The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 83

Alexander’s POV…

“Shouldn’t you be prepared for work now?” Edwina asked me.

I sat in my wheelchair, staring out into space. I felt numb. She walked up to me, kneeling in front of me.

“You seem exhausted, did I do too much?” She teased with a twinkle in her eye.

She was definitely pulling my legs. We had s*x all through the night, and as distracting as the s*x was, it didn’t suffice for the situation the pack was in. We needed to fortify our security and be ready for war.

I haven’t heard from Caleb yet; it’s been days since I ordered him to make arrangements for the prisoners to train, and yet, there has been no single report from him since after.

I sighed, putting the escaped strand of hair behind her ear. “You worry your pretty head too much.”

Her eyes were so distracting I wanted to get lost in them and forget about everything, but I knew better than to lose focus. Checking my phone, I noticed Caleb had dropped me a message saying he was outside the door. I wonder why he sent a text instead of calling.

“I am leaving now. Bye.” I kissed her quickly on the lips. I felt like I should have asked first. Even though we had been having s*x for a while, there was still no actual discussion of what was going on between us.

My trust issues mounted every day as I found myself falling hopelessly for her; she made my heart beat rapidly whenever I saw her. Doubting my feelings comes easily whenever I remind myself of the situation with Sonia. I had done everything in my power to be a good husband and lover, but still, she laid it on me. Also, Edwina had told me how she was only performing the act as if it was her duty. I feel really hurt hearing her say so. I wanted to talk about it so bad, but I knew It wasn’t the right time to discuss such a trivial matter in the face of war.

She nodded her goodbye while opening the door for me. Caleb stood rigidly by the door.

“Something stuck up your a*s?” I said in a low tone to keep the other wolves from hearing their alpha throw jabs.

Caleb, with his annoying ability to give off zero reaction to whatever doesn’t sound pleasant to him, ignored me.

I nodded my head, “something is definitely stuck in your a*s.”

Easing him the stress of getting me into the car, I practically did the lifting myself. He went to the car booth to put the wheelchair in.

“How do you make jokes in this critical condition we are in?” He finally retorted

I couldn’t resist the chuckle that escaped my lips, “can’t you take a little bit of a joke?” I taunted.

“News coming from the wolves I sent outside the pack is that we are still under threat.” Caleb had a distant look on his face.

“Isn’t that an obvious situation?”

“The sizzlers are so relaxed with the thought of conquering our pack.”

I frowned, “so, what then are you insinuating?”

He inhaled deeply, “how about you just let go of your pretence and stand up to do something!”

I had never seen him so frustrated. Realizing how loud he’d let out his voice, he quickly apologized.

“I’m sorry, Alpha, I’m just sincerely tired of the situation. Everyone keeps saying….” He got a hold of himself as he looked away.

I furrowed my brows, “everyone keeps saying what?”

“Don’t mind me, sir. I just had an unconscious outburst.”

“Spit it out!” I barked with my wolf growling along.

“A lot of the pack members have turned their backs, the keppa clan most especially are spreading a whole lot of rumors which implies they might move out of the pack and join the sizzlers soon.”

“It’s a matter of choice.”

“Its your duty to protect the pack and keep it from breaking.”

“I am trying to find a way out.”

“Doesn’t look like it to me.” He insisted, slapping his palm on the steering wheel

We both kept quiet for some minutes, each of us lost in our own thoughts. “How about the prisoners I asked you to select?” I questioned

“They are ready now, it’s why I called you out. Since you intended to keep it a secret, I don’t want anyone eavesdropping on our conversation.”

“Thanks for that. I need you to get trusted men from the Omega clan. We still need to scrutinize them thoroughly to ensure we only work with those who are really our allies. The Gammas have promised to help, but that would only be after the prisoners have been well trained. With the help of your men and the warriors, we should get them ready in a few weeks’ time.”

He finally let out a little smile, “I’m sorry.”

I shrugged, “don’t be. You only did what you had to; you are my beta, and looking out for the pack is just as paramount to you as it is to me.”

“I would take care of finding the chameleons amongst the new warriors.”

“Where did you keep them?”

“They are secluded in the underground training below the prison yard.

“How many of them?”

“About 500 of them.”

I tilted my head, trying to run a quick calculation, “not bad. It isn’t about the number but their strength. Have you handled their feeding?”

“Yes, I had Becca secretly take care of that for me.”

“Have they all been informed of the clause behind their release?” I realized that I was beginning to ask too many questions, but I just needed to let Caleb know I was not so clueless after all. Petty? I know.

“Yes they have been informed, alpha.”

“Get me Carlos and Jason. I need to see them.”

“Right now?”

“No, when we return home. Our meetings would be done in my study. There is a need for entire scrutiny.

“Do you think involving Jason at this point will do?”

“I need to know from start if they are truly intending to help.”

“As your lordship pleases.”

Kicking the car into ignition, Caleb drove off into the busy road. My mind kept roaming in circles. Aside from Caleb, Edwina, and I, who knew my intention with the prisoners, I do not intend to let out too much information. Since not all of them can be trusted, there is a need for me to watch what I do. Ben won’t be taking anything away from me, not my woman and definitely not my pack.
