Emma growled into Alexander's mouth as chaos brewed inside her. Her eyes were shut, yet she felt them-overwhelming, as a fire began to roar just beneath her skin. There were emotions she'd laid to rest a very lo to go near-and now they rose to the front once more,

insistently raw.

time ago, promised never again

Her body betrayed her as she moved closer, threading her fingers through his hair in desperation she didn't know she still possessed. She hadn't thought she missed him this much. Hadn't allowed herself to admit just how deeply his presence had marked her. All her auger, her heartbreak, her boundaries melted away in the heat of the moment. The taste of him, the scent of him, the press of his body against hers was an intoxication, a drug'she hadn't known she still craved.

But then, sharp and insistent, her telephone pierced the air from her purse. The shrill sound cut through the misty veil of passion to strike her like a slap across the face. Emma stiffened, her eyes snapping open as reality came thundering down. What was she doing? She jerked back abruptly, pushing Alexahder away from her with force. Her chest heaved as she fought for breath, her gaze locking onto his look of stunned surprise. Anger and shame welled up inside of her, pushing aside the hot desire that had filled her just moments before.

"How dare you?" she hissed, her voice trembling in anger and betrayal.

Alexander reached out, his lips parted as to explain, but Emma didn't give him the chance. Her hand shot out, and the sharp. crack of her slap echoed in the hallways. His face turned to his side from the result of the impact, his stare unreadable, hand lightly touching his cheek.

"You don't get to do this," she spat, wiping her mouth furiously as if trying to erase the remnants of his kiss. "You don't get to just walk back in and ruin everything all over again."

Her eyes gleamed glassy, and for a moment, beneath her anger, the ache threatened to consume her. Not waiting for his response, she whirled on her heel and stormed away, leaving only echoes of her heels on the floor.

"Emma" Alexander called after her, his voice breaking.

But she didn't stop. She didn't look back. Her heart was pounding too loudly in her ears, drowning out his words. She shoved the door open and stepped back into the bar where Jaden sat, waiting for her. Tears threatened to spill as she reached her seat, her hands trembling slightly

She hated him. Or so she kept telling herself. But it was hard to keep that rhetoric going when her lips tingled at the mere thought of his, when her body had responded to him with such wanton eagerness. A part of her still wanted him, and that realization only made the fire of her anger burn hotter..

She let her weight drop, drawing a deep breath into her lungs in one swift movement, willing herself to steady. She refused 10 let Alexander break through the careful walls of herself. She wouldn't let him roll back all her hard-won improvement.

Jaden could sense the sudden shift within her. His gut filled with apprehension. "You okay?"

"Can we go?" She asked as her gaze fell on Alexander who majestically walked out of the restroom and headed to his seat that Emma hadn't taken note of until then.

"Of course" Jaden replied, immediately rising to his feet. He could see she wasn't comfortable, and wondered if the alcohol was the reason. He started blaming himself.

As they

exited

the bar, her phone rang again but she paid it no led, tlinging one last look at Alexander.

Alexander Black had been her greatest weakness. If she was notatchful, he could ruin her all over again. AMAM

Alexander sat stiffly at the bar table, his mind far away from the inane drivel of the businessman opposite him. His jaw clenched, and his fists wrapped tightly under the table as he watched Emma walk out of the bar, Jaden at her side. The image seared itself into his brain like a branding iron, each step she took away from him increasing the ache in his chest.

He had seen her the instant she entered, and his breath caught in his throat. It was as if time, for that fraction of a second, stood still. Emma. The woman who has filled his mind, yet whom he had attempted to forget and could not do without Her presence drew him further into his torture, like a gravitational pul

His eyes, from the corner of his seat, had followed her every move. She had sat poised, yet so on edge, her manner guarded yet fragile. Then he had watched as she downed two glasses of alcohol in quick succession. It unsettled him. He knew Emma -knew her tolerance for alcohol was almost non-existent. He had seen it firsthand during their tumultuous courtship. He could still remember the night she'd drunk too much, the anger and pain spilling out of her in slurred words when she'd discovered his affair with Annie.

Now, watching her drink with such intensity, he could feel her frustration and pain radiating from across the room. It killed him that he couldn't reach her, couldn't soothe the storm brewing within her.

When Emma finally rose from the table and made her way to the restroom, he didn't think twice. This was his chance, a passing moment to close the unbearable distance between them. His body moved before his mind could catch up, following her like a shadow.

He stepped into her path as she came out of the restroom, his hand catching her arm firmly yet gently. She gasped and took a backward step, eyes wide in recognition. "Alexander- she started, but he didn't let her continue.

All the words he'd wanted to say, all the feelings he'd kept bottled up, surged to the surface in one reckless act. He pulled her closer, his other hand cupping her face as his lips crashed down onto hers.
