The Lycan King’s Second Chance Mate (Ashanti) -
Chapter 0285
KYLE'S POV.
"Baby, are you sure you'll be fine on your own? Rhea's not running away, you know. We can still go to see her tomorrow." I tell Tessa in a worried tone and she lets out a small sigh.
The moment Alpha Regan left for the hospital, I suggested that we postpone Rhea's visit to tomorrow so I could talk with the maid again today before the day was over. She refused and insisted that she could go to prison on her own until I had no choice but to let her go.
I'm regretting that choice right now. I should not have entertained the suggestion in the first place.
"Yes, we can..." She steps closer to me. "But there's no time. Going to see Rhea tomorrow means Ashanti has to spend another night in that cold, dark cell. It's not a good place to be in. The earlier we get this over with and have her released, the better."
And her words make sense as usual.
Postponing these meetings means more nights for Ashanti in the dungeon which is not a good thing.
"Alright then, you win. But you're not going unaccompanied. I'll send three guards with you to prison. I need you to promise me that you won't dismiss them on your way there." She chuckles lightly and pecks my cheeks.
"I won't. See you around." She waves me goodbye and proceeds to walk towards the car she's to leave in. I only get into my car once hers drives out of the premises and I hit the gas once I'm on the highway.
************************************************
The maid, whose name I know to be Lizzy, is sitting in the same spot as yesterday when I stepped into the interrogation room. Without saying a word, I walk over to the center of the room and sit across from her just like Alpha Reagan did yesterday. She looks a bit haggard but still has that serious look going on.
Alpha Reagan was right when he said she was going to be a hard nut to crack.
"Lizzy. That's the name, isn't it?" My voice cuts through the silence.
"It is." She answers dryly. Her voice is almost inaudible. Her coffee-brown hair is completely disheveled. Her servant uniform doesn't look as pristine as it did yesterday when she was brought in here. It's creased and the dryness of her lips indicates that she's having a rough time in that cell.
"So Lizzy, are you willing to tell the truth about what happened yesterday?"
"I already did so to Alpha Raegan." Her tone is quiet, but firm.
"Well... he said to tell you he doesn't believe your words and that I should press on until you tell the truth."
"There's no other truth to be told!" She cries out loud, and tears start shimmering in her eyes. She blows out a deep breath. "Ashanti paid me to get her the wolfsbane. She also paid to find a dress that would..."
I hold out my palm before her face, signaling her to stop talking and she stops.
After listening to the recording, Alpha Reagan transferred it to his cellphone and so did I. I take out my phone from my suit jacket and place it on the table. I press the play button on the screen and the next minutes go by with the two of us listening to the conversation between Nelly and Ashanti.
By the time the audio ends, all the colour has drained from Lizzy's face and she looks like she's about to evaporate in her seat.
"Now..." I pick up the phone, but before sliding it back into my pocket, I initiate a new recording session to record everything we'll discuss here. There are cameras at different corners of the room, capturing our interaction as well, but I want to have this one with me. "I'm sure you recognized Alina's voice in that audio recording," I say, with my eyes never leaving her face. "What you listened to is just a little piece of the evidence that proves Alina was the one who ordered that poison and Ashanti had nothing to do with it. Now, I don't know where you came from with your own theory about Ashanti paying you to get the wolfsbane, but when the time comes and it's proven that she did not send you on any such errand, you will be persecuted for false incrimination and defamation of character, not forgetting aiding and abetting the murder of an innocent foetus. You will be hanged alongside Alina once all these truths come to light. So, if you love your life, you'll speak the truth now and spare yourself the trouble!"
She bursts into tears.
"Aiding and abetting the murder of an innocent foetus?" She shakes her head violently, in denial. "I did no such thing."
"But you said Ashanti asked you to get her wolfsbane..."
"I didn't get wolfsbane for anyone!" She denies it firmly. "Not for Ashanti, not for Alina either. Alina simply gave it to me and told me to make sure Ashanti carried it with her into the room. She told me she'd cause a scene that would lead to people getting searched and that once that happens, I should tell everyone that Ashanti was the one who paid me to get the wolfsbane. I had no idea she was planning to poison herself."
"And why didn't you report to the Alpha?"
"Alina threatened to kill my sons. I don't know how, but she knows everything about them. Their names, the schools they attend, and their grade levels. Even their daily schedules, she recited them to me and made me understand she had men watching them every minute of the day, and one wrong from me would result in their deaths. I had no choice but to do as she commanded. And if she finds out that I just told you this, she'll kill them." She sniffles tears.
I've heard so many bad things about my sister and this doesn't even surprise me anymore.
She's now getting children involved in her wicked games. She's crazy.
I look at the crying woman seated in front of me and let out a heavy sigh of exasperation. I can't believe I'm pitying her right now.
"No harm will come to your sons. I will make sure of that. And if you keep your mouth shut, Alina won't know we've had this conversation and your children will be safe. Is that understood?" She nods her head in agreement.
"Understood. Her crying voice declares.
"Alpha Reagan will be pleased with you for saying the truth and when the time comes, you will be rewarded." I push my chair backward and rise to my feet. She is still sniffling tears and sobbing silently as I make my way out of the room.
The day keeps getting better and better.
