Sweet Subterfuge novel by Trina Duo -
Chapter 342
Violet panicked.
Larissa was the second woman Kevan had proactively wanted to marry. If she let her go, Violet had no idea how many years she would have to wait for her next daughter-in-law. Most importantly, Violet really liked Larissa after having spent time with her during this period, and she really treated her as if she was her own biological daughter.
"Marriage is not a game." Violet's face darkened as well. "I can understand your anger, but this is ultimately Lari and Kevan's life, and they should be the ones to discuss and solve this matter."
"Discuss?" Yvette laughed coldly, her gaze at Larissa holding love that never existed before. "There is such a huge gap between Lari and Kevan in terms of social status. To marry into your family, won't she jus be bullied and pushed around by your people? I don't believe that Kevan would really want to discuss and solve the matter with Lari!"
If this was under normal circumstances, Larissa would have lost her temper and thrown their words back in their faces. But she needed to use the Seymours right now to achieve her goal, so she pretended to protest weakly. "It's not like that, Aunt Yvette ..."
Yvette shut her down unhappily. "Shush!" She exhaled, probably realizing that her tone was too aggressive, and some kindness appeared on her face. "Don't worry, Lari, I will support you. Just speak of any grievances you have suffered at the hands of the Rogers family!"
Larissa replied, "Aunt Yvette, I really haven't suffered any grievances at all ..."
The way she looked right now, to Yvette and Lana, really seemed as if she had suffered with the Rogers family. On the other hand, to Violet, she did not dare to speak with confidence due to Yvette's tyranny. Violet tightened her grip on Larissa's hand slightly before saying seriously to Yvette, "I can assure you upon my own dignity that none of us had ever looked down upon Lari, and we would never bully her either If you really want an explanation, I can call Kevan to come over and give his promise to Lari before you."
"No need," Yvette said, "Anyone can act. Even if he promises before us, it doesn't prove that he would not bully Lari behind our backs."
"Kevan isn't the kind of person you think he is ..." Larissa interrupted in a small voice.
Yvette glared at her, and she hunched over, looking down as if she knew she should obey her "aunt".
"Mrs. Seymour." Violet could not bear it any longer and said, "Lari has already forgiven Kevan. Why do you have to force them to divorce?" Yvette did not answer her question, but turned to Larissa and said earnestly, "Lari, you can't just look at a man's money when marrying."
The hidden meaning in her words was quite obvious-Larissa married Kevan for his money.
Violet frowned but said nothing.
Larissa was likewise calm. She was even somewhat eager to hear what Yvette would say next.
"You weren't like this before. You weren't the kind to accept less than ideal solutions when you have been mistreated." Yvette sighed, expressing her supposed pity for Larissa's great "change". "As Nana said, you're acting completely different from when your former husband cheated on you. Lari, you must know that even if you lie to yourself this time and forgive Kevan, this matter will always be a thorn in your heart And no amount of money will make it disappear. From this day on, you will not live happily ever after."
Larissa was well aware of Yvette's astounding skills in defaming someone indirectly. She did not know if Lana also inherited her mother's genes, or if she picked it up later from her mother, for she utilized this skill perfectly too.
"Yeah, Larissa." Lana echoed Yvette's sentiments. "A twenty-million-dollar dowry can buy many things, but it cannot buy true love."
Violet was still unaware of the twenty-million-dollar dowry. Now that Lana had suddenly exposed this, Larissa was a little nervous. She had not touched the money in order to return it to Kevan after the divorce. She was only afraid of how Violet would see her now, that she would really think of her as a shallow gold digger and look at her with disgust.
