My Pretty Sweetheart (Arianna) -
Chapter 846
For centuries, whether it was the law or the teachers in school, they told us that we should be fair in doing things. The country should treat everyone fair and just, and between people, we must maintain an equal way of getting along with each other.
However, thinking about it carefully, we were never treated fairly right the moment we were born. When we were students, the teachers would tend to favor the ones who had good grades. After we stepped into society, the different treatments toward people of different ranks became more apparent.
For example, we were all looking at the same things at the auction but the front row seats were much more comfortable and relaxing. There were fruits and drinks provided to the front row seaters, whereas the rear rows did not get to enjoy such a treatment.
People were divided into ranks and were treated differently.
Sitting in the front row, Evan changed the number cards for Kelsey and I, and after that, he stuffed a black card into my hand.
I was a little confused. Looking at him, I asked in bewilderment, "Why did you give me this?"
He replied, "Mr. Roberts said that you can bid for whatever you like later. You can pay with this card."
"F*ck!" Kelsey, who was sitting next to me, couldn't help cursing. "Mr. Roberts is being so blatant with his public display of affection."
She looked at Evan and asked, "Can you stand this?"
Evan lifted his hand and touched his nose. Then, he coughed lightly and said, "I'm used to it already!"
Kelsey gave him a thumbs up and praised him, "You're impressive!"
Looking at the two, I said, "Stop making a fuss. I don't need this card. I just came here to have a look. I don't intend to buy anything."
Aside from the fact that all the auction items had a starting bid of one million dollars, I was not interested in antiques. Even if I liked the items, I wouldn't spend so much money to buy a pile of antiques that I didn't know how to appreciate.
I couldn't help the fact that I was not interested in the auctioned items at all. I gave the black card back to Evan, but he did not take it. Instead, he said, "Keep it. Mr. Roberts asked me to give it to you. You can use it anytime even if you're not going to use it today."
Knowing that he would not take the card back, I did not insist anymore. Almost all of the people had arrived.
A host walked up onto the stage. After speaking a bunch of reserved and genteel words, the auction began.
The first auction item was a tiara, which was said to be the favorite item of a princess from the 1500s.
Kelsey pursed her lips and clicked her tongue, "Only the Milton family would dare auction historical relics so blatantly."
I didn't possess much knowledge in that field. Perplexed, I cast a sideways glance at her and asked, "What's wrong with it?"
Pointing at the Tiara, she said, "Most of the artifacts from the 1500s had been taken away by the museum, but such a beautiful tiara is still in the hands of the Milton family. They even took it out for auction at a museum. Isn't this ironic? If the Milton family was just an insignificant family, the relevant department would have approached them and openly confiscated the item after giving them an honorary certificate and five hundred dollars as a reward. Look at how arrogant the Milton family is now. They have kept this relic in their house for so many years, and they are blatantly taking it out for auction now."
Listening to the continuous bids being made, she whispered, "Listen carefully. The price has already reached tens of millions of dollars. If you put it in the hands of ordinary people, the most you will get is five hundred dollars."
I pursed my lips and couldn't help but sigh. There were some rules that we couldn't change.
The higher one climbed, the higher one stood. The more one saw things that one had never seen, the easier it would be for one to associate with others and help evildoers commit crimes.
In the end, an elderly man won the auction with a bid often million dollars.
Such a thing had already become common.
It was not surprising at all.
