No More Waiting, She Chooses Love -
Chapter 735
Felicia, you know you can't afford to lose Ernest again. Keeping things under wraps like this, if you don't come clean, you're also putting yourself in danger," Dustin tried to scare me.
"What have I actually taken? Besides, you know as well as I do that he's been playing dumb, refusing to admit he's Ernest," I countered.
Seeing I wasn't cooperating, Dustin's expression darkened, "Felicia, I don't want anything bad to happen to you. And if something does, I won't be able to protect you."
"When have you ever protected me?" I shot back.
His so-called love for me was nothing more than a means to satisfy his own desires for control and conquest.
Realizing he couldn't sway me, Dustin nodded slightly, "Then you're on your own."
He stormed off, seething with anger. Before, he always presented himself as this gentle and courteous knight in shining armor. Now, his true colors were showing. He was done pretending. It looked like he was ready to burn his bridges.
I wasn't scared of him, but I knew I needed to tread carefully. Lost in thought, I ended up pressing the wrong floor on the elevator and found myself at Fanny's maternity clinic.
Since I was here, I might as well check on Fanny. It had been days since we last spoke.
But as soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I heard someone screaming. The cries were not normal; I had a feeling something bad had happened and hurried over.
I saw a middle-aged woman sitting on the ground, wailing, "You've killed my daughter-in-law and my grandson. You will pay for this."
People were gathered all around, and the woman's family members were demanding to see the head of the hospital.
My heart sank, fearing this had something to do with Fanny. I turned to go to her office, but she appeared before I could reach it.
"Fanny, this has nothing to do with you, right?" I asked, concerned.
Her face was grave, "It does."
My heart tightened at her words, but before I could ask anything, she had already approached the aggrieved family, "I'm the head of this department. The hospital has already initiated a medical investigation into your case. Please, go home and wait for the results."
"What results can we possibly wait
for? Can your results bring back my daughter-in-law and my grandson? We brought our loved ones to you an good health, and you took them away. How can we just go home and wait? Are you even human? Do you have any conscience at all?" The woman moved towards Panny as she screamed.
I instinctively moved to protect Fanny, which probably provoked the woman's family member, who came at me with a raised fist, "Oh, you've brought backup now?"
I wasn't anyone's backup.
Before I could explain, the man swung at me. Fanny pushed me aside, taking the punch on her shoulder instead, and stumbled backward.
"Stop!" With that command, Fanny was caught in a secure embrace.
I saw Sinclair, his timely arrival a relief.
His tall frame and dignified aura
mean
momentarily stunned the assailant, but fueled by rage, the man attempted to strike again. Sinclair shielded Fanny, blocking the man's fist, and firmly stated, "Call the police."
A nurse quickly dialed for help.
The threat of police involvement effectively halted the attack. The middle-aged woman resumed her wailing.
Sinclair, unfazed, escorted Fanny back to her office, with me trailing behind.
Once in her office, Fanny managed to say, "Thanks, Uncle."
"Why did you intervene? This has nothing to do with you," he asked coldly.
But Fanny had said it did involve her.
Confused, I heard Fanny explain, "If I hadn't swapped shifts with Dr. Alfven, she wouldn't have been in this situation." So that was it.
"Move your shoulder," Sinclair instructed.
Fanny didn't respond, so Sinclair gently grasped her arm, and at the slightest movement, Fanny winced in pain.
