Not His Type Of Mate -
Chapter 126
Lord Maddison's POV
I saw her face fall the moment she entered my study and saw the broken plates on the floor, and I knew she was sad. She looked disappointed and heartbroken, which made my heart ache. Nora stood there, staring at the food she painstakingly cooked for me scattered around the floor, and the pain in her eyes was indescribable. I was sad too. I wanted to stand up, walk up to her, and apologize because I had only done it to see if she would be angry or not.
After she left the room, the sweet aroma of the food entered my nose, and I was surprised at how much her cooking hypnotized me. I took a bite, and I felt my whole body rejuvenated, but I couldn't express my excitement as much as I wanted to because I was conscious... conscious of getting caught like that. I stood up from my seat and paced around the room, thinking about what to do. Only God knew how happy I was when I saw her enter my study, how much I wanted to run to her and give her a tight hug because I missed her so much. But I had to hold myself back because my heart was beating so fast. I had expected her to ask for the divorce papers she forgot to sign yesterday, but she kept on talking to me instead, and it only made me more anxious, which prompted me to ask her. But I regretted it immediately and wanted to take my words back... Well... It was too late as she already felt unhappy with me.
My heart melted, and I felt joyous when she said she would win me back. One part of me wanted to laugh and tell her she already had my heart, but I stopped myself and watched her leave the room. She brought my food later, and it was another moment of unexpected joy for me, but I was also scared. I feared showing her my feelings and stopping her from leaving because I was sure her heart belonged to another man. No matter how lovingly she looked at me, I was always afraid that her heart was with someone else, and it hurt me to admit it.
Still pacing around the room, I walked back to the food and pushed it away from my table. The food was confusing me, making me reconsider my decision to let her go, and I knew that shouldn't happen. But then again, seeing how sad and heartbroken she looked broke my heart and made me regret my actions.
Without saying a word, she bent down and started picking up the broken pieces of the plate with her bare hand. She wasn't using anything, and her tender hand kept grazing the ground as she picked up the pieces, which triggered different thoughts in my head. What if she injured herself with the plates?
I thought about it for a while and shrugged it off. She wasn't a child, so there was no way she wouldn't be careful. I wanted to look away and continue with what I was doing, but my mind was unsettled. I looked at her again and instinctively stood up. I walked over to her and was about to ask her to stand up when I stopped myself and turned my back on her. I groaned silently before returning to my seat. I shouldn't be so swayed by her. She is strong... I kept comforting myself as I watched her arrange the broken plates into a tray, and then she stood up.
She looked at me and smiled. "What do you want to eat? I will cook whatever you want for you." She said softly, and I was shocked. I never expected her to say such a thing when she was supposed to be very angry. I expected her to scold me and walk away, but she acted unpredictably, and it only saddened me. "You can tell me whatever you want to eat," she said, and I frowned before returning my attention to the files on my table. I started working on them, ignoring her.
She stood there, staring at me for a few more seconds before she walked out of the study, leaving me alone. I raised my head the moment I heard the door lock, and I sighed. Phew! That was so exhausting! "What are you doing, Maddison? Don't you think you're being too harsh on her?" Darin asked me, but I shut him off and continued with what I was doing to clear my mind.
A few minutes later, the door opened, and a maid came in. She bowed. "My Lord," she greeted before she bent down and started cleaning the room. I watched the maid clean the room, with many thoughts running through my mind, which only made me feel more guilty than before. I shouldn't have done that. "Where is Your lady?" I asked the maid, who was about to leave the study after cleaning the room, and she was startled. She looked back at me and bowed her head. "Madam is in the kitchen, preparing a meal for you, my Lord," she explained, and my heart sank. She was stressing herself again. Who knows the last time she entered the kitchen to cook? I even had to pour away the food she cooked. "Okay. You can leave," I said to the maid, who nodded and left the room. I was left alone with my thoughts, and sadness washed over my soul. I sighed and rested my head on my table as I remembered her sad face when she saw her food on the ground, and I felt like tearing my skin with my fingers... I was guilty. "Maddison!" Darin yelled, and I raised my head. Hearing his voice at times like this was already becoming annoying to me, but I could only groan as I replied to him. "What's the matter?" I asked, hiding my annoyance, even though I knew there was no way to hide my feelings from him. "You are being too harsh on her, Maddison. She cooked for you, and you threw it away. Now she's preparing another meal for you. Have you forgotten that she apologized to you already and even said she was going to win your heart?" Darin asked me, and I sighed. That was what I felt most guilty about. She wanted to win me over, but I was playing too hard to get... This is bad. "I know. But there is nothing I can do. I want to take her back and make her mine again, but there is nothing I can do. I can't make her stay with me when her heart already belongs to another man. She loves Leo, not me. She's doing all this because of the pregnancy," I replied painfully, and my heart ached again. Darin growled. "What are you saying, Maddison? You've been saying this same line since the beginning of this fight, but I see no sense in it anymore. Why would she continue staying with you when she could have gone to meet Leo if she still loves him? Can't you see that she loves you?!" Darin yelled at me, but I wasn't convinced. I knew what I was saying, and I had experienced firsthand how much Nora loved Leo, and I knew it would be hard for her to change her mind so soon.
I ran my fingers through my hair and took a deep breath. "You can't understand," I said to Darin before ending the conversation, as I could feel Nora's presence by the door.
She opened it and entered the room. "I'm back with your favorite," she said, but I only glanced at her once before returning my gaze to the files.
She walked over to my desk and placed the food there. "This is your favorite, and I know you miss eating it. But if you don't want to eat it, you can tell me, and I will cook something else for you," she said with a big smile on her face, as if nothing had happened at all. I stared at her face for a few minutes before shaking my head. "Take your food away. I'm not eating," I said to her, and she widened her eyes. "If you're not eating, what do you want to eat then?" she questioned, and I frowned. "I'm not eating anything. Just take your food away and leave," I said to her before looking away.
"What are you doing again, Maddison? Have you forgotten that she is pregnant and needs rest?" Darin reminded me, and my eyes twitched. She indeed shouldn't be stressing herself this way when she was two months pregnant, but what could I do? I had made a decision I couldn't go back on, and it was to let her go to the man she loved and wanted to be with. "No, Darin. This is for the best," I said to Darin and looked back at Nora, who was still staring at me. "I said I'm not eating. Take your food away from here," I warned her again, but she only shook her head. "I won't. I won't take this food away, and you have to eat it. You can't stay angry with me and my food!" she replied to me, and I frowned.
To provoke her, I pushed the food away from my desk, and it fell on the ground. She stared at the food on the ground for a while, and without saying a word, she left my office. Staring at her back, I felt overwhelmed with guilt again, but I was confused about what to do. Seconds later, I decided to go after her and see what she was going to do, but I was surprised and heartbroken when the maids told me she had already left.
