Penelope pov

Penelope sat in the waiting room until the morning sun rays came out over the horizon. It was a very long night. She was able to do some school work, but not much Penelope was just too worried. When the doctor finally came out Penelope shot up like a spring.

“Are you the one who brought in the John Doe?” Penelope was shocked the hospital wasn’t able to find out who he was. Penelope nodded,

“Yes is he okay?” The doctor let out a heavy sigh,

“He’s stable now. In a coma, honestly I don’t know how he is alive. The condition he was brought in, he should have been DOA.” The doctor looked at her, “That means-“

“I’m an EMT and a med student, I know what it means.” The doctor was shocked,

“Maybe your the reason he’s alive.”

“No it’s cause he’s an alpha,” Koko said in her head.

“Where are you studying?”

“Perlemen, it’s my first semester.” The doctor smiled at her,

“Hang in there it gets easier,” the doctor tried continuing to talk about med school but Lili went back to the patient.

“Anything else about the patient?” Lili asked.

“Nothing I can share with you,” the doctor said shortly.

“You weren’t able to find out his name?” Penelope asked.

“No, there was no identification on him, so he’s just a John Doe for now. Maybe we can get something later,” the doctor said. Penelope asked a final question.

“Can I see him?” The doctor thought about it for a moment,

“Well, normally it’s against laws, but since he’s a John Doe I’ll allow it. Some one else talking to him couldn’t hurt.” Penelope walked back and sat with the unknown man for a few more hours. She tried to see if she could see any identical features about him. However, there was nothing that set him apart. His face was bruised pretty severely so Penelope couldn’t get a clear look at him. She could tell he had blond hair, and a beard. But that could easily changed so that didn’t mean anything.

She walked to the nurses station and asked if she could be put down as the John Doe’s emergency contact. The nurse told her she would have to clear it with the hospital, but took her number anyway.

Penelope went home and got caught up on her studying. It was Sunday and she had a lot to make up for. However, the man in the hospital wasn’t far from her mind. Penelope was checking her emails from her professors when she saw she still had one or two from Noah unopened. Koko was silent in her mind, and she opened up the email. Penelope was confused and hurt as she read the email.

To my dearest Penelope

I am sorry that I have pulled away from you the last few months. But our separation has caused my wolf to cry for you. It hurt too much. I am so sorry that I pulled away.

I have been doing such amazing work here. Probably the best I will do in my career. However, I still don’t know if I made the best decision for our relationship. I miss and think of you every day. Even when I sent those short and impersonal emails I wanted to tell you how much I love and miss you. Because I think about you every day. I think of our only night together.

I pray to the moon goddess you are happy, and that there will be a swift conclusion to this war, and that I can come home to you.

Love Noah.

Penelope read the email, and the next one wondering why she wasn’t responding. Penelope couldn’t fight the anger growing inside of her. “It hurt too much.” That’s why he pulled away? Why he treated her like a stranger? Penelope knew he was going through a lot, but damn it so was she! Penelope lost her father, had a crazy human come after her. Her mate knew none of this because he pulled away from her.

Penelope couldn’t even ask her wolf for her advice because she had been strangely silent since the werebear had shown up. Penelope let out a sigh, and sent Noah a short email. Deciding for the time being to keep her distance. Noah pulled away first, he couldn’t blame her for keeping it. Penelope didn’t think she could handle if he changed his mind again and pulled away. Noah has been running hot and cold since she met him. Penelope decided she had enough for the day, and went to bed.

It wasn’t until the next morning when Penelope remembered that she knew a werebear by association. Penelope pulled out her phone and gave Killian a call. After three rings he picked up the phone.

“Hey Penelope is everything okay?”

“Hey Killian, yeah everything is fine. I was just hoping to get a number from you?” Penelope heard some shuffling around, and Penelope knew he was at his desk.

“Yeah what number do you need?”

“The number of that werebear that saved Liliana the time she was kidnapped, do you have it?”

“Yeah, I’ll text it to you. Why do you need it?” Killian asked her with curiosity in his voice.

“I found a werebear almost dead in the woods the other day, no identification. I thought he could help.”

“Okay, I’ll send it to you, just be careful ok? Werebears are powerful and territorial.” Killian warned her.

“I will, I just want to find his family. Bye Killian, keep Lili and my nieces and nephews safe.”

“Will do,” Killian said and then hung up. Killian never was one for phone etiquette. Penelope heard through the grapevine that Liliana was expecting again and she was very happy for her. Penelope just hoped that it didn’t interfere with them coming out and visiting her. Penelope soon got a text from Killian.

Lili also wanted me to ask when was a good time within the next two months for a visit.

Me: okay I will! Very excited to see you. Thank you for the number.

Penelope needed to hurry up and call the werebear as she had class soon. Penelope wrote down the number on a scratch piece of paper and the quickly typed it in on her phone. She hit dial, and then after a few rings the person picked up.

“Hello alpha Axel who is this?” The deep rumble voice called. Penelope vaguely remembered the bear shifter, but she was too invested trying to save her sister.

“Hello, my name is Penelope. I don’t think you remember me but I’m-“

“Luna Liliana’s sister and Callum’s favorite aunt.” Penelope laughed,

“I’m his only aunt,” Penelope pointed out.

“Yes I remember you, how can I help you?”

“Well I’m calling you because I’m living in Philly at the moment and last night I came across an almost dead werebear.”

“Where is he?” Axel asked, laughing completely gone from his voice.

“He’s in a coma. He had no identification on him, so there’s no information that I have to go on. I’m also not from the area so I don’t know where the closest pack is. But I remembered you and thought-“

“That I might. Smart girl, yes I know the packs in the area. Can you send me a picture of him?” Axel asked.

“I can, but he was beaten pretty badly. He was in surgery for about twelve hours. It’s a miracle he survived.”

“Your a doctor right? If I remember you paddled your sister.”

“Yes I did, that was a terrifying day. No I’m not a doctor yet, I’m attending medical school, I applied some first aid until the ambulance arrived.”

“Thank the moon goddess. I’ll call around and see if anyone is missing a pack member.”

“Okay, I’ll stop by after my classes and snap a picture. But like I said his face was beaten badly. His healing will most likely focused on the more severe injuries.”

“That’s fine, I’ll go ahead and take it, anything else you can tell me about him?”

“He’s close to seven foot, but that’s not atypical for a bear shifter. Over three hundred pounds, it was hard to get him out of the woods.” Alpha Axel laughed,

“I bet, go ahead.”

“He’s tall, blonde hair, a short beard. That’s all I could really tell.”

“Tattoos?” Axel asked. Tribal tattoos were important in the bearshifters community. They generally determined their status.

“I honestly didn’t see any, it was dark and he was covered in b***d. I will go back tonight and look.” Penelope looked at the clock on the wall.

“I have to go to class, just text me any more questions you have. Thanks for your help!”

“Thank you!” Axel said and Penelope hung up.

Penelope quickly changed her clothes, picked up her books, and ran out the door.
