Chapter 0113
Cara's POV
The Pack DarkWood hospital is eerily quiet. I only saw a handful of people as I rush through the lobby, a stark contrast to the usual droves of people coming and going.
But, of course.
It was the full moon.
Most of the hospital staff would be offsite tonight, if not outside running wild as wolves themselves, then most of the unlucky few assigned to work the overnight shift would be at the Pack House, tending to the newly shifted.
The first few shifts of a werewolf's life were usually the most dangerous. Not only that, but add in the already-raging hormones of teenagers turned wolf and it was usually a recipe for disaster. Having medical staff at the Pack House was a proactive step that tended to
pay
off.
So the hospital tonight was nearly barren.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" I call out, my voice echoing in the hallway of the Allergy
Department.
I'm quickly losing hope of finding anyone familiar with Mia's unique needs when I'm shocked to see a familiar face. It's one of Mia's normal doctors, Dr. Marlow.
Dr. Marlow adjusted her thick-framed glasses and walked towards me with increasing speed when she sees Mia lying limply in my arms, still in wolf form.
"What happened?" Dr. Marlow asks with her distinctive calm and professional tone.
"She shifted tonight, but it was..." I try to find the words to describe watching my daughter whimper in pain all night long, unable to use her human voice to communicate where it hurt.
I blink, bringing myself back to the moment. "It was very painful for her. She passed out on the way here. It doesn't look like she can shift back."
"We were afraid of that. Bring her into the room here, quickly." Dr. Marlow moves fast, and I almost have to run to follow her into the treatment room, a difficult task while holding my six-year-old.
I place my daughter on the bed as gently as I can manage. Dr. Marlow calls in a couple of nurses. They immediately begin placing tubes and wires all over Mia's little red and furry body..
Mia stirs, kicking her hind legs forcefully as Dr. Marlow sticks a syringe into one of her

veins, drawing blood. "I need to run some tests" the doctor explains to me.
I almost flinch seeing my daughter once again in pain, but I know it's for the best. She's in the hands of the best medical team available right now and whatever it takes to bring my daughter back to me in human form, it's worth it. I maintain my smooth and confident demeanor, a mask covering my nerves. In truth, the anxiety is rising within me, like a wave being pulled to high tide. I control it, stifling the sensation of nervousness just as I always have done. The minutes tick by, seeming to take years, waiting for an answer.
Will she be okay?
Is this the moment Mia will be unable to shift back?
Has she finally turned permanently into a wolf?
Has she finally turned feral?
"Cara," Dr. Marlow's voice draws me back from my thoughts. "I believe we know what medicine will help Mia turn back into human form, but it's a very rare medicine."
I arch my eyebrow at her curiously then cross my arms across my chest. "Well, whatever it takes. Please, give it to her."
"I intend to, but unfortunately, this compound is so rare that we don't maintain a supply of it here at the hospital. I'll need to call in a special request."
"Special request? Who are you calling to grant it?" I ask.
"That would be the pack's Beta, John," Dr. Marlow explains as she begins dialing the number on her phone.
"The Beta?" I ask, suddenly very confused. "Why should you call him? Wouldn't it be more prudent to get this medicine through the director of the hospital?"
I can hear the sound of the phone ringing as she holds the device close to her ear. She pulls the phone away slightly to answer me.
"Yes, normally that would be the proper protocol," she says. "But your case is a little more complicated due to special involvement."
"What does that mean? Do you mean she's not getting the same care as anyone else here would?" I feel the burn of outrage start to well up inside me.
Is this because I'm not technically a member of this pack?
"No, she's not getting the same care... Hello, John, one moment please," Dr. Marlow must have heard him answer her call halfway through her response to me.

It's enough to make me gasp.
Surely they wouldn't treat Mia as a second-class citizen here? Not after they've gotten to know her, having treated her for months now.
Dr. Marlow cups her hand over the microphone of her phone, turning towards me and dropping the volume of her voice, "Mia is not getting the same care as everyone else here," she repeats. "She's getting even better care," the doctor finishes.
"What?" I ask.
"Mia's case has been made an Ultra High Priority Case. That's why I was assigned to be stationed here tonight, just in case you had any difficulties. I was made to be available for her alone." "Ultra High Priority...." I say, my head spinning at the sudden turn of events.
Mia is getting... even better care?
"Yes," Dr. Marlow responds solemnly. "It also means that any updates in her condition and changes to her treatment plan get reported to the Alpha King's office directly."
My jaw drops.
"It has its benefits, trust me. Normally it could take as long as three weeks to find a pharmacy to fill the prescription I'm writing for Mia. With the Alpha King's help, we should have it delivered here very shortly," the doctor continues. "But... why?" I whisper, utterly confused.
Dr. Marlow shrugs. "It's not my place to ask those kinds of questions. But I do know that the Alpha King is very concerned about Mia's condition. He may even want to come here to see her himself."
I nod, not sure how to respond. I gesture with my hands, encouraging the doctor to return to her phone call with John, the call that will get Mia the medicine that she desperately needs.
I make eye contact with one of the nurses and point to the door, indicating that I'm going to take a moment in the hall to collect myself. The woman nods at me and continues to give my daughter fluids.
. I close the door to the treatment room behind me and lean back into it, heaving a heavy
sigh. It's been a very difficult night to begin with, let alone the news of Alaric's involvement in Mia's case.
I close my eyes for a moment, collecting my bearings.

When I open them again, I see a man in front of me, holding a bouquet of giant red roses.
Before I have time to think, he drops down to one knee, proclaiming confidently, "Cara Wilson, will you marry me?"
I'm completely stunned, paralyzed by the unexpectedness of the proposal. It takes me a moment to look at his face and see who it is.
A handsome blond man with his eyes tightly fixed on me, revealing a confident smile and shining teeth. The passing nurses are all attracted by his handsome, blushing and exclaiming softly. It's... Matthew Bedford?!
