Rejected, Broken And Forgotten -
Chapter 29
Jeffery’s POV
Well, I will be damned, the little Queen called me as old as the mountains and Jeffrey the grey, topical! I can not help but smile. She is something else. I have never served a Queen like her before. She would become known as the first Queen of Wessex and one of the best the Kingdom has ever seen. She is a fighter, and she will fight for her people. I have all the confidence in her and Walker. I will need to talk to them about changing their names. What their mothers thought when they named them, I do not know. King Walker and Queen Paris do not sound right for the history books. I would love Paris to be known as Katherine the second and Walker as Federick the second. Yes, that sounds much better. I will talk to them about changing their names. I am dragging Elena out of the house and to a place where I can speak to her alone. I am not planning on taking the crazy one as my mate! I have dignity, and Paris will tease me endlessly if I take her as my mate. Can you imagine Jeffrey the crazy? Nope, that isn’t going to happen all my life on earth. I have never had a “batshit crazy” (as Paris will call her) mate.
“Jeff, are you mad at me? Stop dragging me and let me walk by myself. I will not run away,” Elena says.
“Mad, it is an understatement. I am not mad. I am furious,” I say. I throw her on the ground inside an old house where no one lives.
“Please, do not reject me. I promise I am not crazy. I thought Walker was my mate, but I know now that he is my brother and not my mate. I do not have any romantic feelings for Walker,” Elena begs me.
“That is not a good reason for me not to reject you,” I say.
“But I am your mate, and that is a good reason,” Elena says.
“How old are you, Elena? I am not your plaything,” I ask.
“You know how old I am. You know I am nineteen,” Elena says. I know, but I wanted to hear it from her mouth. My wolf is going wild for his mate, but I learned to suppress him long ago. Not every mate we had was good for the Kingdom or us, and I have learned to keep my feelings and my wolf’s s****l urges under control. I have not been a High Priest of the Moon Goddess all my life. There is a reason she made me live for so long, and I am not ready to share that reason with anyone. Even after all these years, I am still ashamed of what I have done. I might tell Paris and Walker when we are alone, as they will have to know before they decide to take me into their court. I am not proud of my past, but I know the Moon Goddess has forgiven me and that her wrath will not befall the Kings and Queens I serve. Maybe I should ask her what to do about Elena.
“What the hell am I supposed to do with you?” I ask Elena.
“Accept me as your mate, and I will be faithful. I will even help you to go undetected into the castle as my father trusts me. We can save the others with the help of the rebels. It is not like I love my father and mother anyway. They are crazy, and I do not believe in them anymore. Please, Jeff, give me a chance to prove that I am loyal,” Elena says and looks at me with puppy dog eyes.
“Fine, come with me. You and I are going to spy on your father,” I say. I know if she betrays me, she will not cross the others, as I will kill her before she can tell where they are hiding in plain sight. I am not stupid and want to give her a fair chance. I need to test her. I know it will ask me a lot not to kill her anyway. I can not bear the thought of Paris teasing me over my stupid mate! What can I do? She is my mate and deserves a fair chance.
“I will show you that I am worthy of being the mate of the oldest werewolf I know,” Elena says, and she makes it sound like it is the most wonderful in the world. Again, I do not know if it is a compliment or not.
“Thank you, I think,” I say.
“Well, it is an honor to be your mate. Let’s go. I know how my father works, and he will have most of his army with him, but he will have a few spies out to see if someone is watching them. Put on this,” Elena says. She looks through her bag and hands me a uniform that looks like her men’s uniforms. We start walking to the castle where John is keeping the old Kings and Queens. As we reach a hill near the palace, some of John’s men walk toward us.
“Princess Elena, it is good to see you again,” One of the men says.
“Good day, General. Where are you going?” Elena asks.
“To a small village to the south, we heard that the rebels might be there, so we want to go and spy,” The general says.
“To the south? My men and I were in the south all day yesterday. I think your information is wrong,” Elena lies without blinking an eye.
“Damn, we were so excited. We thought we got the rebel prince this time,” The general says.
“Well, you are wasting your time and energy. I heard they went north, but I also heard he is now the King of Sussex,” Elena says. I know she is trying to find out how much John and his men know. Okay, so maybe she is not as crazy and stupid as I think.
“Yeah, but we heard he married the Queen of Essex and that the Kingdom has become one and is now called Wessex,” The general says.
“Where did you hear that?” Elena asks, looking upset. She can act. She knows her men all think she is still running after Walker and that she knows they will think she will be upset. Clever, mate!
“Well, we heard it from the Kings themselves as they are now mind-linked to the wolves of Wessex. King John is distraught, and I am sorry if I upset you. You know that when the two kingdoms unite, the end of Mercia is near, according to the legend,” The general says.
“I will survive. The so-called legend is an old wives’ tale, and I do not believe in it. We are Mercia, and we are strong! We will win any war at any time,” Elena says, but I know she does not mean it, as she has no respect for the man she is talking to. I can hear and feel it! She is acting, and she does a good job.
“Well, we will return to the castle then. It is no use going south,” the general says, and he and his men turn around and walk away. I can feel their morale is low, and they do not want to fight for Mercia anymore, as they know about the legend, and most werewolves know that our legends always come true.
“Well, that went well. I can feel their morale is low, and they are ready to give up. We need to attack them fast before my father can come up with something to get them to believe in him again,” Elena says.
“Well, you could have mind-linked them. Why didn’t you when you attacked us at the village?” I ask as I only think of it now.
“First of all, Walker was there, and I was protecting him, and secondly, you are my mate, and I will not betray my mate,” Elena says.
“And your men? Why don’t they mind-link John?” I ask.
“They lost faith in him long ago, and they think I must be Queen of Mercia and that Oliver is a coward for not wanting to fight while I fight,” Elena says. So my Queen and mate are both strong she-wolves. I can get why the men will instead follow Elena more than Oliver. He is a coward, while Elena has a fighting spirit. I also know why some do not follow her and follow John and Oliver. They think she is crazy about wanting her half-brother. Who can blame them? I also thought she was crazy. I feel like everything is a mess, but order will be born out of chaos.
“I can not mind-link with my father and ask him where his men are. So we have better go and spy on them. He does not trust me. He thinks I am crazy like everyone else. It will make it easy for us to spy on them. I will say hello to my dear father and mother. Then we can see where the guards and most of the army are,” Elena says. I can not believe I will walk right into the lion’s den with a mate I do not know if I can trust, but it is a chance I am willing to take.
“How do I know you will not betray me?” I ask.
“You don’t. You will have to trust me,” Elena says with a smile.
“You are asking a lot of me after running away from me for so long and running after Walker,” I say.
“I did not want you to reject me, and I was protecting Walker, not running after him. I know that now. Will you trust me?” Elena asks.
“I will. By the way, I do not think you are crazy anymore. I think you are clever and fool everyone into thinking you are crazy. I still can not figure out why, but I will,” I say. I was not born yesterday. I know when someone is putting on a charade. Elena is busy with her little game, and I will figure out what it is if she is unwilling to tell me.
“Haha, you know too much, wise one,” Elena says.
“Yeah, why did you only decide to show up after the wedding and put on a scene?” I ask.
“Because I believe in legends, and I want it to happen. I do not think Mercia deserves to be a kingdom. You and I know the history of Mercia and how my family stole the grounds from Essex and Sussex. I wanted Wessex to be formed and my brother to become the King of Wessex, but the right brother, not the coward that thinks he will become King of Mercia one day. You can believe me or not. I do not care,” Elena says as she walks to the castle. Strangely enough, I do believe her. We reach the castle, and Elena walks in. I stay in the background, afraid that King John or Oliver may recognize me as the High Priest that caused all the chaos.
“Elena, what brings you here?” Oliver asks as we walk in. I can see George recognizes me, but he pretends not to.
“Well, big brother, can a sister not visit her brother and her parents?” Elena asks.
“Where were you the last couple of weeks?” John asks.
“In the south looking for the rebel prince, but I hear he is King of Wessex now, or so your guards say. I hear he has a bloody Queen. Is it true?” Elena asks, sounding upset.
“I see you are still as crazy as ever,” Oliver says sarcastically, and he and his she-wolf laugh. I feel my b***d boiling as they insult my mate! I keep quiet, though, as I do not want to betray myself. I will get them for being rude to my mate.
“I see you have a mate at last. You do know my brother is a coward, and I am crazy? You are getting yourself into something you may regret one day,” Elena says to Oliver’s she-wolf.
“Shut up, Elena. You are crazy as f**k, and I do not want to see you. Why don’t you return to the hole you crawled out of?” Oliver says.
“Go play outside, Elena. We are busy,” John says. I can see John is embarrassed by his daughter, but I also know that is what Elena wants as she needs to greet them, so they know she is there, and now she can go outside to spy without them being suspicious of her. My mate is genuinely clever.
“Fine. See you later,” Elena says, and we have the whole afternoon to walk among the guards and army spying on them. When we go home, we know where everyone and everything is. I am very impressed with my mate. We just left as John and Oliver are used to Elena coming and going as she pleases, and they do not expect her to say goodbye.
