At the

mention of the quartz pendant, Stella felt a bit frustrated. Frowning, she said, “I’ve already given it away. It feels awkward to ask for it back.“–

“I don’t care. You have to,” Brian said firmly, leaving no room for discussion. He couldn’t stand seeing it around Yoel’s neck.

Stella cuddled up to him and slowly drifted off. Just before dawn, Brian received a phone call. His expression turned serious after a few words, and he quickly got out of bed.

Sensing something was wrong, Stella quickly sat up. “What’s wrong, Brian?”

“My mom’s report is out. There’s a problem. I need to go to the hospital, Brian said as he headed to the bathroom to wash up.

Stella’s heart sank. There really was a problem. She hurried out of bed, ran to the closet, and picked out some clothes for Brian. She grabbed a black suit and walked back to the bedroom just as Brian emerged

from the bathroom.

Their eyes met. When he saw the clothes in her hands, he felt an unspoken understanding between them. A peculiar warmth filled his heart

“Let me help you get dressed.” Stella hurried over, clumsily trying to help him put on his clothes.

Brian held her hands to calm her down. “Take it easy. No rush.”

“Okay.” She nodded and helped him put on the shirt.

In less than five minutes, he was dressed. Stella handed him his watch and placed it in his palm. “Brian,

no matter how busy you are, don’t skip your meals.”

“Alright.” Brian hugged her tightly. “Stay home and wait for me,”

“Okay.” She nodded again.

Standing on the balcony, she watched his car drive away. Suddenly, she felt empty.

She was concerned about Sharon. At the same time, she was worried that Brian would be upset. In her heart, she already considered them family.

Feeling restless at home, Stella decided to go out. She bought a new opal pendant at a crystal store and

then went to see Yoel.

She needed to get that quartz pendant back. Brian wouldn’t let her off the hook otherwise. She arranged

to meet Yoel at an Esnean restaurant, offering to treat him to lunch.

Yoel arrived on time. He was dressed in a casual suit, and his features were sharp and cool.

Stella felt a bit embarrassed to bring it up, so she let him order first. “Mr. Perkins, I promised to treat you

to a meal. Let’s order first.”

Yoel smiled and ordered two dishes. Stella added two more.

They ate mostly in silence. When they were almost done, Stella glanced at Yoel’s neck. He was still wearing the quartz pendant.

Feeling awkward, she scratched her head. “Yoel, I got you this.”

She pushed the new opal pendant toward him. It cost 350 dollars, ten times more valuable than the quartz pendant he was wearing.

When Yoel opened the box, he was surprised. “Why the gift?”

“Um, about that quartz pendant that I gave you before, it’s not worth much. It’s just a casual good–luck charm. I’d like to have it back,” Stella said, bracing herself.

Yoel touched the green quartz pendant around his neck. “This one?”

“Yes.” She nodded and quickly made up a story. “I’ve prayed with this quartz pendant, so it’s tied to my thoughts and wishes.

“The elders in my family say I shouldn’t give it away. It needs to stay with me. I’m really sorry,” She apologized repeatedly.
