My Mate Is An Omega
Chapter 27

Lancaster POV "Cait? Cait!"

The second I came down from my high, I was horrified to find my mate stiff underneath me. Her eyes were wide with fear, and her usually rosy skin was pale, as if she had just seen a ghost. She didn't respond when I called her name, nor did she move when I pulled out of her. My heart was racing as I carefully wrapped her in my arms. Had I done something wrong? Did I hurt her somehow? "Cait, talk to me, please!" I begged, shaking her in a desperate attempt to get her attention.

Thankfully it worked, but the words she spoke didn't calm me down any. "The pack... Dario... We're under attack!" she finally revealed, at the same time the loud sound alarm went off. "What?! Is it the werebears again?" I lifted out of bed, searching for my shorts in a rush.

"I don't know! He didn't tell me!" There was panic in her eyes as she too put on the first dress she could find. The lack of information scared me, but I needed to make her feel safe.

"It's okay, it's gonna be okay." I pulled her into my arms, kissing her forehead tenderly before looking into her eyes. It pained me to see them full of fear. "It's nothing we haven't dealt with before. I'll take you to the shelter, then I'll join the others and we'll fight off whoever dared come into our territory. Okay?"

She hesitated, but eventually nodded. "Okay."

As soon as we stepped outside of the house, hand in hand, it finally seemed to dawn on me. I could hear the sounds of the battle, the instinct to protect my pack calling me into the battlefield. A few months ago, I wouldn't have hesitated to join my brothers, but now I had other priorities. My frightened mate looked at me with hesitation; I knew I had to take her to safety before the enemies advanced, or else she could be in danger. And I would die before I let her get hurt.

Quickly assessing the situation, I unlaced our fingers as an idea crossed my mind. "It'll be faster if you ride on Atlas," I suggested.

Not wasting another second, she agreed and I gave my wolf control. As our bones cracked and elongated, our skin being torn open to allow thick fur to come to the surface, I felt the familiar pain from the transformation, but it didn't last long. Once my beast was out, he flashed a worried look at my mate before dropping to the floor, allowing our mate to climb on top of us. Her arms wrapped around our neck tightly; in any other situation, Atlas would have gone crazy due to her proximity. However, we could feel her fear and we wanted nothing more than to make her feel comfortable again.

"Hold on tight," I warned her before we took off.

My light brown wolf crossed the territory at an impressive speed, although still being careful to ensure Caitlyn wouldn't fall off. Aside from being an amazing, bulky warrior, my counterpart was incredibly fast as well. In under five minutes, we were able to run the distance from our house to the town square, where the safety bunker was located. It was usually the Delta who organized the pack members who couldn't fight during the event of an attack, but since we didn't have one, Sasha took the initiative to assist everyone. The moment she saw us, she helped my mate climb off of our back.

"You'll be safe here." The Gamma's daughter flashed a reassuring smile at our mate, who nodded in response. She turned to me soon after. "The others are already fighting off the intruders." "Bears?" I asked via the mindlink.

The black-haired woman nodded. "Now that everyone is safe, we should go." With that last warning, she started shifting.

to us.

At the same time, my sweet mate threw her arms around Atlas' neck, catching us off guard. She dove her face into our soft fur, and I could hear her heart beating louder. In an attempt to return her hug, Atlas rested his huge head on her shoulder, pulling her closer "Please be careful," she pleaded with watery eyes. It tore my heart to see her so scared. "Come back to me in one piece." "We will," my wolf and I replied in unison.

When she finally pulled away, Atlas licked her face, making her laugh. Her smile offered me the strength I needed to destroy those who dared threaten our home, and come back alive to make her happy until the end of our days. Pain struck my heart as I watched her walk inside of the bunker, waving us goodbye one last time as the thick metal door was shut. Topaz barked beside me, catching my attention - it was time to go.

The closer we got to the battlefield, the louder the sounds of the fight got. Growls and roars could be heard, as well as cracks and cries. When we finally reached the south border, Atlas' vivid green eyes widened in horror. Standing right in front of us was the biggest army of werebears I had ever seen; it wasn't anything like the previous attacks. Among the mess of blood and corpses, I realized we still outnumbered them, but it was hardly a sign of victory. Bears were much stronger than wolves, and it usually required two or three of us to take one of them down. I started to second guess the promise I had made to my mate. Could I really make it out of this?

"We can, and we will!" my wolf growled. "But only if we stop wasting time and help our brothers and sisters."

"You're right. The only way we can survive this is if we focus on the battle," I reckoned. I'm sorry, Cait, I thought to myself as I momentarily blocked our connection. Her worry was overwhelming me, and I couldn't afford to make her suffer anymore. This way, she wouldn't feel my pain if I got injured.

As soon as I was done, Topaz pushed me with her muzzle. Although it was her first time taking part in a real attack, there was determination in her clear blue eyes. Her legs were shaking, either out of fear or anger, but she still encouraged me to keep going. I took one last breath, allowing Atlas to fully take over so my thoughts and emotions wouldn't get in the way. Then, we marched towards the action in search of the Beta. We arrived just in time to watch Diesel rip a black bear's throat out with his sharp teeth, falling to the floor on top of the creature.

"Sasha, you go with Luke!" James' voice echoed inside my head as he spoke to both the Gamma's daughter and I. "Lance, join Jasper on the left side! I'll help the Alpha on the frontline. Whatever happens, don't fight the enemy on your own! If your partner is down, find another one immediately!" His coldness at the mention of the possibility of his own son's death was scary, but necessary. There was no room for feelings in the middle of a war.

Topaz and Atlas exchanged nods before they parted ways, heading in opposite directions. We ignored the cold bodies lying lifeless over the crimson grass as we made our way towards the other stray. It was easy to spot Phoenix among the rest of the warriors; his unique coat stood out among the shades of black and white. With the help of a gray wolf, he was trying to take an adversary down. Luckily, it wasn't a big one.

The two wolves sunk their teeth into each of the bear's legs, making it cry out in pain as he lifted one of his massive front paws into the air. Before it could strike, Atlas jumped at the creature's neck, biting down as hard as he could to try and pierce the rough hide. Its attention immediately turned to us, and it wasted no time to swat us. I felt a sharp pain on my ribs, but we didn't let go, still working on penetrating his skin. We closed our eyes when we noticed the enemy raise its paw once again, but the suffering never came. Just in time, Phoenix closed his jaw around its arm, preventing it from further hurting us.

At last, we were able to cut the bear's jugular, finally ending its life. Our light fur was now drenched in blood, but thankfully it wasn't our own. We were already panting when we exchanged looks with our partners, all of us taking a moment to catch our breaths. However, we were soon reminded that we had no time to rest when another enemy jumped in our direction, almost stomping on Phoenix. Once again, we were back in action.

The fight went on for another half hour. I had lost count of how many bears we had taken down, and how many warriors I watched fall to the ground in the meantime. My team and I were incredibly lucky to still be alive with only a few injuries. After taking a quick look around, I realized there were no more enemies in the backline. Since I was in a better condition, I decided to help the strongest warriors at the front. I informed Jasper about my plan before leaving him and his partner behind.

To my surprise, there weren't many bears left - but it was scary enough that there weren't a lot of wolves standing either. At my right, I noticed Luke and Sasha working to defeat one of the enemies; I was about to go help them when a loud whimper made Atlas' ears jolt up. When we turned in the direction of the sound, we found Diesel and Cyclone, the Beta's and the Alpha's wolves respectively, fighting against the biggest bear I had ever seen. It had pitch black fur, piercing red eyes, and a ferocious look on his face. With a single blow, it sent our strongest warrior flying, causing him to release an agonized cry. He landed just a few feet away from me; I wasted no time to get to him.

Diesel tried his best to get up, but his every attempt failed. I approached him carefully, quickly noticing a huge gash on his hind leg. The more he tried to move, the more blood oozed out of the cut. Judging by his situation, I figured he had more than a few broken bones. He huffed when he noticed us standing in front of him, and I could tell he was ashamed of his condition. To make sure we were out of danger, I took one final glance at the ongoing combat, realizing Dario seemed to be taking care of the beast just fine. "Get him to safety! I can deal with this myself." I heard the Alpha's voice inside my head, noticing he was looking at me from the corner of his eye. I bowed at him before obliging.

Atlas lowered his head, ignoring the Beta's every attempt to fight us off. He successfully grabbed the dark brown wolf by his collar and started dragging him away from the frontline. "What the f**k are you doing, stray?! Release us now!" James growled.

"Sorry, Beta. I can't. I'm following the Alpha's orders," I retorted, although it didn't keep him from further complaining.

We hid him near a rock - it was the best shelter we could find, so it would have to work. I was trying to think of what I should do next, when another painful howl cut through the early morning. This one I recognized far too well, and I immediately gasped in fear. With wide eyes, I turned my attention back to the site where Dario had been fighting the last bear. Frozen in my spot, I watched in disbelief as the enemy ripped a chunk of the light gray wolf's side with a single bite. When he hit the ground, his body went limp. "No!" I yelled in a panic, a battle howl escaping Atlas' throat. Out of instinct, we rushed to our fallen leader.
