Salute To The General -
Chapter 3381 Farewell
Hepburn just returned to the banquet hall when Eugene IV approached her, accompanied by two bodyguards.
She quickly bowed. "Greetings, Pope Eugene."
Eugene IV nodded slightly before casually asking, "Have you seen Mr. Cross?"
Upon hearing this, Hepburn was taken aback. A faint blush of embarrassment tinted her cheeks momentarily. However, she maintained a composed demeanor and replied, "I encountered him smoking in the hallway earlier. We exchanged a brief conversation and bid each other farewell."
Eugene IV nodded. "Okay, you may leave now."
Hepburn gave a slight bow and made to leave.
However, Eugene IV suddenly called out to her, "Wait a moment."
Confused, Hepburn looked at Eugene IV.
Eugene IV casually asked, "You've been spending a lot of time with Mr. Cross recently, haven't you?"
Hepburn's flustered thoughts raced as she considered the possibility that Eugene IV had somehow discovered her affection for Nathan. She wondered if the pope intended to caution her and advise her to maintain a distance from him.
She was just about to explain when Eugene IV continued, "Have you noticed anything unusual about him? For example, any abnormal behavior?"
Taken aback once again, Hepburn responded instinctively, "No, not at all! Mr. Cross always conducts himself with grace and composure. He is truly admirable. Is there something amiss, Pope Eugene?"
Upon hearing that Nathan had not exhibited any unusual behavior, Eugene IV was slightly disappointed. He waved his hand and said, "It's nothing. I was just asking casually. You may leave now."
Although a multitude of questions swirled within Hepburn's heart, she hesitated to ask further, sensing that the man before her was unwilling to divulge any more information. With a respectful tone, she simply replied, "Yes." Eugene IV, accompanied by his two subordinates, left the hall and headed toward the corridor outside.
As expected, Nathan was sitting on the bench, smoking alone.
The light cast a slanted glow on Nathan, illuminating his handsome face in a mix of light and shadow, making him appear both mysterious and charismatic.
"Mr. Cross, instead of drinking and chatting with the top brass of the alliance inside, why are you out here smoking?"
Nathan looked up and saw Eugene IV. He smiled slightly and said, "Drinking and chatting? I believe you're well aware that they are just fighting for their own interests. I'd rather not get involved."
Eugene IV said with a smile, "Is this what you Eurasians refer to as 'As he contends for nothing, none in the world can contend with him"?"
Nathan laughed heartily and replied,
"Eurasia is not Ariarica, and I am not Wolfric. I don't have the ambition to conquer the world. My only wish is to safeguard our nation and maintain peace throughout the world."
ve
Eugene IV chuckled audibly in response. "It seems our aspirations align, aiming for nothing less than, world peace. The alliance will be-
dissolved tomorrow. I wonderet
would you care to join me fora drink, as two kindred spirits?"
Nathan glanced at Eugene IV and calmly said, "Sure!"
Both of them, each accompanied by their own subordinates, walked into the hall together.
Inside the hall, the alliance soldiers were standing in small groups, drinking and celebrating together. Eugene IV and Nathan found an inconspicuous spot to sit down.
An attendant approached gracefully, carrying a tray with an assortment of beverages including champagne, red wine and other options. With a polite tone, she inquired, "Commander Cross, Pope Eugene, may inquire about your preference for a beverage? Would you prefer champagne or red wine?"
Before Nathan could speak, Eugene IV had already made a decision for him. "Let's have some red wine."
The attendant replied with a smile, "Sure!"
With that, she gracefully placed two glasses of red wine from the tray in front of Nathan and Eugene IV.
After telling them to summon her if needed, she got up and left.
With a genial smile, Eugene IV raised his glass of red wine, extending an invitation to Nathan for a drink. He also motioned to one of his attentive bodyguards to retrieve some food from the nearby buffet table.
In a deliberate and somewhat resounding voice, he proclaimed, "To the triumph of the alliance! Let us celebrate the downfall of those accursed vampires. Nathan, let us raise our glasses in a toast."
As he spoke, he carefully observed Nathan's expression, as if trying to catch a hint of something.
