My Pretty Sweetheart (Arianna) -
Chapter 979
"Arianna, do you think that other people don't feel anything? Do you think that you are the only one who was suffering?"
I stood rooted to the ground and stared at her, bemused. This was the first time someone had said something like that to me.
"I..." I wanted to argue, but I couldn't help but laugh self-deprecatingly. "You are right. I'm sorry. I'm sorry if my actions hurt you and others." Unable to continue the conversation, I left. I hailed a taxi and went straight to Milton Group.
To be honest, I was a little annoyed. People who were naturally standoffish were always like this. I didn't know what to do about it at all!
When I arrived at the company, I was still annoyed. After reading through the documents that Sebastian wanted me to sign, I became even more irritated.
When it was time to get off work, Linda saw that I was still there. She knocked on the door and came in, frowning. "What's wrong?"
I noticed that everyone had left the office, I brushed it off her concern, "Nothing, maybe just a pre menstrual thing. I'm feeling a little annoyed." She seemed to pity me. "Having your period within the next two days would be pretty sad. It's going to be Valentine's soon! What a bummer." "Valentine's Day?"
Time passed so quickly that I nearly forgot about it. I sighed and said, "I am not young anymore. It's pointless to celebrate Valentine's Day."
She rolled her eyes at me. "What do you mean by old? Based on what you've just said, do you mean that once a person reaches a certain age, he or she will have to live a boring and bland life? That's too bad!"
I started to smile then suddenly remembered Naomi's words at noon. I was supposed to ask Linda to have dinner together in the evening.
I was about to ask her but then I remembered. I didn't even know if Naomi would want to, after what had happened that afternoon.
"Linda, do you have a best friend? Or someone you love very much?" I asked instead.
She nodded. Her high heels must have been cumbersome, as she found a chair and sat next to me. "Of course I do. I have a bestie whom I have known for almost 15 years. As for the people I love very much, my children, my parents, they are all close to my heart."
I hesitated for a moment before asking, "What about your husband?"
She didn't expect my question, and after a pause, she said, "I am divorced."
I was stunned too. "I'm sorry, I..."
"It's normal. When a person lives long enough, they encounter change. Arianna, life isn't something that's fixed. It's fine if you just choose to live the life you want." Her expression was calm, and everything she said was simple enough. I nodded and smiled.
She grinned. "What's wrong? What happened, that you are asking me all this?"
At that point, there was no need to hide it. I admitted, "I don't seem to know how to treat the people around me, or how to act with those who care about me. It seems that I always push them away by accident." She propped up her chin in her hand and gave me a frank stare. "Friends and lovers?"
I nodded, "Well, apparently that I haven't learned how to love. Ever since I was young, it seems that I haven't learned how to love others."
She was slightly surprised and said, "Don't you have a child? How do you love her? I don't know how others would put it but I think love is from the heart. Love moves you to hope that the other person will lead a good life. Just like how you'd treat your child. If you know how to treat her well, you will try your best to give her the best things."
