"Come on now, Mr. Wagner, can't you see it?" Allen teased, gesturing for Phipps to come closer. Phipps obediently stepped forward, standing almost in the faces of Dustin and Conrad. This time, they had a clear view, close enough to see the fine details of his skin. I could see it too, crystal clear. A voice inside me whispered: he's Ernest.

"Allen, you've really outdone yourself. Where did you find this guy?" Conrad sneered.

Allen replied with a light smile, "Fate."

Then, turning to me, he asked, "Isn't that right, Ms. Hudson?"

My eyes remained locked on Phipps, trying to see through his exterior to confirm he was my Ernest.

"Phipps, Ms. Hudson here seems quite taken with you. Would you consider staying?" Allen finally got to the point.

"Mr. Clark, you know my stance. I'm not for sale," Phipps responded, making his position clear. His firm 'not for sale' stance darkened Dustin and Conrad's moods further.

Allen shrugged helplessly at me, "See, Ms. Hudson? I told you he wouldn't agree."

"If there's nothing else, Mr. Clark, I'll be on my way," Phipps said, nodding before turning to leave.

That's when I felt a nudge on my shoulder from Fanny, reminding me of something.

"Wait," I called out to Phipps, standing up from my wheelchair. Before anyone could react, I took a couple of swift steps towards Phipps, wrapped my arm around his neck, and whispered into his ear. "Felicia, what are you doing?" Conrad's angry voice boomed.

And Fanny chimed in, "Mr. Wagner, she's making a move."

While they spoke, my hand slid over the back of Phipps's neck, feeling for something that wasn't there. I didn't give up, ignoring his attempts to pull away tchecked again, even

examining his neck closely, but there was nothing.

Ernest's mole, something you could both feel and see, was missing. This man wasn't my Ernest.

I slowly let go of him, standing there numbed and disheartened. Fanny came over, understanding everything without needing me to speak.

"Mr. Clark, I want to press charges for harassment," Phipps suddenly declared.

His words only made me more certain he wasn't Ernest. If he were hiding his true identity, he wouldn't dare involve the police, fearing exposure. But his boldness showed he had nothing to hide.

Seeing my hope and anticipation turn into profound disappointment made me feel like a fool. Especially facing Phipps's cold, disdainful look, I realized I had been wrong. I shouldn't have assumed he

Ernest based solely on his

appearance.

"Press charges? Do you even know who Ms. Hudson is? Getting a hug from her is a blessing you haven't earned in three lifetimes. These two Mr. Wagners here would kill for a chance to be hugged by Ms. Hudson, and they don't even have that luck," Allen, ever the provocateur, chimed in.

"Shut it!" Conrad lashed out again, visibly annoyed.

"Little Mr. Wagner, am I not speaking the truth?" Allen continued to prod at Conrad's patience.
