Chapter 108

The garage door open, and the lights immediately turned on. Without waiting for the car for a second, Alexander shoved the door open and climbed out, his movements fast and agitated.

He took a deep breath, his chest rising and falling heavily as he walked away. The rage within him burned dangerously close to the surface.

Alexander stormed down the hall, his jaw clenched, his eyes dark and stormy.

Without a word, he stormed into their bedroom, his hands shaking with anger as he yanked blankets and pillows out of the closet.

He spun around and headed toward one of the guest room. The weight of his decisions felt like a crushing load he could no longer ignore.

He didn't care about the look of confusion on Annie's face or the pleading desperation in her eyes. He was done pretending, done plastering on a mask of normalcy.

Annie's eyes widened in disbelief, her mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air.

This could not be happening. She thought.

Anger she had considered, but not, not Alexander turning his back on her. No! The panic surged through her veins like ice, freezing her in place.

"Alexander, wait!" she exclaimed, her voice shrill with desperation. She ran to him, her heart pounding within her ears. She reached out, her trembling fingers catching his wrist just as he was about to step into the guest room.

"Please, Alexander!" she cried, her voice breaking. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen! I'm sorry, I truly am! Please, don't do this to me, to our child,"

Her eyes shone with tears, her face contorted with fear,

But Alexander barely turned his head, his jaw clenched so tightly she could almost hear his teeth grinding together.

Without a word, he wrenched his arm from her grasp, the motion fast and cold.

"Alexander." her voice wavered, the tears now streaming freely down her cheeks.

But he didn't stop, didn't look back as he stepped into the room with a finality that makes her heart shattered into a million shards.

The door clicked shut, the lock turned. That sound was like a dagger in her chest.

Annie sank to the floor, leaned her back against the door that had closed between them. Her breathing came in raged spurts. Anger and frustration swirled inside her like a storm. Her body was trembling; she clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms, almost drawing blood. The veins in her neck strained with the force of her anger, and she clenched her jaw tighter until it hurt.

How dare he?! She screamed in her mind.

She had been playing her part perfectly well but now everything was crumbling down in front of her eyes.

Emma had been invited into that house when she, his girlfriend, had been treated like an intruder.

Annie's chest heaved with anger. "This is all your fault, Brianna," she hissed under her breath, her eyes glinting with malice.

Her mind went back to her plan four years ago. The plan would have guaranteed her place by Alexander's side forever.

If she had succeeded in ridding herself of Brianna back then, none of this would be happening. Brianna's wouldn't have been here to condemn her anymore.

Even Vivian wouldn't have dared to challenge her. And Emma... she would have been on almost the same level as Emma.

Her fingers curled into the fabric of her dress, rage bubbling up inside her.

She had taken far more than her share of insults tonight.

The cold loathing in Brianna's eyes gnawed in her mind.

If Alexander hadn't appeared when he had, she knew the humiliation that would have consumed her. The very thought made her stomach rumbled violently.

'I didn't plan to lose control, she thought bitterly. But how could she not, seeing Emma there, being treated like she belonged? The insult had been too much, the hatred too obvious. She had been pushed to the edge.

Wiping her tears away with the back of her hand, Annie drew in a shaky breath.
