One More Chance -
Chapter 82: Her promise
~~~You broke my heart, ripped my world apart. One day, justice will come and find you and I'll be right there in your memory to remind you... didn't you know how much I loved you? I gave you everything, every part of me. Didn't you feel it when I touched you? Didn't I rock you when I loved you, Baby? Tell me, didn't you know how much I loved you?~~~
-Kellie Pickler-
"Well, I just wanted to know what happened because all of a sudden you felt comfortable talking to him. As I remembered, you were so annoyed with him in these past few days and you can't even stand a few minutes talking to him. So, what happened?" She let out a deep sigh. We have already reached the door to her room when she stopped and started explaining what happened.
"Mom told me that I shouldn't show my anger every time he's around if I don't want to give him a false conclusion and that he'll think I haven't moved on from the past yet." "So does this mean, you still haven't moved on from him?"
"No! Of course, not! I told you, I've already moved on, but the best way to show it is by acting normally in front of him as if I'm not affected by the anger I still have for him."
"I don't get it," I said honestly, shaking my head. "If you've already moved on from the past, then why are you still mad at him? If you have already moved on, you shouldn't be affected by his presence anymore, because you've already moved on, right?" I've lost count on how many times I've mentioned the words 'moved on'.
"Yes, you're right, but the thing is that it's not easy to forget what happened. I can talk to him all day or maybe I can forgive him, but I can't easily forget what he did. Do you now get my point?"
"Uhm... explain it further. My mind is still loading and it can't get over from the avocado toast we had for breakfast." I pretended to smile and touched my belly.
Her face turned into sour for a few seconds before she burst into laughter.
"Son of a biscuit eater! You eat a lot, but you don't gain weight. I really don't know where you put the food in your stomach."
"Well, thank God I have a fast metabolism." I shrugged and then walked past her to her room.
A few minutes later when we were already sitting on the balcony of her room, she finally opened up with me and told me what happened the last time she spoke to Luke.
I watched her the whole time she was speaking. Every movement of her hands, every expression on her face and every word that came out of her mouth. I wanted to know if what she was talking about was true. Because sometimes, I don't know if it's just me and my naughty thoughts or she was just pretending and hiding her real feelings.
"So you mean to say after fixing the faucet, you asked him to have breakfast with you?"
"Yes, because he didn't want to accept the payment I offered him. That's the least I can do for his efforts. Imagine what the kitchen would look like if he hadn't fixed the faucet."
"Uhm... okay," I said, nodding. She has a point on that matter.
"And then while we were eating, he started talking about the past. He apologized for what he did and for all the mistakes he made."
"He apologized for what he did and you accepted it easily?" I asked with my eyebrows forming a straight line.
"Of course not! It's not something I can give him that easily after of all the things he's done."
"Well, I agree."
"But on the other hand, I should be grateful for him, so I thanked him for doing those things. For breaking my heart and letting me go because if he hadn't done such things, I wouldn't be able to realize and appreciate what I have right now."
I smiled as a response. She's right, if Luke hadn't cheated on her when they were still married, she would never have experienced the freedom she has at the moment, but the thing is that... I don't know if I can really trust her words. Her mouth expresses the exact opposite of the feelings I can see in her eyes.
"And you know what's the funny part? He appreciated my cooking skills for the first time!" That statement was followed by a laugh.
"What do you mean he appreciated your cooking skills?"
"Well, it happened to be that his girlfriend didn't know how to cook, so they mostly ordered and take out food from restaurants."
"Poor him! That's what he deserves! He has had you for so many years but was blinded by his stupidity over his ex-girlfriend. He didn't appreciate your worth as his maid---I mean his wife."
"Jackeline!"
"Just kidding!" I laughed at her when she narrowed her eyes at me upon hearing the word 'maid'. But honestly, she seemed like Luke's maid before as she just followed through with everything he wanted her to do. "Now he knows how foolish he was for letting go of someone like you. But I just hope you don't forget the promise you told me when we were in New York, girl."
"Promise? What promise?"
I stared at her in disbelief.
"Gosh! Don't tell me you've forgotten your promise already? Hello---the Samantha Soriano version 2.0!"
"Ohh..." she chuckled and I rolled my eyes. "Don't worry, I haven't forgotten that promise and I've already learned my lesson. Luke is one of the things or the right word is that, he is someone I should I let go and forget from the past.
"You can't do that." She frowned at me. "You can't let him go and forget him because he is your daughter's father and somehow in the future you will interact with each other because of her. Maybe what you mean is that your old feelings for him are one of the things you should let go and forget, am I right?" "Well, yeah, you're right, that's what I meant to say." She agreed, nodding.
It took a few seconds before we found our words again. Actually, I chose not to open my mouth as I was waiting for her next words, but she also kept it shut.
"Anyway, how's your boyfriend? I thought you said he'd come to visit you here?"
It was then that's when she smiled at me... a smile confused me as it didn't reach her eyes.
"Yeah, but he told me he couldn't make it this week due to the surgery schedules."
-'Ohh... I got it! Maybe that's the reason why she's kinda sad.'-
"Oh, that's sad. Do you miss him?"
Her head instantly snapped at me.
"What kind of question is that? Of course, I miss him. He's just busy these past few days, but I understand him. Hopefully, before this month ends he could come and visit us here."
-'In fairness, her eyes light up when she talks about him.'-
"Hey, let's talk about your date---I mean, recent dates with Paul. You haven't told me anything about it!" I bit my lip when she suddenly changed the subject. "What's going on between you and Paul, huh?"
A light chuckle escaped my lips as I answered her question.
"Nothing is going on between us. I told you it was just friendly dates and nothing more."
"Haha... tell that to my ass, because I don't believe you!" She said, her lips curled into a smirk.
"We're friends! We're just friends, that's just it!"
And that's when the atmosphere in her room changed from heavy to light and our mornings were filled with teasing and laughter.
