Special Chapter: Kayden’s POV

As I bolted away quickly, I didn’t have the chance to speak to Evelyn or even look back because the Vampires were seriously hot on my trail.

I ran for all I was worth but they wouldn’t stop chasing, I instantly remembered Voithós’s advice and tried to look for a place to hide but I found none.

This is seriously one of the times that I really appreciate Neko, my wolf and desperately wish that I could transform so I would be able to easily escape these b***d sucking bastards.

I put in more effort and nearly grew out of breath but despite the extra effort, I was too slow for them. They were right behind me and could have easily caught me if they reached out but surprisingly, they didn’t and it left me wondering if they were just chasing me around for fun.

It began to seem as if I was their little pastime and they were just letting me run around until I was tired so they’d catch me and taunt me, just like a little mouse.

The realization made me so angry that I somehow quickened my speed and took them completely by surprise, I put a good distance between them and myself and quickly began looking for hiding options because my body is already giving me signs, if I don’t stop and rest soon, I’ll surely collapse and it would be game over.

Is this really how humans feel? They’re so weak and vulnerable and yet so civilized, I wonder how they survive everyday without any power of any kind.

I don’t have time to think too much as my eyes quickly fall on a dark alley. It seemed to be a good hiding place so I quickly diverted into it. I searched around quickly for where to hide and I caught sight of a group of large cardboard boxes stacked in a corner of the alley, it wasn’t far from a big trash dumpster that looked big enough to hide in but I knew that no matter how uncomfortable it would be, the cardboard box was my best bet.

Not only would it smell better, it would also help me make less sound while observing the situation. Oh Selene help me.

I quickly dart to the group of huge cardboard boxes and pick the biggest one. It would be very difficult to stay long in it because it would be very tight and uncomfortable but if I wished to stay alive, comfort had to be ruled out of everything because it’s apparently a luxury that I don’t have.

I squeeze into the box before covering it up and I feel cramps in every part of my body due to the exertion but I stay still as I hear the footsteps approaching.

I bring my hand to my mouth, as if trying to stop myself from breathing as the footsteps grow nearer and nearer. This is such a terribly awkward situation. I’ve never felt so helpless and afraid in my entire life and it’s all because of Voithós.

If he was going to send us on such a dangerous mission, then why on Earth did he have to take away our wolves. Is he trying to get us killed or something?

If I get caught, I won’t be able to defend myself and it would just be disastrous. I can’t help but wonder how Evelyn is faring.

Is she doing alright? What on Earth could be happening to her right now? I can only hope and pray that she’s safe.

My breath hitched in my throat and my heart began beating wildly against my ribcage when I heard or rather felt someone right in front of my cardboard box.

“Where could that little bastard have gone, I wonder.” One of the Vampires said with a laugh and it was obvious that he knew that I was in here. Oh damn it, I’ll be caught despite all my efforts.

How will I be able to fight them off? Is this really the end? I closed my eyes, not wanting to imagine it as my fears intensified. I don’t want to die now, I want to be able to see Evelyn and Nevaeh one more time. I want to be able to hug my brother and tease my sister in law and I want to teach my little nephew or niece how to hunt like a Lakiel. Will I really die here?

The thoughts flood my mind as I gulp silently. Through the same opening on the box, I saw a hand come to the cardboard as if trying to open it and I braced myself for the worse but then, it just suddenly stopped as quickly as it came.

I heard a heavy sound and I wondered just what was going on out there. I couldn’t take the risk of opening the cardboard to take a look or it’ll be the same as signing a death warrant.

“Over there. Come on, I think he’s there.” I heard one of the Vampires say. “But someone’s obviously here, can’t you hear the sound of their heartbeat?” The other argued.

“It’s just probably a cat. This alleyway is flooded with homeless dogs and cats and they find shelter here and sleep at night in these boxes. Didn’t you just hear the loud sound coming from over there? Someone just ran past and he’s the only one who could be foolish enough to be outside at this time so it has to be the man we’re chasing. Come on, there’s not much time. We have to catch him quickly before he escapes because if we don’t, Carter won’t spare us.” The second Vampire said and I soon heard both of them run off until the sound of their feet had been drowned by the distance.

I listened carefully for any nearby sounds to see if it would be safe enough to get out yet. When I was sure I didn’t hear anything, I released a huge but quiet sigh of relief and was about to open the cardboard box and poke my head out to see if the coast was clear when someone beat me to it.

My heart instantly went up my throat when the lid of the cardboard box threw open and a figure came in front of me. Due to the darkness, it took some time for my eyes to adjust to it and see that it was a woman and when I did, a small amount of my anxiety instantly disappeared but I remained alert nonetheless.

What if this woman was also a vampire and she’d only found me so she could drink my b***d? I hate getting violent with women but if the situation calls for it, then I will.

In the Kingdom of Luceras, it’s obvious that the norm here is survival of the fittest. I raised my hand up to protect myself against any attack but she slapped my hand down.

“Really? Is this how you treat someone who’s risking her life and the life of her friends to save you?” She questioned.

“What do you mean?” I instantly questioned, confused.

“There’s no time to chat. The Vampires are very smart, they will realize they’ve been tricked and will return soon. We have to go now if we wish to escape alive.” The woman told me and stretched forth her hand for me to take it but I refused.

There is definitely no way in this world that I’d just go with a strange woman. What if she’s one of them? What if she’s only taking me to the Vampires so I can be feasted upon. This is Luceras so no one can be trusted here, no one except Evelyn but how do I get out of this rough situation? Nothing seems to be working.

Even through the darkness, I could see her glaring at me.

“I shouldn’t have wasted my time trying to save you. You’re the one in trouble but yet you’re the one being so arrogant. There’s not much of us left in this Kingdom and that’s why I’ll forgive you and ask you one last time, take my hand and come with me. I’ll help you escape from the Vampires and take you somewhere safe.” She offered but I still refused. I’m currently ordinary so I can’t see much in the dark, I can barely see her face so I can’t ascertain if she has fangs. I can’t take the risk of leaving with this strange woman. I’d rather stay here and try to survive on my own.

“Are you being serious right now? The Vampires will be back anytime soon. Come with me now before it’s too late.” She said and just then, the Vampires showed up.

“Well, well, what do we have here? A sweet little human girl trying to play hero. We’ll have fun desecrating your body and drinking all your sweet nectar until there’s nothing left and then we’ll send your boyfriend with you to hell so that in another life, you’ll never dare try to stand against us.” One of the vampires said with a huge grin. His fangs glittering in the darkness.
