Then, Peter hesitated before asking, "Then do you both have time today? I want to invite you to a meal as a send-off."

Cindy didn't know if Peter was just asking out of politeness, but she still replied very seriously, "We already have an appointment today because we're leaving tomorrow. Many people invited us out for dinner tonight. It's not that I don't want to join you, but it's that we really don't have time. I hope you can understand."
