Promised To The Alpha Twins -
Chapter 93
The room fell silent for a few long seconds before erupting into chaos.
Witnesses were shouting from all sides, emotions thrown at me like daggers to my neck and chest. Many were outraged that I dared to disrespect the High Table. Insults were hurled in my direction, blaming my upbringing.
To my surprise, some came to my defense. Though their voices weren’t as loud, they shouted that I had the right to claim my life and my abilities. They accused the High Table of becoming too powerful, a thought that made me tremble.
I couldn’t help but notice that the Alpha and the golden-haired Luna remained silent, their emotions not showing animosity toward me.
The chaos lasted a total of five seconds before David Zoe silenced the room with a movement of his hand.
“Enough, we cannot blame the girl for her outbursts. She wasn’t raised in our values and customs, so she can and will be excused,” David announced to the room. The feeble compliment made me narrow my eyes. “It’s understandable that we’re eager to explore your abilities, Sussan. You’re unique. Abilities like these are gifted to the world for a reason. Think of this as an opportunity to discover them. I firmly believe that working with the High Table could provide you with the answers you’ve been seeking, while helping us in our effort to improve our species.”
David Zoe was skilled with his words, infecting the crowd with his subtle poison. There were murmurs of agreement, and they even insisted I offer assistance to smaller packs. I could feel my walls closing in on me, a million greedy hands tearing at my clothes, my hair, and my limbs. Everyone wanted something from me, each and every one of them. It took a moment for me to realize that David Zoe wasn’t asking, he was insisting.
“I see the concern on your face, Mrs. Sussan. I can only imagine what you must be feeling in this room, from each and every one of us,” David smiled softly, his perfect mask in place. “I have no intention of forcing you, though it has long been customary among the packs of the country to exchange deals and create them. While I can’t speak for my fellow Alphas, I am very interested in working with you. If any of my fellow university colleagues wish to work with you, they will provide you with their terms. Now, if you wish to decline us, we could discuss again what your future will look like and any other concerns we might have.”
It was in that moment that I realized how dangerous David Zoe was. To the public, he was this incredible figure of honor and prosperity, vociferating his dreams about preserving our species. In reality, he was a power-hungry sociopath with a gift for manipulation and good looks. For many in the room, what David said was generous. I should be ecstatic that the High Table wanted my services, that they wanted to work with me. But it was an incredible honor I didn’t want. Yet for them, it was a crime simply to want to live my life.
The room fell silent for a few long seconds before erupting into chaos.
As David offered me this incredible opportunity, my other companion was sitting in a cell. I wanted to scream, to throw everything I had at the five of them.
I could feel my power surging through my body, and I clenched my fingers into the wooden podium in front of me. Sven Ross twisted his head, causing his disheveled hair to move. He leaned forward in his seat and squinted. It was the first sign of interest I’d seen from him. Even his emotions were detached and somewhat bored. Now he was curious. The power bubbling within me faded with surprise, and Thomas’s disinterest returned quickly.
“Let’s take a break for the moment, to think about these negotiations that will be the beginning of the story for our species,” David Zoe smiled at the room, “We will resume tomorrow. For those of you who wish to remain at our stands, await further instructions.”
And so, my first meeting with the High Table had come to an end. I desperately wished it would be the last. This hotel was reserved solely for the High Table and its meetings, which meant we could stay there until a decision was made.
It was blindingly clear that the High Table would soon make a decision, and I might not like the outcome.
We met with Thomas, Axel, and the parents of the twins after the meeting. I was getting nervous without Liam, and I was sure the others could see me falling apart. Both Thomas and Axel sent their own hunters. I realized that neither of them hesitated, even though Axel still looked a bit bitter.
I appreciated the gesture, but nothing would calm the madness inside me except Liam.
Then, the three of us returned to our rooms. I felt a bit claustrophobic with all these guards around, a constant wall between you and everyone else. It only reminded me of the danger I was in.
A servant was granted entry to the room to serve us dinner. Aly, Ethan, and I sat around a small table, eating in silence.
“That went to s**t pretty quickly,” Aly rolled her eyes, “So, either you work with them or they say you’re an uncontrollable weapon?”
“At least I can choose from the five,” I commented dryly, taking another bite of my burger. It tasted like ashes after the meeting, but I needed something in my stomach.
“Does food usually come with a note?” Aly asked randomly, picking up my plate to retrieve a small card.
She flipped it in her hands and stared at the back. Her eyebrows furrowed more with each passing second, until a frown appeared on her face. I could already tell from her emotions whose card it was, although I had no idea what it said.
“What does he want now?” I frowned, snatching the card from her fingers when she turned her head with bitterness.
The note read:
«Room 412, 7:00 p.m. Don’t be late, these meetings are already difficult enough.»
“As much as I’m starting to hate him, we have to get Liam back,” I sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of my nose as a headache began to form. I gave Aly an apologetic look, “If you want to skip this meeting, I understand. If not, you’re welcome to come with us.”
“I know, Sussan. You don’t have to explain.,” Aly’s smile was small but friendly, “I’m not going to hide from the i***t. He’s not important enough for that.”
We stood outside room 412 almost two hours later. It had taken me years to divert the guards, but my abilities had been useful when it came to detecting someone nearby. Turns out, I could sense emotions up to a certain distance. With some concentration, I could sense how far and close those emotions were, which helped a lot in trying to identify the guards approaching.
We slipped into the room, and my eyes tried to adjust as we entered a dimly lit space. Only two small lamps were on, casting a muted, yellow light. Nicolas was leaning against the countertop, arms crossed over his chest. The jacket of his suit was folded over the dining chair.
“You look agitated,” Aly noted somewhat indignantly, raising an eyebrow toward him.
“This was the first meeting, and it’s already going to s**t. Aren’t you agitated too?” “Nothing is impossible, Zoe. There will always be a way. We have to keep fighting to change things,” Aly scoffed, “You might want to give up right now, but I plan on sticking around to fix the damn thing.”
“Let’s not drag this out. I’d like to get my brother back before the month ends,” Ethan’s growl filled the room, cutting through the tension and dismantling everything, “It’s time to uphold your end of the deal.”
Nicolas grimaced, the fire in his eyes extinguished. I felt a flash of concern in his emotions, but he had suppressed it instead of giving it life.
“There are some white wolves I know who need protection, and I need them to stay in your pack.”
Ethan was as stunned as I was. This wasn’t what we expected, not by a long shot.
“You want us to hide some white wolves?” I reiterated slowly, “Why these specific white wolves?”
“They’re not very powerful,” Nicolas commented curtly, “I owe a favor to a friend, this is that favor.”
Ethan paused for a long moment and looked in my direction.
“We’re going to need more details if we’re going to transport them to our territory.”
“Are you willing to risk war if we get caught?” Nicolas asked, his head slightly tilted. It was a subtle hint of interest in his otherwise sour demeanor.
This time, Ethan’s response was immediate.
“This agreement won’t change the war that’s sure to come.”
