Tarryn

Alex and I are taken to the enemy’s territory. Pushed into a car in broad daylight and then taken to a city named Haven. The Howler pack rules here, but there are a lot of supernatural creatures living in Haven. That’s what makes it so dangerous.

Though, I don’t get to see much of Haven. My time is spent staring into the basement wall where I’m locked in a cell. Alex is in the cell in front of mine, and he is staring down at the floor.

It finally hit him that the b***d on Marissa’s hands was from his brother, and now he is dealing with the grief of having lost his big brother. I didn’t like Asher… but Alex isn’t a bad person.

My heart hurts for him, and I sigh.

I want to take Alex’s mind off his dead brother and make him stop sniffling. The first thing that comes to mind is to mess with him, try to make him fight me—it’s better than his tears!

I glare through the bars of my cell. “It’s definitely your fault that we got captured! If only we had run to the store to get bottled water instead! But no, you wanted lake water!”

While sobbing, Alex lifts his head. “Because I’m not a snob…”

He makes this sound as if he is holding back his tears, and I take a deep breath. How am I the strong one out of us two?! I want to be the one who is crying and shuddering, but I can’t! Not when he is bawling his eyes out!

I say ” Christ!” not because I’m religious but because I don’t know what else to say. “Pull yourself together, Willis!” I use his last name, and it works—Alex snorts a half-hearted laugh.

“I’m trying… but my brother he…”

“I know!” My heart is hurting. “But we must be plotting to get out of here—we can cry later over our dead pack members!”

“Give me a break, Tarryn…” Alex gives me a broken look. His eyes are all puffy and red. I feel evil for trying to make him stop letting out his emotions, but if we stay here, there is no telling when that Marissa will come to claim Alex.

“Alex, I’m sorry for your loss,” I mean my words, and my voice is calm. “But that Marissa… she is a bad person, and if we stay here, then she is going to—”

“I don’t care,” his tired, puffy eyes meet mine. “Marissa killed Asher and Allen—both my brothers. They were both by the fire, and they both died because I left them…” his bottom l*p trembles. “I tried to be better. I tried to help you and the pack, and now I’m being punished for leaving my brothers behind.”

I tried to help you and the pack, and now I’m being punished for leaving my brothers behind.”

Oh my god.

Alex cries louder, and there is nothing I can do for him. He is a good kid—he proved that with what he just told me. And… he is just a kid. The kid isn’t even eighteen, and s**t!

“It’s not your fault that they died,” I say, even though I know that my words will likely do nothing. “You can’t blame yourself for what the Howler pack did, Alex! You did nothing wrong!”

There is no reaction, and I inhale deeply.

“Look, I really disliked your brother. I won’t badmouth him now that he is dead, but… he wasn’t the nicest person. But that still doesn’t mean he deserved to die. So I’m sorry for your loss. About your other brother too, but you need to know it’s not your fault, okay?! If I could, I would hug sense into you because you can’t blame yourself!”

Alex barks a laugh, his hand going to his sh, making his entire chest area bulge up. “Don’t tell me all this time you’ve wasted being quiet, you’ve actually hidden the fact you’re a nice person, Tarryn? You dislike me. Yet here you are, cheering me up… thanks…”

I have to look away not to be a creep. Those biceps… gah. Youngsters like him shouldn’t have them.

Bah, now I’m blushing too, and I avert my eyes. “I meant what I said about needing to escape from here,” I look around the basement. “There must be a way out of here.”

Despite the tears, Alex keeps his smile and chuckles. “It wouldn’t be much of a prison cell if the prisoners could escape…”

I laugh but fall silent once a door opens, and I hear someone walking down the stairs. It isn’t Marissa, but a woman who must be a servant. She is dressed like an old-school maid and is holding a keychain.

“Alright, time for the boy toy to make his debut,” the servant aims a smirk in Alex’s direction. “The Luna isn’t a demon like Alpha Tank, but… she has a few experiments lined up for you. You will be her living subject.”

“E-experiments?!” I shout. The woman is now opening up the door to Alex’s prison cell. He is chained to the wall and can’t do anything other than stare at the servant.

“E-experiments?!” I shout. The woman is now opening up the door to Alex’s prison cell. He is chained to the wall and can’t do anything other than stare at the servant.

“Yes, experiments,” the woman turns around, smiling at me. “Blaze could open portals. It was a handy power, and now that he is dead, the Luna wishes to see if we could open doorways into other dimensions by using his b***d. We wish to find allies,” her smile turns eviler. “But of course, we wouldn’t want to risk our own lives going into one of these portals, which is why this guy here comes in handy. We will be sending him.”

“What?!” I try to break free from the chains, but they are not budging. The woman is standing in front of Alex now. “You can’t take him! Take me instead! He is just a kid!”

The servant proceeds to ignore me. Her sole attention is put on the larger werewolf standing in front of her.

“It would be wise not to hurt me. We will send another werewolf to come and get you if you do that. So come with me willingly, and the next guy won’t have to fetch you. Believe me when I say he isn’t as kind.”

Alex’s gaze flickers to mine, and I freeze when he gives me a soft smile that makes him look more mature than eighteen. “I rather it is me than you, Tarryn. I got this.”

No! This can’t be happening! I barely know Alex, yet I already fear for him when the servant takes him away.

“You can’t take him! The kid isn’t even eighteen yet and can’t be sent to another dimension!”

The servant ignores me again, but Alex’s lips twitch when he passes my cell with his arms bound behind his back. His eyes are amused. “Kid, huh? Is that what I am to you?”

He shoots me a grin, but the servants push him forward, and the panic settles in when I can no longer see him. If this is anything like in the movies, then Alex is already dead—good people always die first.

“Alex…” I sob and fall to my knees on the dirty, cold floor. “What is going to happen to you?”
