Chapter 14

“Where have you been? I’ve hardly seen you for days “, Devon asked me. We were helping out in the new building , painting the walls. Ready for the school to open. ” Just been around , doing stuff with dad. Preparing for that alpha and his sister coming “, that was half of the truth. I have been doing that but not much of it. Most of my time I had been at the cave with Anthea, as soon as her shift was done at my house . We would meet an hour later at the cave. She would go home for a while , then we would both sneak back to the cave. After that first night three days ago , let’s just say we were both hooked. I had even taken one of the training mats out there and a few blankets to make it more comfortable for us. We took out some spare clothes also.

It was a whirl wind of naked flesh and pleasure. The condoms were working , and by only a smidgen of willpower had I not bit her. Last night had been close , but she had seen me losing control and she had stopped to allow me to calm down enough to then carry on.Anthea was gaining more confidence every time we connected , and I saw a side of her I doubt anyone had ever seen. Anthea was quite funny and quick-witted , smart and f*****g kind. She was way too nice , especially to me.

I found myself enjoying even the most mundane of conversations with her. But then the sun would rise and I had to go back to ignoring her existence when I saw her around my house. ” Yea, I guess that would take up a lot of time, but tonight let’s say me and you go on a run. Maybe down by the lake ” he said casually. My head snapped up to look at him from where I had been concentrating and looking at the wall while I cut in a line of paint. He was looking down at me , his eyebrows raised and arms crossed over his chest.

s**t , f*****g s**t. Looking around, I saw everyone else was busy. His expression told me everything he knew. Or at least knew something. Devon never wanted to run along the lake. Devon preferred his up on the hills. Throwing my brush into the tray , I stood up and got closer to him. “Not here “, I warned him and stomped out of the room , out of the building and around the back of the building. It still wasn’t private enough , someone could still overhear. So I shift into my wolf , then take off at a run, my wolf’s paws pounding the floor.

I could hear Devon’s wolf , close on my flank. When we got far enough away , I shifted back and spun on him. He was just shifting back , so I waited and crossed my arms over my chest. ” Go on ” I said to him. “Your f*****g Anthea ” were the first words out of his mouth. ” And how do you know that ?” I asked him like I’m accusing him. He stares at me and then looks at the floor and laughs. ” I had the night watch two nights ago. I got given the lake run. Half way round, I picked up your scent and followed it. Getting closer, I picked up on another scent, heard the sounds of f*****g. I was about to leave you with it. When I thought, I didn’t recognise the scent. So I thought I would just check it out and make sure everything was OK. “

He looks up at me, and huffs. ” You were f*****g Anthea , didn’t see it but damn sure got close enough to hear it. So , I came to find you last night and ask , well more like poke fun at you for it. But found you missing. Your dad hadn’t seen you so I thought let’s just see if he’s at it again and you were. Enzo , what the f**k are you doing ? You know full well if people knew you’d become a laughing stock. There are more than enough women in the pack for you to get your kicks off with. Why her ? Why the f*****g runt of the pack ?” His words pissed me off instantly. Without a thought, I charged at him and gripped home around his throat.

“Watch your f*****g mouth and remember who you are talking to “, I growled in his face. “Enzo what the f**k man “, he wheezed out and grabbed at my wrist. “Shes my f*****g mate ” I spat at him , not thinking. It just came out. I couldn’t take it back , and he definitely heard me. His eyes bugged out of his head. He stopped struggling , most likely from shock. I dropped him , and walked off cursing myself , for letting my anger get the better of me. “Since when ?” Devon asked, to my back. “I’ve known a while “, I said without looking at him. He was silent , turning to look at him. He looked confused.

” How long is a while , because you’ve been banging women left, right and centre for the past two months? ” I tipped my head , and gave him a work it out look. ” Thats the big rush isn’t it ? that is why you got your alpha strength , s**t that was ” . I growled “I know , and yes. I was hoping it was a f*****g joke”, I told him. ” Does your dad know ?” I gave him a don’t be stupid glare. “So why the hell you banging her ?” all his questions were f*****g me off , each one as insulting as the last. ” You have a mate bond riding your a*s , dickhead. Its not something that is just ignored. It rides your a*s worse than any addiction you’ve ever had , it draws you in like a huge a*s magnet. You’ll know when the mates throw your mate at you “. I ran my hands through my hair in frustration.

“What you going to do , I mean the pack ” he started and, I snapped my eyes at him and gave him a death glare. ” I know , don’t f*****g say it because I know. Its all sorted ” . He wasn’t satisfied , of course he wasn’t. So I told him everything , how I tried to break the bond and it wouldn’t. How f*****g cool and understanding she’s been about it all. And my plan, about getting a bonded mate that would hopefully break the link between us. What I didn’t tell him was how my feelings had started to change.

” So you and her are basically just f*****g her until this mystery girl turns up , who you have never seen or spoken to. Dude, why this girl ? Why not any of the others previously. What if she turns up and I don’t know she’s horrific ?” I shrugged. ” Her brother, the alpha of that pack, said he has a wolf in his pack that is gifted and they told him he needs to come here. When he started looking into us , he heard I was on the hunt for my mate. It can only be that, right ?”

It was his turn to look at me like I was thick. ” No it may not be that , because of the little detail that your mates right f*****g here ” I rolled my eyes at him. ” I know that a*****e , but maybe it could be that she will make the perfect bonded mate. And she is the key to breaking mine and Anthea’s link “. He lets out a little humorless laugh ” This situation is all kinds of f****d up , I mean why did the fates give you Anthea to start with. And what sucks about all of this is , we’ve been like brothers since we were young and you didn’t tell me any of this. Let me try and help you “.

” I didn’t want to accept it myself, Devon , telling you was me basically confirming it was right “. I walked a little further and found a spot that gave a great view and sat myself down. Looking out , I lost myself in thought for a while. Devon took a seat at the side of me. ” I’m sorry this is all happening to you Enzo. I could not imagine having to turn away my fated mate ” . I sighed and looked at him. ” She’s an amazing girl, Devon , all these years she’s been looked down on and you know what , she’s stronger than half the f*****g idiots in this pack. It takes strength to be as understanding as she’s being. My dad likes her, sticking up for her against the pack. Yet I’m too weak to do so , claim her as mine and tell them all to f*****g fight me if they have an issue with it. I’m not embarrassed to have her as a mate. I’m fearful. Fearful that the torment she receives now will be worse , or that they pack rebels and we have to run and live our lives as rouges. This is my home and my pack. I could not imagine being anywhere else but here “, I told him.

” Your speaking like a man who is falling in love ” he said so bluntly it shocks the hell out of me. I wanted to deny it , but the words wouldn’t come out. It pisses me off , I look back at the view and grit my teeth. ” It does not matter either way , it is a relationship destined to fail. If we run , we could end up resenting each other. Wolves don’t do well without a pack ” I said, with conviction.

” I’ll keep taking the lake run and give you two your time , and make sure no one else finds this out. I really hope, for your sake , the link breaks Brother. Or you don’t piss off the fates by questioning their choice for you. But I do see why you are doing this. If I was in your shoes , I would be considering the same ” I couldn’t give a f**k what the fates thought , they were the ones that put us both in this predicament to begin with. ” f**k them , don’t say a word about this to anyone. I’m trusting you with this ” he looked insulted that I had even felt the need to say it. But if this all got out what would the point in it all have been?
