16.Attack

~Narrator

Elvira's dreams were a deep crimson and shadowy black, the colours of blood and darkness and death. The vague, blurry nightmares swirled into the tortured, twisted forms of dead bodies. Red, sticky rivers of blood bubbled up from the dry, cracked earth, filling the edges of Elvira's vision and crashing down on the bodies in the form of giant red waterfalls. And in the middle of the chaos was the most evil, terrible creature of all: the Ragnarok. It's bony spine stuck out prominently from it's white, mottled skin as it crunched on a mouthful of bones. More blood dripped from it's ugly jaws as it dug it's sharp claws into the ground. When Elvira looked into it's eyes, it was like gazing into the pits of hell; they were like the very essence of death, or the ground death was buried in. Elvira seemingly did not feel scared, although her body felt as if it were weighted down in fear; petrified and rooted to the ground. No matter how hard Elvira tried, her body stayed still, even as a leering crowd of Ragnarok mages descended upon her in a screeching flurry of swords and magic.

The screeching filled her ears as the darkness consumed her.

Elvira woke with a start, a sheen of sweat appearing in her forehead. A few of her roommates snored lightly as a thin sheet of rain pattered on the rooftops. Elvira looked around frantically at her sleeping roommates. What in the world was that dream?! She thought incredulously, shaking her head to clear the memory. A strange sensation creeped up her spine. I...I can sense fear magic! Wait...does this mean...

Heart beating rapidly, Elvira scrambled out of bed to warn the others.

I woke to Carissa falling out of bed with a thump. Loud screams and shouts arose from the hallway outside the dorms. The other recruits and I had stayed over in the mage realm, because the next day there would be more training. What's happening? I though wearily. All I wanted was to do was sleep. My limbs ached from all the fighting they did during that training session. I shoved Emma's hand out the way. Why was she shaking me? "Mwuf!" I huffed angrily into my pillow.

"Rilla! We have to go!" Emma's voice was laced with worry. "Th-the Ragnarok Mages! They're attacking!" Suddenly my eyes were wide open. Even though my body was wracked with fear, I hopped out of bed and pulled my friends along with

me.

"Let's go!" I shouted as I kicked open the door. I surveyed the hallway. It was in total chaos; I wondered how just a few mages could make so much noise. A stream of mages rushed down the stairs, blending into one another as my friends and I joined the fray.

When we arrived down at the academy gardens, about twenty Ragnarok Mages stood waiting for us. Twenty to twenty seven, I sighed inwardly. Don't make eye contact, Marilla. The Ragnarok mages advanced on us steadily, their gait slow and staggering. I watched as Elvira stepped out from the crowd, eyes closed. No, stupid! Don't do that! The Ragnarok mages paused, as if to observe Elvira in bewilderment. Then they leaped.

Golden light erupted from Elvira's body, and I covered my face as the blinding flash stung my eyes. Sparks swam across my vision. When I finally regained my eyesight, I stared, baffled, at the Ragnarok mages. They seemed to be encased in golden sparkles, and were frozen with their limbs twisted at odd angles.

"What're you waiting for, you flies? Get 'em!" Elvira pointed towards the enemy as she rolled her eyes in disgust. We closed our gaping mouths and ran towards the frozen mages. there are too many dashy line thingos

The Ragnarok mages weren't frozen for long. A few minutes later, the golden mist dissipated into the air and the mages began to attack us. I kicked a Ragnarok mage in the stomach, sending it flying across the grass and causing it to land in a patch of papery flowers. The moonlight shone overhead as I gathered up a large ball of water. How many Ragnarok mages turned back then? I thought angrily. I found Oliver struggling against three Ragnarok mages. I rushed over and dunked the ball of water on one of the mage's heads.

"Need a little help?" I grinned mischievously as Oliver blushed.

"I was doing just fine," he mumbled. I held back a laugh. I could see his blush even in the dim light of the moon. A few more Ragnarok mages started to overwhelm us. There was a flash of light as Elvira teleported to our location. "I'm here to help, daaaarling!" She drooled, and Oliver and I rolled our eyes simultaneously. We continued fighting as a steam of ally mages came to our aid.

"Thanks guys- OH NO!" I screeched as a Ragnarok mage climbed onto Elvira, who had fallen onto the ground mid-fight. TheRagnarok mage was staring her right in in he eyes.

"Elvira made eye contact!" Emma squeaked. I glanced over at Oliver. He seemed completely relaxed as Elvira pushed the Ragnarok mage off her with a flourish.

"What?! Why isn't she crazy?" I asked, flabbergasted. Elvira grinned smugly.

"Oh, didn't you know?" Oliver said calmly, smirking a little. "She's immune to their eye powers."
