I felt that my heart was about to explode with pain and anger when I saw Anne, and the thoughts of killing Josiah became more and more intense. Humans were not free of evil thoughts, it was just that these thoughts were usually suppressed.

Anne had been sent into the emergency room. Pedro brought the doctor along and urged him to do an examination on Abby. My emotions were in a mess while I held Abby in my arms. I looked at Pedro and said, "Dad, why not we wait for the attending doctor and get more details about Anne's condition first before we make a decision?"

He looked at me with a frown upon hearing that. Knowing that I was softhearted, he said, "Don't worry, we just want to do a full- body physical examination for this child now. We were only told that she and Anne were a match, but we didn't confirm that ourselves yet. After the doctor finishes the examination, we will then discuss what to do, okay?"

I couldn't refute his words, so I could only nod my head and agree with him.

Abby was being taken away, but she kept turning back to look at me. I knew that she was afraid. I tried to hide my angst and said with a smile, "Don't be afraid, Abby. This examination is just like getting an injection. It will be done soon."

She nodded and then left with the doctor obediently.

I was becoming more and more anxious while waiting outside. It was too agonizing to wait like this.

I became more distressed when they hadn't returned after an hour. I got up and wanted to go check on her, but I was stopped by Valerie, "Someone will look after that child. You stay here. Anne is still in the ward."

I nodded, but I couldn't let go of it. After pacing back and forth for a few rounds, the nurse downstairs came over and said, "The patient that you sent to the hospital just now has woken up. We are transferring her to the ward now. You can go and check on her."

I froze for a moment and told Valerie about the situation before heading off to check on Wendy.

I arrived at her ward and the doctor briefed me about her condition. They were the things that I had to take note of before and after the operation. I was still confused. I didn't really understand Wendy's condition, so I trailed along behind the doctor.

I asked, "Doctor, what's the problem with her?

What's going on?"

The doctor gave me a strange look and asked, "Aren't you the patient's family?"

I shook my head and replied, "I'm her friend. I only found out what happened to her today."

He nodded lightly and said, "The patient had a heart transplant a year ago, and she is currently still in the rejection phase. If she gets too agitated, her reaction will amplify. So, you have to pay close attention to the patient's mood."

I nodded after hearing that. Wendy had told me that she had a heart transplant before I sent her to the hospital. Normally, in this kind of situation, people would be glad that they were still alive, but why did she seem to hate this heart in her body so much?

I returned to the ward. Due to the anesthesia, Wendy could not move, but she was still conscious. She was wearing an oxygen mask, and looked at me as if she had something to say. Sitting down beside her, I said, "I know you have something to say to me. It's okay. You can tell me after you get a little better."

She shook her head slightly and said in a weak voice, "Don't exchange a life for a life. Someone innocent will wind up dead. Even if we manage to stay alive, we won't be happy either." I froze, looked at her and asked, "What do you mean?"
