Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 64
When Katie woke up the next morning, her face was flushed.
Adam sat by the bedside, and she was cuddled in his arms like a child. From the looks of it, she had stayed in this position the whole night. "Are you awake? Do you want to sleep some more?" asked Adam gently.
Katie raised her head and said with a red face, "Why didn't you wake me up? Your arms and legs must be numb."
Adam continued in a gentle tone, "Don't worry, I'm fine. You should sleep some more. I'm going downstairs to get breakfast for you and Annie."
Adam got up and exited the room. As Katie watched the departing figure, her heart filled with happiness.
An hour later, the trio finished breakfast. Katie and Adam accompanied Annie to the kindergarten before heading to Hartley Group.
As Katie headed upstairs, Adam's phone rang.
"It's me, Trey. Is Katie at work? Hurry to the police station and save me!" urged Trey.
Adam frowned. Was Dad arrested again? What's happening?
He hurried to the police station, thinking that he would witness the same plot as last time. However, when he bailed his father-in-law out, he discovered that something was amiss. This time, Trey was arrested not because he was playing cards and gambling but because he was... getting a massage.
How can you get arrested for getting a massage? It just doesn't make any sense... Unless the place where he got the massage was a whorehouse.
No wonder he didn't call my mother-in-law and waited until Katie was at work before calling me.
Trey was soon released, but the cops made sure to heap rebuke on him even as they let him go.
As they left the police station, Adam hesitated before saying, "Dad, you shouldn't visit those places from now on. You'll be in trouble if Katie and Mom get wind of it."
Trey frowned and said, "I didn't go there because I wanted to. A friend invited me, and it's not like I could just refuse.
"Moreover, this is something that every man does, or are you saying that you have never visited such a place?"
Adam shook his head and said, "No, I haven't."
Trey said with a sneer, "Sure, sure."
Adam sighed. "Dad, next time, if your friend really wants to get a massage and you can't refuse, maybe try a spa. Otherwise, other than breaking the law you might also catch some disease and-"
"Okay, I get it." Trey interrupted him and said, "I called you to bail me out, not to give me a lecture. I don't want to owe you anything, so tell me how much it was. I'll pay you back." "Dad, that's not what I meant."
"Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I know that you're poor, but you should really try looking for a job. You're a young man who's in his prime, aren't you embarrassed asking my daughter for money?" said Trey while taking out a few hundred-dollar bills from his bulging wallet. Adam furrowed his brows.
He knew how life had been for Trey and Gemma during the past few years. After getting kicked out of the family, they had not received a single cent from the Hartleys. They had to rely on their hard work to make ends meet.
Trey worked as a security guard for a family in the neighborhood, and Gemma was not in a much better position either. They did not have any savings, and the money was managed by Gemma. Therefore, it was very strange for Trey to go around with a wallet bursting with cash.
Where did all this money come from? Did he win it while gambling?
Adam quickly guessed the answer. "Dad, this money-"
"Here is 500 dollars. It should be enough, right? Remember, don't tell Gemma or Katie about what happened today." Trey handed Adam the money.
Since Adam kept refusing, Trey directly stuffed the money in his hand and said impatiently, "If I'm giving it to you, just take it. Why are you making such a fuss? Anyway, did you come by car? Take me home then... No, wait. Take me to the bank first." Adam hailed a taxi for Trey. His car was damaged yesterday, so he had left it for repair.
After a brief moment of surprise, Trey sneered, "Have you returned that rented car? Next time, don't waste money on useless stuff just to have a moment of glory. Anyway, I can go back alone. You don't need to go along." "Dad, I don't have anything to do. I'll come with you," said Adam.
He felt that Trey was acting strange, and all that money was definitely suspicious. Fearing that Trey was continuing to feed his gambling addiction, Adam wanted to follow him to apprise himself of the situation. What if Trey had no intention of going home but wanted to gamble?
Trey said anxiously, "What need is there to accompany me? I'm tired, and I'll go to sleep right away. I won't have time to attend to you."
Seeing the dodgy look in Trey's eyes, Adam knew that his guess was correct. However, he did not expose his father-in-law as he was someone who hated getting embarrassed.
"Dad, I don't feel at ease letting you go home alone. After all, you have so much money with you. I'll go with you until the doorstep and leave."
"Whatever!" said Trey unhappily before getting into the taxi.
The duo first went to a bank, where Trey deposited the money in his account, freeing himself of the burden.
Once they got back home, Trey could not help but say, "Can you not come in? If Gemma sees you, she'll lose her temper again."
Adam nodded and turned to leave when he heard voices inside the house.
"Gemma, you have to tell Katie to prepare a good job for my daughter."
"Amanda, don't worry. Katie is in charge of a project worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and the people working for her will have many job opportunities. She'll definitely listen to me and give your daughter an opportunity." Adam stopped in his tracks. Is it a guest? Do they want Katie to give them a job? Moreover, Mom agreed so readily...
Adam shook his head. He knew that something like this was bound to happen. It was true that there would be a lot of job opportunities for people working for Katie, and it was normal to give friends and relatives a head start. But what was said next left him dumbfounded.
"Gemma, my daughter graduated from a prestigious university, so you must tell Katie to give her a nice job with a six-figure salary.
"And the job mustn't be too hard. My daughter has been pampered since she was a child, and she can't endure too much hardship.
"Ah, I almost forgot. My daughter doesn't want to go to the construction site, so tell Katie to make her a manager. Staying under the sun for several hours every day will ruin her skin."
"Amanda, I know you're my sister, but aren't these requests a little bit... excessive?" said Gemma with some hesitation.
"You call this excessive? I even wanted to ask Katie to give my daughter a nice car.
"Right, she should look for a nice place for my daughter to stay as well. It would be best if it's a place with good furnishings, appliances, and security measures.
"Gemma, I know about what your family went through these past few years. Since we're relatives, I thought I would let my daughter give you a hand. No need to refuse, really."
Adam frowned and turned around, following Trey into the house. He was curious about these relatives who had so many requests.
When he entered the room, he saw a woman in plain clothing sitting on the sofa. Her skin was sallow, and she looked around the same age as Gemma. Beside her sat an attractive girl in her twenties whose facial features bore some similarities with Katie's. The girl's hair was dyed brown, and the ends were carefully curled. She wore light make-up and donned a gorgeous red dress, looking somewhat impatient as she fiddled with her phone.
Is this girl the top graduate from a prestigious university who wants a six-figure salary?
Adam was disappointed. If someone with her attitude went to look for a job, very few people would hire them.
"Hmm? Why did you follow me?" Trey frowned.
"Trey, you're back. Look who's here!" said Gemma. In the next moment, her complexion changed, and she demanded coldly, "Why are you here?"
Adam said, "Mom, I was at the door when I heard you had guests, so I came in to say hi."
"No need for that. Leave!" said Gemma, trying to drive him away.
"Gemma, who is that? Why do you want to kick him... Wait, did he just call you 'Mom'? Is he Katie's husband?"
Amanda, who was on the sofa, immediately got up and looked at Adam in disbelief. "Is he that madman?"
Gemma's face darkened. This bastard is embarrassing me again!
Adam did not mind her manners and greeted her politely, "You should be Mom's sister, correct? My name is Adam Drake, and I'm Katie's husband." Amanda frowned. "Yeah, I've heard of you."
The girl on the sofa glanced at Adam, sneered, and returned to fiddling with the phone.
Adam did not know what her name was. When he and Katie got married, neither relatives nor friends were invited.
