The Failed Rejection -
Chapter 14
The next month passed relatively quietly and quickly. Penelope spent most of her time reading. Penelope wasn’t going to miss out on the down time to catch up on the advanced reading list. Penelope also posted the reading list on social media. She isn’t sure how many people saw it. There were a few people who reached out seemingly grateful.
The only time she went out was to eat, and pick up groceries. Even though the dorm mini fridge couldn’t hold much.
Penelope found a nice park to shift at. It was out of town so she had to Uber there and back. The park was outdated and the swings and playhouses were rusted. It was perfect, that meant it was deserted, no humans and no security. She tried to go there and shift as often as she could. Cause she didn’t know what her schedule would be like when the semester started.
Penelope surprisingly enough wasn’t hired on at the hospital as an EMT. They told her to go through one of the contractors all the hospitals use. Penelope said no thanks she wasn’t that desperate and walked away. Penelope probably shouldn’t have said that, but Penelope had worked with one of those companies before and they left a bad taste in her mouth.
She had to quit because they kept over scheduling her. That didn’t bother her on the summer or winter break. She could use the money and save it for later.
But she couldn’t work twelve hour shifts every day and go to school full time. She checked regularly for positions that could benefit her, but so far nothing.
If the money Jackson gave her dwindled too much, she would have to take the CNA certification and apply. Penelope wouldn’t worry about it now. Despite what most people thought about her, she wasn’t a diva. She livdd quite frugally, her only real expense is her books and things for school. Penelope also didn’t have a vehicle out here, so any money she spent on public transportation. Penelope also had a small savings, but it wasn’t more than a couple thousand dollars.
Penelope and Noah’s emails that were originally coming in such rapid frequency started to fade. Penelope was getting emails from Noah every day or every other day. Now she was getting an email every Sunday. Like clockwork.
Penelope didn’t know what Noah was going through, and she didn’t pretend to know. Penelope only knew what she felt, and that was loneliness.
It wasn’t just because she was away from her mate. She missed her pack, her family, her sister. It was a bone deep loneliness that only a wolf can feel when she is away from her pack. Penelope doesn’t know how to fill the void.
This is the first time in her life she didn’t immediately fit right into to a place. For the first time in her life she truly understood how her sister had felt most of her life. Penelope never could understand why people didn’t like Liliana, she was an amazing person. Maybe she was a bit too blunt, but it was better than being a liar.
Noah pov
Life for Noah had become very stressful and tiring. The bombings had started up again. Noah was in the operating room for up to sixteen and twenty hours at a time. If not more. Noah thought working in the ER in New York during his residency was tiring. That was nothing compared to what he was doing now. Noah barely sleeps, or has time to sleep.
Noah hadn’t been able to let out his wolf since he got here. His wolf was feeling the strain. Noah needed to get out and let his wolf out. If he didn’t let out Niko he didn’t know what would happen. Niko was already heartbroken from being away from his mate. There is always the possibility of going feral, being away from a pack and a mate. This is what rogue wolf’s deal with every day.
Noah didn’t know how rogue and lone wolf’s stay sane. Noah finally got a day off, the first one in several months of being here. Noah had asked one of the local nurses if there was a park or Forrest nearby. Noah was able to pick up some of the language since he had been here.
The park was an hour walk, he wasn’t able to drive given that the hospital really only had ambulance type vehicles.
Noah walked from the park into the wooded area. He took off his clothes. The tale tell signs of the shift came on him. The cracking of bones were painful. His shift hadn’t been painful since he was eighteen years old.
Noah let Niko run in his wolf form for as long as he wanted. Noah didn’t know the next time he’d be able to take the time to come and shift. The time may not be the only issue, the park may be blown to smithereens tomorrow. Niko is a predator and is always on the look out for threats. However, the bombs can be sent from over a mile away.
Niko ran free for hours before deciding it was time to head back. The sun was starting to set, and Noah still had a long walk ahead of him. Noah was thirsty and hungry. Normally in wolf form you can hunt and drink from the stream. However, Corona had been bombed for the past several months. The wild life was gone from this area, and the water either had to be boiled or taken from a bottle.
Noah thought about what to say in his weekly email to Penelope. Noah stopped emailing Penelope simply because it hurt so much. The longer he was away from her the more he aches for her. Every email he reads is like a knife to the heart. Noah and Penelope had been separated before. Noah doesn’t know if it’s because of the distance or because they had started the mating process.
But after every email Noah either reads or sends his wolf Niko will whine and cry in his head for hours if not days afterwards. Penelope had been emailing him either every day or every other day. However, once she realized that Noah only emails on Sunday. Penelope stopped sending emails multiples as well. Penelope will respond to his email sometime throughout the week, and doesn’t send him anything else.
Noah finds himself wishing that she still sends him the emails like she used to. She would send him pictures, meme’s basically anything that made her think of him. But fair is fair. He closed himself off, so she only reciprocated. Noah got back to the hospital, took a shower, and then checked his email. Looks like this one is short.
Noah,
I’m sorry to hear that you lost a patient the other day. But I’m sure you did everything possible. You are an amazing doctor and surgeon.
There’s not much new to report here, still no job openings at the local hospital. I’m considering getting my CNA certificate. But as always that’s up in the air. I’ve mainly been reading the books on the reading list from the orientation. It’s odd having so much down time.
Anyway stay safe.
Penelope
Niko whined at the short email. There was nothing else in the email either. No picture, or meme to brighten up his day. Noah quickly and shortly replied back to her. Then he checked his other emails. He emailed his mom and brother. Noah decided to catch up on some sleep while he had the chance.
