After that, she fell into complete silence.

After we got into the car, Sheridan started driving us back and Abby no longer stuck her head out the window to enjoy the scenery. She just sat there motionlessly, without a single expression on her small face. I wanted to comfort her but when I opened my mouth, I didn't know what to say.

I had no other choice but to remain silent.

We had been driving for a while, but we had yet to reach the highway. I looked at Sheridan with some hesitation and said, "Mr. Lawson, are we heading the wrong way?"

He glanced at the rearview mirror and slightly pursed his lips. After a pause, he said, "Miss Reid, it seems that someone is following us."

I frowned and turned to look at the car behind me. I saw a gray van following closely behind. I was a little taken aback. I looked back at Sheridan and said, "Mr. Lawson, how long has this car been following us?"

"They have been following us since the moment we left the village. At first, I thought it was a coincidence. I took a detour, but they are still

behind us."

I pursed my lips, "Could it be someone from the Hathaway family?" But after a moment of thought, it did not seem like something Gail would do.

Sheridan shook his head and said, "It doesn't look like it."

After a pause, he asked, "Do you want them gone?"

I shook my head, "No need. We'll just head back like usual. I would like to see how long they intend to follow us."

Along the way, Abby had been silent. I sent messages to Valerie and asked her how Anne was doing. Valerie said that everything was going smoothly. She had just gone through another round of chemotherapy and was sent into a sterile room to rest.

Initially, I planned to give Hendrix a call but after a long drive, I was feeling dizzy and nauseous. Thus, I didn't call him for now.

It was already midnight when we finally arrived in Asherton. Sheridan tucked Abby in bed and left not long after.

When I went to see him off, he glanced at my surroundings and said, "If anything happens, call me right away."

I recalled the van that had been tailing us on our way home, so I nodded and agreed. After he left, I went into the house and locked the door. I went to check on Abby and found that she was still fast asleep. When I went back to my room, I planned to give Hendrix a call, but he was first to call instead. I picked up the phone and heard his deep voice ring out, "What is going on? Why couldn't I get through to you for the entire day?"

"Mr. Lawson and I went to Abby's hometown. The reception there is terrible. We have just returned home. How's it going on your side?" I said as I walked to the balcony and looked out the window. "Well, it's a little tricky, but it is not a big deal. Evan is already in Asherton. If you have any problems, you can contact him. I will come back as soon as I am done here."

I looked out the window and found nothing out of the ordinary. I closed the window and replied him, "I have officially adopted Abby. Hendrix, we can carry out Anne's surgery legally now."

He didn't reply for a very long time and I initially thought that he was upset. Finally, his deep voice rang out again, "Arianna, if you do this, do you think you're any different from the child's parents and Sebastian?"
