth her openly.

"Ms. Quill, today is a happy day for Chadwick-"

Sadie cut it in and said, "Happy day? What's the big deal? It's either an engagement or a wedding. If you think so little of our family, why is Chadwick marrying into it?"

As soon as Chadwick entered the room, everyone fell silent, their heads bowed.

"So, what's going on here?"

Sadie said sarcastically, "Chadwick, it seems your family doesn't hold us in high regard―"

Before she could say more, Chadwick interrupted her and confronted one of the older women. "You! Explain yourself!"

"It was just idle talk among us women," the woman stammered.

Sadie scoffed. "So you can gossip behind my back but can't say it to his face? Should I pull up the security footage and show Chadwick what you've been saying?"

Chadwick's stern gaze swept the room, quieting the group of aunts and cousins, who all lowered their heads.

Then he walked over to Esther, gripping her shoulder as if claiming his territory. "Everyone, look at me!" Heads snapped up, focusing on Esther's radiant face.

"Take a good look. This is my future wife. If any of you dare speak ill of her again, I'll deal with them!"

Esther shivered when Chadwick touched her as if a snake had bitten her.

"Do you understand?"

"Yes!"

"Leave!"

The room emptied in an instant, the Pendletons scattering as if they were fleeing a fire.

Chadwick kept his arm around Esther as they entered the dining room.

Esther locked eyes with a man in a suit in the crowd.

It was Bradley.
