The Blood Moon Twins -
Chapter 65
REMY
I kept my arms wrapped around Blade tightly from behind him. His eyes were still shut, and his mind was with Ginger, but I could feel his fear as if it was my own. Something deep within him was stirring awake, and his body was shaking. I couldn't just sit back and
watch, and I quickly found myself wrapped around him without even thinking.
I didn't know what was going on inside of his head, but I knew it wasn't good. Or maybe it was. Maybe he was finding the answers they were searching for, even if they weren't the answers he wanted.
"Remy, maybe you should take a step back," my mom said, standing up.
Blade's body was starting to glow, and maybe this should have concerned me, but it didn't. I ignored my mom and just kept holding him, hoping my presence could give Blade some sort of peace, like he had given me.
The air was tense, and no one else dared to speak as we waited for Ginger and Blade to finish their excavation of his mind. Blade's body tensed up, and I could feel his heart racing against my own. Then he jolted forward, gasping for air.
"I'm here," I whispered in his ear, not caring who watched this little exchange.
His chest heaved up and down, and he gripped my arms to steady himself. Something splashed on my arm, and even though I couldn't see his face, I knew he was crying. I buried my face in his neck, trying not to let my own heart break as I felt the pain radiating from him.
Ginger reached forward and touched Blade's leg. "You did well, Blade."
Blade stood up, pulling away from me. "I need some fresh air." He started moving out of the room with determination.
"Do we need to detain him, Ginger?" my dad asked.
"No, let him have a moment," Ginger said. "What he was forced to see wasn't easy on him, but I don't sense any evil in him." She took a deep breath. "He had a darker past than I had even realized, but one thing's for sure. He is the Son of Blood and Magic."
My chest tightened at the confirmation. Part of me knew it was him. I could just feel it when I looked at him, but hearing it confirmed was a different story. I knew Ginger said to let him have a moment, but I couldn't leave him alone, especially knowing that whatever he saw was so intense that it made him cry. He had hardly shown emotions around me, but this was another level. I started walking out of the room to find Blade.
Before I left, I heard my father give an order for someone to follow me, but I didn't care. I didn't need to be alone. I just needed to be with Blade.
I followed his familiar scent of mint and raspberry to the backyard. It was still light outside, so there were children from the pack playing outside still. I didn't see Blade, so I continued following his scent into the forest surrounding the pack house. I heard several sets of footsteps following me, and I knew there were at least three warriors assigned to follow me, which made sense after all of the attacks. I just ignored them and continued hunting for Blade.
I finally found him pacing back and forth several yards away from the edge of the forest and the backyard of the pack house. His fists were clenching and unclenching as he walked at a staggering speed. I stopped and watched him for a moment, suddenly worried he would be mad at me for following him.
I didn't know what to say, especially because I didn't know what he saw. Whatever it was confirmed that he was born of blood and magic, but it also shook Blade to the core.
He stopped moving when he sensed my presence. He looked up at me and ran his fingers through his hair. His eyes were no longer wet with tears, but his entire body was so tense that I could see a slight shake to it even from this distance.
"I shouldn't have come here," Blade said, holding my gaze. "It was a mistake. Because of me, I put you into more danger. I was selfish. You deserve someone better than me."
My throat tightened. I wasn't expecting him to say that. "You weren't selfish for staying. We were destined to be together. Even if vampires don't have mates, I can feel the mate bond. I know we were meant to be together. You weren't being selfish." My voice was strained as I spoke. I didn't know what was going on in his head, but I had this looming fear that he was ready to leave.
"I was destined for destruction. My entire birth was for the sole purpose of creating this horrible power." Blade held my gaze as he spoke. Something was different about him.
"So was I," I whispered. I hated saying it out loud, but it was true. If I was part of this prophecy, my existence was destined to be something terrible.
"You don't understand. It was different for me." Blade finally broke eye contact with me, and I could tell I was losing him.
"You're right. I don't understand. What did you see? Help me understand." I was pleading now. I had a sinking feeling that if I didn't get through to him now, Blade would leave, and I would lose him forever.
"My father made my mother have me, because he wanted to create the Son of Blood and Magic in order to fulfill the prophecy. She was a sorcerer, and he was a vampire. He was so obsessed with trying to gain the power the prophecy predicted that he created me. Then, once I was born, he killed my mother. He never cared about her or me. I was just a pawn in his game." Blade's voice was filled with venom, and I was sure if someone crossed Blade right now, he would take out his pain on them.
I took a step towards him. "Blade-"
"Don't come any closer," he said, putting his hand up. "I can't do this. I can't risk being with you, because I can't let that prophecy come true. If I do, I will be honoring my father's wishes and dishonoring my mother. We can't be together."
I felt like I couldn't breathe as I listened to him give up on us. "There has to be something we can do. I can't give up on us because of some stupid prophecy. I won't let some old words dictate my life."
"I can't risk it," Blade said. His eyes were far away as he looked anywhere but into my eyes.
"So you are just going to give up on us?" I couldn't accept it. I wouldn't accept it. I had wanted to find my mate for as long as I could remember, because I wanted a love like the love my parents had for each other. I saw how happy those who had found their mates were, and I wanted it for myself. Now I had finally found my mate, but he was ready to give up on us. I refused to accept it.
"Remy, don't you understand how serious this is? If we get together, we could cause the destruction of the world. This is so much bigger than us!" Blade's voice boomed throughout the forest, making me flinch.
"I understand how serious this is," I snapped. "But I'm not about to give up on us. There has to be a way to break the prophecy. A prophecy is just a prediction someone made a long time ago. It's not set in stone. We can change our future."
"What future? I was born in darkness," Blade snapped back. "I was born with a dark future. I never had a chance." He had cracked, and I didn't blame him. He found out his mother was killed after she served her purpose. Blade had never had a chance for a real family, and I wasn't sure if he had ever experienced love either.
He was still radiating anger as I looked at him. I should have been afraid of him at that moment. He was fuming and ready to attack anyone who came close to him. I could feel his rage boiling over, and I didn't know what he would do if I tried to approach him. But I wasn't afraid. My heart reached out to him, and I just wanted to comfort him.
I was worried if I tried walking up to him, he would only run, so I took a deep breath and imagined shifting to Blade. I had never successfully shifted when I had intended to before, but I also didn't have much magic previously. As I let the air out of my lungs, I could feel the world twisting around me. By the time I had finished my breath, I was standing in front of Blade. I threw my arms around his waist and held him tightly. I never wanted to let him go.
I could feel the movement of the werewolves who had followed us, and I knew they were ready to step in if Blade tried to hurt me. Surely they felt the same rage I had, and they were worried he would hurt me, but I knew he wouldn't.
Blade was still tense as I clung to him, but that didn't stop me. "I can't lose you. I haven't had a chance to love you yet. I don't care what kind of odds we have. I won't stop fighting for you, so don't give up, either, okay? I don't care how you came into this world, because I know you were made for me, and we can choose the kind of future we have together. So, please don't leave me."
Blade finally melted and wrapped his arms around me. His forehead fell to my shoulder, and he squeezed me so tight that it was hard to breathe.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," he muttered into me.
I ran my fingers through his hair and just held him close. The more I found out about him, the more I just wanted to stay by his side and do what I could to make him happy. Nobody deserved to go through what he had, and I had just scratched the surface. "Just don't leave me," I whispered, trying not to cry.
"I won't. I promise."
