Rejected, And Became A Heiress (Cara) -
My Billionaire Please Became 42
Chapter 0042
Richard's POV
I've been sitting at Cara's bedside for hours, trading watch with Ruby. She takes a shift watching Cara while I take care of my actual patients at the hospital, then we switch, and she sees patients while I watch Cara. It leaves little time for much else, like sleeping
But Cara is worth it. Family is worth it.
Especially to me....
My heart is filled with guilt for her. It makes me pain.
Suddenly, I see movement under the blanket at Cara's feet. It's probably just a hallucination. I'm so sleep deprived, I'm not sure I can trust myself.
There it goes again, that little flicker of movement.
No, there's no way.
Then it happens again.
And again.
Cara's wiggling her toes!
...She's awake!
A soft groan escapes her mouth. Her lips are dry and cracked, they almost look grey.
I shush her, rubbing her arms. "Shhh... shh... don't rush it. Take your time."
I try to be as soothing as I can, knowing that she'll probably be surprised to see me here, of all people.
I'm proven right as her eyes open, and her gaze reaches my face. The machines monitoring her vitals pick up speed and volume, showing me exactly how she feels about me being there. BEEP BEEP BEEP! BEEP BEEP BEEP!
Every heartbeat is a reminder of what I've done to her. What Lilia has done.
"I know, Cara. I'm sure I'm not the person you want to see right now. Ruby stepped out to do some work; she'll be back soon," I say, hoping this helps.
I try to reassure her, crossing my fingers that she'll calm down.
Her heart rate slows a bit hearing Ruby's name It's still too fast for my liking, but at least

it's some improvement.
I hesitate for a moment before speaking again. I'm not sure how much I should say, but if I were in her shoes, I know I'd be demanding answers.
And I wouldn't care who those answers came from, as long as they were the truth.
The truth is just about the only thing that I can give Cara right now.
Ruby and I have been with you since you arrived here at the hospital. Would you like me to tell you the details?" I'd understand if she'd rather wait for a friendlier face, but she does need to know.

Cara moves her head slowly up and down, the closest thing to a nod that she can manage her current state.
There are dark purplish circles under her eyes, and her skin has an unnatural yellow green tinge. Bruises run along all of her limbs.
She must be in a tremendous amount of pain right now, even with the medication that's flowing through the tube in her arm.
"You were in a vehicle accident. Do you remember that?" I try to keep my voice low and
steady.
Cara nods again. I see her swallow, which is a good sign.
"You have many injuries, many broken bones. But your babies are safe. The other driver. somehow walked away with barely a scratch, but you... weren't so lucky."
That's the one thing I dislike about medicine-sometimes the world is just so unfair. Bad things happen to good people, and there's nothing we can do about it except try to fix people once they're hurt.
Some scars never heal, though. I'm sure some of the scars Cara will carry from this won't be visible. They won't even be physical.
Cara whispers something, but her voice is too soft and scratchy, I can't understand the
words.
I try to shush her again. It's probably much too soon for her to attempt to talk, but she keeps trying. She's adamant about saying this, whatever it is.
I lean in closer to her, "What was tha
...B babies?" She asks.
It looks like just uttering that single word took a lot of her energy.
"Yes, your twins are safe, thank goodness. The medical team still isn't sure how that's possible..." The force of the accident could've very well killed all three of them.

Cara's eyelids shoot wide open, and the machines start to beep loudly again. Did she not know...?
"Where's... Lucy?" Cara asks weakly, suddenly changing subjects. Her eyes are downcast, looking without seeing, almost like she's mentally searching for something. "Lucy?" I ask. Who's Lucy?
I look at Cara's medical chart, and see that Lucy is the name of Cara's wolf.
What does Cara mean, 'where' is she?
"I don't understand. Isn't she in there?" I point to Cara's forehead.
Cara gently shakes her head from side to side. "She's... gone..."
A look of sad and concern rests on Cara's face.
Gone? Hmm...
"I've heard of this... it's rare, but she could be... in hibernation." I say, recalling a seminar I attended at one of the medical schools.
"In very rare circumstances, if a wolf expends a tremendous amount of energy, they can sink back, deep in the far recesses of the mind, in an unconscious state called hibernation while they recover. I wonder... maybe that's what happened to your Lucy after the accident," I explain.
Thinking about this more, I add, more to myself than to Cara, "That must be why the babies are still alive. Lucy must've used nearly all of her strength to-"
"She... saved... us." Cara whispers.
Suddenly, the medical machines start beeping very quickly. Cara's eyelids close, and her face goes blank.
No! Cara! I press the emergency call button, hoping additional staff arrives quickly.
The machines go back to a steady, but very, very slow rhythm just as a few nurses run through the doorway.
We check her vitals and look at the readings on the monitors.
She's slipped into a coma.
The news must've been too much for Cara.
How much can one she wolf really take?
And Cara doesn't even know she's a princess yet. That she's my sister.

I look at Cara's sleeping face feeling more determined than ever to set things right. The part I've played in all of the misery that Cara has endured lately is just unacceptable. I need to fix this, somehow.
I make a silent vow to Cara as she lay in the hospital bed..
She's going to get better.
Her babies are going to grow up happy and healthy.
And I'm going to find a way to get Lucy back to her.
Goddess, I make my promise here... I will find a way to heal all she needs, no matter how difficult it may be.
Goddess, please bless Cara...
