Chapter 65 Snatching Candy
As expected, Sophia finally snagged the necklace.
Michael shot Sophia a puzzled look, not getting why she was so set on it. Sure, the sapphire necklace was stunning, but it didn't really suit a young girl.
Turning to Emily, Michael asked, "Do you want it?"
Emily sighed, "I do. But it's too late now, right?"
Indeed, Emily did want it, but she had her eyes on the "Lucky" hairpin even more.
She could only watch as the sapphire necklace ended up in Sophia's hands, silently vowing that one day she'd get it all back.
Michael stayed quiet as the third auction item was brought out. Sophia noticed a bunch of Isabella's designs being auctioned off and wondered if Isabella would be happy or pissed if she were awake.
Out of nowhere, Emily felt a bit down. She glanced at the charity auction catalog and saw that the "Lucky" hairpin was the third-to-last item. There were still tons of items to go, and she didn't want to sit through Isabella's works being auctioned off one by one.
Emily suddenly felt a bit suffocated and queasy. The constant sound of the auctioneer's gavel made her chest feel tight.
Clutching her chest, Emily said, "Michael, I don't feel well. I'm gonna step outside for some air and hit the restroom."
Michael felt it too, feeling nauseous and uneasy. He said, "I'll come with you."
Before Emily could protest, he stood up and pulled her along. They headed to the restrooms, each going to their side. Emily felt nauseous but couldn't throw up.
Michael was in the same boat, looking pale and with a dark expression, unsure how long this nausea would last-or rather, how long it would torment Emily.
When Emily came out of the restroom, Abigail was waiting for her. Seeing her, Abigail immediately handed her some water. "Take a sip. I knew it, the baby's acting up again, huh?"
Abigail then pulled out a sour candy from her bag. "Here, have one to ease it."
"How do you have this?" Emily asked, surprised, eagerly taking it since she'd been craving something sour.
"I brought it just for you. I knew the baby would be a handful," Abigail said with a smile.
Emily nodded gratefully.
"Who's being a handful?" Michael chimed in from behind them.
Abigail and Emily froze, their bodies stiffening. Emily turned back awkwardly, unsure how much Michael had heard. She felt her blood run cold.
Abigail was sweating bullets. "No one. I was talking about my little niece," Abigail explained nervously, and Emily nodded frantically.
Michael, having just thrown up, was in a foul mood. He suddenly noticed the candy in Emily's hand and stared at it.
Seeing Michael eyeing her candy, Emily tentatively raised her hand. "Do you want it?"
"Thanks," Michael said, snatching the candy from her before she could eat it, and walked away briskly.
Emily and Abigail exchanged glances, and Abigail suddenly burst into laughter. "I just realized Mr. Smith has such a childish side, even snatching your candy." Emily shook her head with a helpless smile. She really couldn't figure Michael out anymore.
On their way back, Emily sighed, "I feel so useless. I can't even protect my mom's work."
Seeing her sad expression, Abigail felt down too. She said consolingly, "Emily, it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself for everything."
Emily muttered, "I'm too weak. If I had power like Michael, I could do anything I wanted."
Abigail patted Emily's shoulder comfortingly. "I know you don't want to ask Michael for help, but we really have no other option."
"He likes Sophia. Maybe he is fooling me again. I don't want to humiliate myself, Abigail," Emily said, reluctant to go back to the hall.
Michael, feeling irritable and nauseous again, knew Emily must be feeling unwell too. 'Hadn't she just thrown up?' he thought.
He opened his palm, revealing the candy he had snatched from Emily. He wanted to eat it but didn't know why he hadn't.
Seeing that Emily hadn't returned, he felt inexplicably frustrated and decided to get some fresh air. Without saying anything to Sophia, he got up and left.
Sophia watched Michael leave calmly, but couldn't hide her resentful gaze.
She knew Michael must be going to find Emily again. But that was fine. She had switched Michael's wine glass with her own, which she had drugged earlier, ensuring no man could resist it.
When Emily and Abigail returned, they ran into Michael who was coming out. Michael's face looked bad for a moment. "Where did you go?"
Emily frowned and said, "Didn't you see me in the restroom?" Then she pulled Abigail into the hall.
Michael watched her back, feeling inexplicably frustrated. Emily really couldn't go a day without annoying him. Even though she wasn't feeling well, she insisted on toughing it out. Michael shook his head and followed her. "If you're not feeling well, I'll take you home," Michael said, unusually considerate after sitting down.
Emily shook her head and said lightly, "I am fine. Does your promise still hold? I have something I want now. Will you buy it for me?"
Michael finally smiled a bit and said, "Sure."
Then Emily asked, "Did you buy anything for Sophia while I was out?"
Michael wanted to tap Emily's forehead but held back in public, gritting his teeth. "Emily, do you really think I'm someone who goes back on his word?"
Emily snorted. "Who knows?"
They both snorted and stopped talking. Sophia watched them bicker, her grip tightening until her nails dug into her flesh without feeling the pain.
She pushed the wine glass towards Michael. "Michael, you haven't had anything to drink all night. Is there anything you want? I can get it for you."
Sophia hinted, and Michael really picked up the wine glass and took a sip. "I don't want anything. But why did you buy so much jewelry tonight? Didn't you say you didn't like them?" Michael asked casually. Sophia smiled and said, "I just thought they were valuable collectibles. It's not like that I have to wear them in public."
