Emma dialed a familiar number, her fingers lingering on the buttons as she thought of her mother. She hadn't called i while, the weight of distance and time making the need to hear her mother's voice almost unbearable. As she raised th phone to her ear, her heart beat a little faster with each ring. Finally, after five rings, Mrs. Walker's voice filled the line, weaker than Emma remembered.

"Mom," Emma said, her voice trembling as she fought back tears

"My dear, how are you?" Mrs. Walker's voice was soft, each word slow, like it took all her strength to speak.

"Good, but I miss you, mother. I can't wait to be with you again

"And me too, Emma, but Emily has to come first. I'm old and will die, and the happy woman of death approaches now. Having you and my babies is more than enough for me, Emma.

"Mom, don't talk like that. No one is dying. We will soon be back

As if sensing her mother's sadness, little Emily suddenly tugged at her hand. "Mom, I want to talk to Grandma," she said. small voice full of excitement.

Emma handed her daughter the phone, giving Emily a smile before leaving the room to compose herself. She had so m to handle that morning, her mind running through the endless list of responsibilities. Emma handed Emily the phone and walked out of the room; she had a lot on her plate this morning.

On her way to the hospital, Emma dropped Ethan off at his new daycare, which wasn't that far away from the hospital in case of emergency, and headed into the hospital after taking a deep sigh. Today marked another episode of her life, an episode she wished she could put an end to before it could even begin.

After making sure her daughter was being attended to by the doctors who were now aware of her recent agreement with Alexander and promise to look after her daughter, she left for Ms. Brianna's VIP room.

She knocked twice and stepped inside, hoping that the older woman was asleep, but as fate would have it, Brianna was wic awake, and her weak eyes brightened up the moment she spotted Emma.

She smiled, gesturing for Emma to sit next to her.

And Emma did as she was told. Although Emma was happy to reunite with the old woman once again, she couldn't ignore the fact that Brianna was one of her past, and one way or another working as Brianna's caregiver means running into Alexander at regular intervals, something Emma does not wish to happen.

"Where is your husband?" Mrs. Brianna Black asked, looking at the door expectantly. "It's been so long since last saw you two together."

Emma sighed heavily. She has been informed about Brianna's state of health, but still, Alexander befig called her husband. was a bit too much for Emma to hold in.

She tried to change the conversation, smiling wholeheartedly at Brianna "Mother, why don't we talk about the past 3 years?"

But Brianna kept talking about Emma and Alexander's past relationship. A relationship that Alexander himself destroyed without a second thought.

Memories Emma had fought hard to bury resurfaced, filling her with an ache that was as raw as the day she'd signed those divorce papers. She remembered the night she had waited for he, the dinner she'd prepared in his favorite way, and how everything had come crashing down when he handed her the dorce papers

Emma turned and saw Vivian, her stance arrogant as she leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, glaring at her. Her eyes were sharp, almost predatory, as they drilled into Emma.

Emma's grip tightened around Emily's hand. She couldn't afford to entertain Vivian's wrath, not with her daughter right there. "Let me take my daughter to the car first, and then we can talk," she said, trying to maintain her composure

Vivian rolled her eyes in disgust at Emily but didn't say anything She lazily followed Emma out of the hospital and waited a couple of meters away from the car.

"How dare you come back here after cheating on my brother? Vivian spat with venom.

"I didn't come back for your brother. He's the last person on my mind. I'm here for my daughter, and I kept my identity hidden for a reason. If your brother hadn't pried into my life, I would've remained anonymous until we could leave peacefully"

Vivian didn't believe any of Emma's words. She has had so much about Emma I'm the past through Annie and she knew that Emma's life right now was nothing to right home about. She believes Emma was a nobody who only come back here to begged for his brother's favour and she promised to make sire none of Emma's plans succeed this time around.

"I don't know what is going on with you and Alexander right now, but let me warn you now; if you hurteven a single strand of my mother's hair, I will not forgive you. Since you were raised by your father only, I know you have little to no idea of how important mothers are to us that were lucky to have, but I will not sit still if you use my mother in your crazy ploy look, Vivian threatened.

"Mrs. Black has always been kind to me, and I would never hurt her. Maybe it's time you realize not everyone is like you, Vivian. Some of us actually care about other people. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a child to look after."

Without waiting for Vivian's reply, Emma turned and walked away, her mind racing with the pain of the past and the challenges still ahead.
