Chapter 19 - Militia Attacks

Lucian POV

I am interrogating the man that killed my brother and he just admitted that the knife that he threw wasn't meant to kill Ambrose but was meant to kill me. He's laughing like some kind of sick hyena. I punched him in his face again. "So, you're an assassin. Who paid you? Who sent you?" I ask, trying to be calm and not kill the man before we've received information from him.

"If I tell you I'm a dead man. The man that hired me will find me and kill me. He has eyes everywhere." The assassin replies.

"If you don't tell us you're a dead man. So, who do you trust to keep you alive longer? If you tell me I'll release you and you can live in the capital or work here in the castle as a servant. That's not a bad offer. Your choice." I raise my hands up as if I'm weighing options in them.

"Fine. I'll take your deal King Lucian. King Rufus of Cait from the south. Evidently you disrespected him in a jousting match and he believes that he can out best Prince Cyprian, the general of the southern army and then invade the empire. However, he needs to have you dead so that the capital is in an uproar and unstable." The assassin explains the plot to overthrow the throne and take over the empire.

As soon as he's done talking I walk closer to him and pull his head back by yanking on his hair revealing his throat. Then I take my knife out of my belt, amidst his pleas for his life, and I slice his throat deep enough to kill him.

I walk slowly up to my room to get out of these clothes. Blood has splattered all over my shirt. I thought I would have found more closure in beating the assassin up and then ending his life but I feel numb to the core and a cold chill to the bone.

As I walk into my room I see Viola taking a bath in the washroom. She's able to get up and walk around now without getting dizzy spells; which I'm so grateful for. There was a time when I was so worried about her health. Even when I wasn't speaking to her I would ask for regular updates from the royal doctor. I've always made sure that she received the best of care. I asked Agenta to make sure that she takes things slow and to take regular breaks to sit down and have tea. I know I've been really cold towards her and even sometimes downright mean. I've avoided talking to her, being in her presence, and even sleeping with her. But even when I went to another room to sleep I've never cheated on her. There's been nights where I've stood outside of our room and I've debated on going inside and holding her to tell her I still love her but then my stubborn pride gets in the way and I walk off to one of the other rooms.

She definitely has a lovely body. Looking at her I am reminded of her innocence even though she has seen death in battle there is still so much she hasn't seen. Her innocence warms my body instantly. Since losing Ambrose I've been thinking more about the people in my life and how much I want to keep them closer. I've been shunning Viola because I felt that she kept a double standard when she judged me versus what she had done. But maybe it's time to let that go. Maybe it's time to let the past stay in the past. After all, I still love her. I can't deny that. I slowly walk over to her. My head says not to but my heart compels my feet to keep moving. When I'm standing directly behind her and I kneel down behind her so I can kiss her on the back of the neck.

"Oh! Lucian, you scared me half to death. I didn't know you were back there." She says out of surprise.

I don't respond. Instead I just start making butterfly kisses from her ear down to her collarbone just how she likes me to do. I take off my clothes and I slip into the tub behind her.

Viola POV

I'm completely stunned by Lucian's sudden outburst of affection. He's spent months giving me the cold shoulder, refusing to talk, and going out of his way to avoid me. It's been really hurtful at times but I've lived through it knowing that he was right in what he said. There was a difference in what he did compared to what I did. He was attacked by another woman and I was a willing participant when I kissed back. I eventually found a maid that was near the library when Marji threw herself at Lucian and she said that Lucian pushed her off of him and then slapped her across her face! Evidently she left the castle crying. My worst suspicions were confirmed. I had treated Lucian so unfairly when what I had done was, in fact, so much worse.

I had almost given up hope that Lucian would ever again give me affection. Then today, out of the blue, he starts kissing my neck and then gets in the bathtub with me. Now he starts washing my hair. Once he gets all lathered up he uses the pitcher of water to rinse it out. Then he washes my back. Now he asks me to turn around and he starts washing my legs, my arms, abdomen, and finally my breasts. He spends a lot of time washing my breasts. I giggle at how much time he spends washing, pinching, and scrubbing my breasts clean. Then he steps out of the tub and helps me out too and wraps me in a large towel. He leads me to sit down on the bed. He sits down first then I sit down in between his legs with my back to him and he starts combing my hair. I've never felt so cherished before in all of my life. After he is done Lucian picks me up in his arms and then lays me down on the bed.

"Baby I'm sorry how I've been treating you lately. It hasn't been right. I want to be here for you now if you'll accept me back." Lucian says as bends over me.

"Oh Lucian, I want you back too! I've been miserable without you. I'm so glad that you came back to me. I love you!" My heart is overwhelmed with emotion and I start crying. But Lucian wipes my tears away and then kisses my cheeks. For a few minutes we just stare lovingly into each other's eyes. I have my husband, my Lucian, back finally.

"I have missed the way you taste. I have missed drinking your juices from your cup. I have missed feeling myself inside your cave." Lucian eyes me seductively.

Lucian begins kissing me from my earlobe down to my collarbone. Then he finds my breasts and he plants little butterfly kisses all over them before he begins to suck on my nipples as he massages each breast. I begin moaning as he kisses and massages each of my breasts. Then he kisses me down to my abdomen and then to my inner thighs.

Someone knocks on our bedroom door. "Who could that be at this late hour?" Lucian says confused. Lucian makes sure that I am covered up before allowing them to enter. "Come in and state your business."

A young messenger runs into our bedroom. "Sire, militia gangs have sprouted up in the capital and are attacking the people. They are stealing from the merchants, overturning tables, and killing anyone that tries to stop them. Please, your people need your help and the imperial guard desperately!"

"I'll gather the imperial guard and be at the capital as soon as I possibly can." Lucian says, leaping out of bed.

Lucian POV

I find my brothers Cyprian, Wolf, and Quentin and fill them in on the news. Thankfully they are all still at the castle because of Ambrose's funeral. So together we gather the imperial guard and then we set off for the capital. I let everyone know that we need to keep at least a few of the militia men, preferably ones that are leaders, alive for interrogation. I want to know who is truly behind these attacks even though I am already pretty sure it is King Rufus of Cait. It is always best to know who our enemies are.
