The Human In The Wolf Pack -
Chapter 39
You would think that Rider and I would spend the last few hours before the battle together, but unfortunately, we did not have that luxury. We were leaders. We couldn’t focus on ourselves, or our only selfish desires, because we were responsible for the lives of those who put their faith in us. Instead, it wasn’t until we were waiting on the battlefield, a deadly silence ringing through the field.
It was now late October. The wind was chilly as it blew past us. Hundreds of werewolves, hundreds of Gifted, we stood awaiting the enemy we knew would come at any moment. I could feel my heartbeat in my finger tips, and a soft numbness had set in my mind.I felt oddly focused, and I no longer felt that anxiety I had before. I searched the field, looking for a moment before my eyes settled on my mate. He wasn’t too far away, and in his wolf form. I could tell it was him though, even if his appearance had changed, our souls recognized each other.
If you don’t come out of this in one piece, I’ll kill you. I spoke to him telepathically.
I’ll see you at home. He promised, a hint of amusement in his eyes.
I nodded, before I turned away, concentrating. My mind was scanning the pack grounds. It was like looking at a radar, but with much more detail. As the radius of which I could see increased, I waited. I could see where May and Will were hiding, waiting for me to tell them where to go. I could sense where Theo’s team was, coated in invisibility. I could see the safe room where the kids were hiding. The sun was getting lower and lower in the sky, and that’s when I saw it. A large number of intruders entering the territory on the south-western side.
May, Will, they’re coming from the South East. It looks like the Demons are taking up the front. Move swiftly, and be careful.
I knew they could not reply, but I was sure they heard me. I turned to the awaiting army in the field, the tension in the air thick enough to cut. I took in a deep breath before speaking.
“They have entered the territory towards the south east. Prepare yourself.”
I decided to reach into Will’s consciousness, to see how things were going for them. Suddenly, I was seeing things through his eyes. May and him were jumping through the trees swiftly, moving to the area I had told them about. I could see the forest rushing by as they made haste, before the stopped abruptly. Will’s eyes turned to May, who put a finger to her lips and pointed to something in the distance.
He saw it then. It was a horde of something ungodly. Some were skeletons oozing a dark, thick smoke, others were like shadows with substance. A few were something worse, like something out of a horror film. A body like a chimera, a mix match of random parts, and dead looking eyes peering out as they progressed. Their movements were jerky, like a puppet on strings. I could feel Will’s disgust. I could smell the stink of them, like sulfur and rot. I almost gagged. May suddenly lifted her hand, and the horde halted, staring at something, an illusion, May had created. We had discussed either a wall of fire, or a sudden sinkhole they wouldn’t be able to cross.
Will didn’t waste any time. He lifted his hand and I saw him lock onto his target. A small, bright blue ball began to grow in his palm before he threw it. He exploded like a large bomb, and the demons started stirring, as pieces of the chimera scattered across the forest floor. He threw another, chipping away at the horde as they backed away, retreating from the illusion. I was suddenly yanked out of Will’s consciousness and as I blinked, my mind returning to my body, I could feel myself be shaken. Tristan’s panicked face came into view, and behind him, demons were flying in the sky. They began their plummet, ready to dive in and attack.
I threw my hands up, panic quickly turning to adrenaline. They hit my force field, bouncing off or crushing themselves against its power. Some flew away, like giant, skeletal pterodactyls, while others had been killed by their own speed when they crashed into the dome-like barrier.
“They can’t get in, but the Gifted’s attacks can make it out, so hurry,” I cried out.
Tristan was quick, using Will’s combustion ability which he had copied, to throw bombs at the demons. Others quickly followed him, and I was surprised at how difficult they were to kill. I could feel a cold sweat start to go down my spine as I held up the barrier. I had never made one this large before. I was covering the entire expanse of the field, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold it up forever.
“Werewolves, be prepared. The barrier won’t be up for much longer,” I called out a warning, but before I could drop it, I saw a familiar head of deep, almost b***d red hair.
I felt my b***d run cold as Reviera appeared on the back of one of the demons, a giant grin in place as she landed, dismounting from its back. She stood on the other side of the barrier, on the forest floor. She had grown a lot from my memories, and I knew she wasn’t just a spiteful little girl anymore.
Her deep red locks curled around her like a living thing, the color vivacious, and as the wind blew, it looked like a flickering flame. Her eyes were as dark as coal, and her skin almost white. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about that, and I could see a hint of our mother in her, or atleast the woman who had given birth to me. Her figure was curvier than mine. She dripped seduction, and confidence, even in the midst of a battle. I could tell how even she, could tempt the devil. She wiggled her pale, elegant fingers my way, as if to catch my attention.
“Hello, little sister,” She called, a grin like that of a snake about to swallow a rat whole marking her face.
I narrowed my eyes at her.
“Reviera,” I said, not letting my guard down, and re enforcing the barrier just to be careful.
“It’s been so long, what? No hug for your favorite older sister?” She pouted, but her black eyes sparkled.
She was enjoying this. I wondered how long she had been waiting for this moment.
“What? So that you can stick a knife in my back?” I asked her, unamused.
“You know me so well. Well, they do say that no one knows you like family,” She said in a sing song voice as she shrugged her shoulders delicately.
A small smile tilted at my lips as I saw her eyes flicker to the flying demons, as they continued to crash against the barrier, or get shot down. No matter how resilient they were, they weren’t invincible apparently.
“More than you expected, right, Reviera? I bet that just makes your b***d boil. You always couldn’t stand the thought of your little sister being stronger than you. I’m sure you hate it that the elder’s were right. You would bring about evil, and I would be powerful enough to stop you.”
She snarled at me, her black eyes no longer amused, but then she calmed herself unexpectedly.
“Hate it? How could I? I’m just fulfilling the wishes of the dead. Those Elders wanted me to be the evil villain, so I killed them to show them how evil I could be,” Her smile was bloodthirsty, and I couldn’t help the wave of disgust she sent through me.
“You’re as pathetic as you were then. Still throwing tantrums to get what you want,” I told her sharply.
I saw her pale skin flush at this, rage pouring out of her as she screamed. It was a sound that pierced my ears, jagged and screeching. She banged her fists against the barrier and I winced, the impact causing the force field to shudder. I wouldn’t be able to hold it much longer. She grinned at my reaction, then lifted her fists again.
“Get ready!” I cried out.
And with one more hit, the barrier came crumbling down.
