The Hybrid’s Second Chance -
Chapter 71
Alexander's
POV
Julia was standing there, her small 5' 4" self, matched up with this large 6-foot doctor, accusing him of poisoning his own Alpha. It didn't seem that far-fetched to me, seeing how this pack was raised to think. Beth had just slapped this man across the face while he sneered that they were going to get away with what they did. lan was angry for Julia and her family, knowing how much she cared for him. Anger was bubbling up inside me, and it was threatening to take over. Then he pulled a g*n from inside one of his coat pockets. Julia started backing away and backed right into me. "This will be so easy to get away with," Dr. Andrews all but laughed.
"You're not getting away with anything," I breathed, half in my voice, half in lan's guttural voice. The doctor's eyes darted up to look at me.
"Elijah, Hannah! Get in here!"
"What's happening?"
"The doctor helped poison Marvin. They want him, Beth, and Sandra dead. Hurry, he has a g*n"
"Well, we're not letting that happen," Hannah said defiantly.
"How are you going to stop me?" he laughed. This was too much; lan took over, shoving me to the back of my mind. He didn't shift, but pushed Julia behind us, shielding her from the potential oncoming bullets. Dr. Andrews smiled an evil cocky type of smile, as he looked at all of us. Suddenly, Elijah and Hannah burst through the doors. This moment of distraction gave lan the chance to launch himself at Dr. Andrews. He collided with him hard, knocking him backwards and to the ground. The g*n flew from his hand across the room. lan stood up and turned to face him.
Dr. Andrews was already back on his feet scanning the room for his weapon. Spotting it under Marvin's bed, he lunged for it. Before he got to it, however, he froze in midair, a wild look on his face. Looking around for the cause, I saw Cornelia standing there with her arm outstretched and her eyes narrowed. Then, she threw him so hard into the wall, it left a large size dent. He crumpled to the floor, still frozen in time, his eyes wide open. She turned sharply towards the door, making a closing motion with her hands. The door banged closed, and we all heard the click of the lock. The shock of Cornelia stepping in allowed me to regain control and shove lan to the back of my mind.
"We have to get him out of here," Sandra said, looking at Marvin.
"We'll take him to our pack, they can help him," Julia told her. I looked at Beth, who seemed to be in a state of shock. I realized she had just found out her pack was trying to kill her mate, and even her from what Dr. Andrews said. That must have been unexpected and hard to take in.
"Julia," I said.
"What?" she responded, looking at me.
"Beth..." Julia looked at her and saw the shocked colorless expression on her face. She was staring at the frozen figure of Dr. Andrews in disbelief.
"Beth..." Julia said softly as she approached her. "Are you okay?" She looked at her with wide open eyes, tear tracks down her face.
"How could this happen? They're trying to kill him...."
"I know, but we're not going to let that happen. Cornelia will teleport us all to Crystal Sky and our doctor will take care of him. But we have to go right now."
"Okay, okay," she responded, seeming to come to her senses. Cornelia was already standing by Marvin's bedside holding one of his hands. Sandra held Cornelia's other hand, while Julia, Hannah, Elijah, and I all grabbed on to someone.
"What are we gonna do about him?" Elijah asked, indicating to the heap on the floor that was Dr. Andrews.
"Just leave him. Everyone he wants is leaving. After we save Marvin, we're done with October Moon. I want to get Naomi and her family out, but after that they're on their own," Julia said.
"Agreed, this is the last straw," I added.
"Get us home," Julia told Cornelia. With a pop, we were gone and now standing in the lobby of the hospital of Crystal Sky. I picked Marvin up in my arms and ran him down the hallway.
"Dr. Williams!" I shouted, knowing he could hear me without mind linking.
"Alpha!" he responded, poking his head from his office. His jaw dropped open when he saw the sight coming towards him. Me, running with an unconscious man in my arms, followed but Julia, Elijah, Hannah, Cornelia, and two people he didn't know. "What's happening?" he asked, following us into a room.
"This is Marvin, the Alpha of October Moon. It seems they tried to poison him with the intention of killing him." I laid Marvin on the bed and stepped away, so Dr. Williams could examine him.
"Do you know what he was positioned with?"
"The doctor of October Moon said silver and wolfsbane, but I don't know if he was being truthful."
"Jovie, Dawson! I need you in here now!" Two nurses came bustling into the room, going straight to Dr. Williams.
"We're going to need to do a full workup." He looked at all of us just standing there staring at him. "I suggest you all go to the waiting room. We'll do everything we can to help him. The seven of us walked somberly to the waiting area. Sandra had her arm around Beth as they walked, while Cornelia had her hand on her back. They were doing their very best to comfort her while she waited for news of her mate's fate. I couldn't sit and it seemed neither could Julia, who came over to me, followed by Elijah and Hannah. "What are we gonna do?" Julia whispered.
"I don't know," I told her. "What can we do?"
"Whoever did this needs to be punished," Hannah added.
"I know, but what are we gonna do? Declare war on a pack that didn't attack us? We can't march on them for trying to kill their own Alpha," I said.
"He tried to kill us, Alex, I think that gives us cause to attack!" Julia insisted.
"We don't know that; he could have just been aiming for Sandra and Beth. We just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Besides, there are innocent people in that pack. And what happens if we win? Then we put another Alpha in place only for them to kill him or her?" "Da*nit," Julia huffed, realizing I was right.
"I think what we have to do right now is focus on Marvin. We can figure the rest out later." We all took seats around Sandra, Beth, and Cornelia as we waited for news from Dr. Williams. About twenty minutes had passed when Dr. Williams came out through the double doors into the waiting room. All of us jumped to our feet and rushed towards him, Beth in the lead.
"How is he?" she asked.
"He's alive for now. What the other doctor told you wasn't untrue. He was poisoned with silver and wolfsbane and a lot more silver than wolfsbane. I think that's why he didn't smell it before he drank any. Silver is odorless, and with how long everything's been in his system, I don't know right now what the outcome will be."
"Dr. Williams, thank you for taking care of him," I said.
"You're welcome, Alpha." Dr. Williams looked directly at Beth now. "We're going to do everything we can to save him. We're flushing his system right now."
"Thank you," she breathed. Dr. Williams looked sympathetically at us before returning through the double doors. Beth collapsed back into her chair, burying her head in her hands.
"Isn't there something you can do?" I asked Cornelia.
"I wish I could, but healing is something I haven't mastered yet. And I don't know of any magical way to fix wolfsbane or silver poisoning." I looked at her exacerbated. "Trust me, if there was anything I could do, I would do it."
"I know, I'm sorry," I apologized. "I just hate that these things keep happening." Julia came up beside me, intertwining her fingers with mine. Her touch brought comfort to me and lan, who hadn't stopped pacing and growling since I took back control. "It sounds like all we can do is wait and pray to the Moon Goddess he pulls through." Jovie came back out through the double doors.
"Dr. Williams says you can go in and see him if you'd like." The seven of us followed her back and into Marvin's room. They had changed him into a hospital gown, and he was hooked up to many machines. The heart monitor was beeping, while the swishing sound of his breathing tube echoed eerily through the room. Beth walked up to his bedside and placed a kiss on his forehead. I stood back to let her, Julia, and Sandra have some space.
"What do we do if he doesn't wake up?" Elijah asked.
"I don't know. The law would dictate we don't get involved as this isn't our pack or even our own species. With Julia having ties to the pack and being a member, I don't know if that changes anything much." "Should we ask Elder Stanley about it?"
"Maybe. He would know better, I suppose. I would prefer not to bring them into this situation if I can avoid it though."
"That's true, they weren't exactly welcoming last time."
"I guess we should wait and see if Marvin wakes up first. If he does, he'll be the one to deal with everything. And if he doesn't, we'll cross the bridge when we come to it." We stood there, watching Marvin's monitors for a few minutes in silence. Beth had taken a seat in the chair Jovie had brought for her.
"Hannah, could you please go have them make up two guest rooms for Sandra and Beth?" I asked her quietly.
"Of course," she replied with a sad smile.
"I'll help you," Elijah said, following her from the room. I walked over behind Julia and wrapped my arms around her waist. She sighed as she relaxed into my embrace.
"Sandra, Beth," I addressed them. "You're both welcome to stay in the pack house tonight. We're having rooms prepared as we speak."
"Thank you," Beth said, looking from me to Marvin. "But I'm not leaving him."
"I'll have them bring in another bed for you so you can stay here with him," I told her. She smiled at me, as fresh tears fell from her eyes. "I'll stay here too," Sandra added.
"No, no," Beth protested. "You go stay in the pack house. I'll let you know if anything happens. You won't be that far away."
"Are you sure?" she asked with a questioning look.
"Yes, I'll be fine." She reached for Marvin's hand, squeezing it gently.
"We'll have some food brought for you too," Julia added. Just realizing now that it was dinner time, I quickly mind linked Devon, who was the head of the kitchen, to bring some food here for Beth. "Mom, do you want us to take you to where your room is going to be?" Julia asked. "Are you okay if I leave?" she asked Sandra.
"Sure, there's no point in all of us standing here worrying." Sandra gave Beth a hug as she sat in her chair before turning to us. Julia, Sandra, Cornelia, and I all walked from the hospital.
"I actually think I'm going to do some research in the library, see if I can't find a way to help him," Cornelia told us. Once we entered the pack house, Cornelia went to the library on the first floor, while the three of us headed to the second to show Sandra her room. We got her situated, and I made sure to tell Devon to bring her food to her room. Julia and I went to our room. Cooking for her seemed like a good idea after this stressful day, and I still hadn't heard anything about how it went with meeting her sisters. A few minutes to relax and forget about what was happening was what both of us needed.
