It seemed, indeed, that Alaric had truly fallen for Hertha. Otherwise, a charmer like Alaric would never waste his time on a married woman.

Yet, it was a classic case of the right person at the wrong time.

Gripping the steering wheel tightly, Alaric floored the accelerator, speeding along the asphalt road. With the convertible top down, the wind swept his hair back, but it did nothing to cool his fevered mind. He knew Hertha was married to Spencer, yet he couldn't help worrying about her. He feared she wasn't resting enough after her concussion and might suffer long-term effects. Wanting to reassure himself of her well-being, he used the excuse of dropping off a gift to see her, though he knew she already had someone caring for her.

It wasn't his place to worry, but he couldn't control the urge to see her.

The situation remained unchanged. Spencer had gone shopping and made Hertha some delicious food. They were truly living together, leading a simple yet blissful life. And he was just an outsider.

Alaric was painfully aware of the reality, yet he couldn't bear the thought of cutting ties with Hertha. Letting go of someone, he realized, was such a torturous ordeal. Returning home, Alaric found Angelina sitting in the living room, waiting for him.

"You were supposed to have dinner with the Reed family today. Where did you run off to?" Angelina's sharp gaze fixed on Alaric as he walked in, her tone full of reproach.

Alaric didn't want to engage, heading straight for the stairs.

Infuriated, Angelina stood up swiftly and blocked his way, her voice tinged with anger. "Is this how you treat your mother? Did you not hear me?"

Alaric looked at her leisurely, delivering a nonchalant retort. "You're more like Georgia's mother."

With that, he attempted to walk away, but Angelina grabbed his ear, exclaiming, "You're rebelling against me, aren't you?"

In the past, Angelina had often twisted Alaric's ear without resistance, but his time, he angrily pushed her hand away. His face hardened with rage as he said, "I've told you before, it's either you call off the engagement with the Reed family, or I'm no longer your son! Since you refuse to break it off with the Reeds, from now on, I'm not your son, Angelina! You can't control me!"

Angelina, shocked and betrayed, widened her eyes. "What did you say, you ungrateful child! If you don't want to be my son, I might as well beat you to death and let you be reborn!" Seizing a broom from nearby, she struck Alaric's back forcefully.

Alaric stood tall, not trying to block the blows. Though painful, he endured them, biting down hard. The physical pain was nothing compared to the intense agony of his heart.

As he left Gulfstream Community that day, he knew he could never see Hertha again; they were never meant to be. The pain of forever losing her weighed heavily on him, profound and unyielding.
