Ronald halted in his tracks, confusion written all over his face.
Kari couldn't help but find his rare moment of vulnerability endearing.
"Take a seat, Ronald."
He sat down, a mix of emotions swirling within him.
Kari took a deep breath, her eyes shimmering with sincerity. "Ronald, I know you've got feelings for me. I couldn't accept them before because I always saw you as a brother..." Ronald was well aware of this, feeling a pang of defeat. He had hoped, after all these months, that Kari had developed even the slightest bit of fondness for him.
Especially during the recent weeks when he was burnt out and hospitalized, Kari had been tirelessly by his side.
"Kari..."
"But I've given it some thought recently," Kari interrupted, covering his hand with hers, her gaze bright and hopeful.
Ronald froze, unaccustomed to such intimacy with Kari.
Fearful of rejection, he had never dared to overstep his boundaries.
Yet, here was Kari, taking the initiative to hold his hand.
"Ronald, maybe we could give it a try," she said, locking eyes with him. Her heart raced uncontrollably as she spoke, "I was actually planning to tell you this after my trip to Craneville." Ronald clutched her hand tightly, his hunger forgotten. "Have you eaten?"
Kari couldn't help but laugh at the question.
Of course, she hadn't. She had barely started her meal.
Breathless, Ronald urged, "Come with me for a moment."
They left the diner in haste, making their way back to their apartment.
Once inside, Ronald guided her to the couch and knelt before her, his dark eyes ablaze with passion. "Do you really mean it? You're willing to give us a chance?"
Kari, moved by his intensity, nodded, "Yes."
Over the year, Ronald had proven his feelings through his actions. Whether it was staying by her side during late-night work sessions or comforting her through the crisis with Brittany, he was always there. At twenty-eight, Kari was ready for a new chapter.
Ronald's eyes welled up at her affirmation, catching Kari off guard. "You... don't cry... I... I..."
Why was he crying?
Holding her hand tightly, his voice rough with emotion, Ronald made her promise. "Kari, think it over. There's no turning back with me."
Kari realized the depth of his feelings, gently stroking his hair. "Ronald, I won't back out."
Feeling relieved, Ronald embraced her, whispering, "You said it, Kari. You can't leave me now..."
Tears welled up in Kari's eyes too. "I promise."
It took Ronald a while to calm down. He then ordered some food for Kari.
"I'll be in the bathroom," he said, as Kari began to eat.
After a while, Kari, full and sleepy, dozed off on the couch.
She was gently awakened by Ronald's careful embrace. His cheeks were flushed. "I didn't want you to catch a cold, so I thought I'd bring you to bed." Kari mumbled her thanks, resting comfortably in his arms. "You've worked hard."
