“Sweet girl, wake up,”

Damon’s warm and husky voice coaxed Violet out of her sleep. She stirred in the bed, under the sheets, refusing to open her eyes.

“Wake up, love,” Damon said again. “I want to show you something,”

Violet was intrigued. Slowly, she pried her eyes open, mumbling, “Mmhmm?”

“Hey,” Damon’s handsome face was the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes. It was impossible not to smile when he was looking at her with those dark piercing eyes.

“Hey,” she croaked. Her voice was still coarse since it was so early in the morning.

“Do you know what day it is?” he asked.

Violet thought for a second before replying, “It’s the fourth of July,”

“Which means?”

“It’s my nineteenth birthday,”

As it turned out, Violet’s birthday fell on the same day as the nation’s independence day. Some people might be annoyed having to spend their birthday on the same day as the national holiday, but not Violet. She didn’t mind seeing fireworks, eating barbecues, and having the whole nation celebrate the day with her.

“That’s right,” Damon smirked. “And you know what that means?”

“What?” she asked.

“It’s time for your present. I got a special surprise for you,”

“You do?”

Violet couldn’t contain her smile. She thought it was so sweet that Damon prepared a surprise for her. She never mentioned to him that it was her birthday today, but he probably knew about it from the file he had of her.

“Do you wanna see it?” Damon asked.

“Yes,” she nodded eagerly.

“Yes what?” he said, sounding half-serious and half-joking.

Oh, what a tease.

Violet bit her l*p to stop herself from smiling too much.

“Yes, master,” she purred.

“Good girl,” he smiled in satisfaction and lent out his hand. “Come on,”

Violet took his hand in a heartbeat. Damon then swiftly brought her up and helped her out of the bed.

“Close your eyes, baby,” he ordered, and Violet complied.

With her eyes closed, Damon led Violet out of the room. Though she couldn’t see anything, she could pretty much tell where they were going. They were walking into his study, and he led her deeper towards the playroom.

Hmm. I wonder what the surprise is?

Violet couldn’t see a thing, but she started to smell something. It smelled like roses and it was divine. Damon then stopped her tracks and made her stand in her place. He was standing right behind her and his hands were covering her eyes.

“Happy birthday my love,”

Damon dropped his hands down and Violet opened her eyes. She couldn’t help but gasp when she saw the spectacle before her. They were inside the playroom, but everything in that room was covered in rose petals, violet roses to be exact. There were also balloons, fairy lights, and candles everywhere. And right in the middle of the room where the bed was, white rose petals were placed neatly in the shape of a heart.

Oh, sweet baby Jesus. Happy birthday to me!

“Are you ready for your present?” Damon appeared in her periphery, in his hand was a pair of leather handcuffs.

Violet saw the look in his eyes and she knew what he meant. A smile crept up her lips as she surrendered her hands to her.

“Yes, sir,” she said.

Damon smirked and stared at her for a second longer. Her eagerness was fueling him. She couldn’t wait to get in those cuffs and let Damon have his way with her. Slowly and seductively, he began to put her wrists into the cuffs. Once he was done, he made sure that the cuffs were secured tightly, and then he brought her hands behind her head.

“This might hurt a little,” he said. “Or a lot,”

Violet looked up at him and swallowed hard. Damon was standing right in front of her, his face was only inches away. He licked his lips and stared at her lips. Violet felt the need to close the distance between them, so she pushed her face forward. She went as far as she could, and now she could only wait for him to come closer. Damon started to lean down, slowly and purposely, and as their lips were about to touch…

“Violet, wake up!!”

Talia’s loud and booming voice cut through the air. Violet’s eyes jolted open and she saw Talia hovering above her. She was absolutely stunned and confused for a moment, but then she realized that she was on her bed.

Crap. It was just a dream.

“Wake up, it’s time to go!” Talia yelled again.

“Huh?” she croaked. “What’s happening?”

“Come on, we have to get going!”

Talia didn’t explain anything. Instead, she pulled Violet out of the bed and into the closet. Violet was lost and confused. She wasn’t even sure that this wasn’t another dream. Meanwhile, Talia was throwing clothes at her, telling her to go get changed because they were late.

“Talia, what’s happening?” Violet asked.

But again, Talia didn’t explain. After Violet was dressed, Talia simply pulled her out of the house where a helicopter was waiting for them.

A helicopter!?

“There’s no time to explain, Damon’s already waiting, we need to hurry!” Talia yelled over the rotor’s noise and she pushed Violet into the chopper.

Violet tried asking questions, but her voice was drowned by the blade’s loud spinning noise. And before she knew it, the helicopter flew to the skies and took her away from the estate. Violet could only stare in disbelief as they went up higher and higher, and everything below her became smaller and smaller.

What on God’s green earth is happening?

Birthdays were never a big deal for Violet. After her father’s death, celebrating birthdays, or celebrating anything in general, wasn’t the same anymore. Besides, she was always busy working or studying. For the past five years, Violet spent her birthdays either working at the coffee shop or studying for exams. Sure, she would have dinner and a cake with her family, but that was about it.

This year, however, was different. She wasn’t with her family anymore. She was with Damon Van Zandt, the mafia king of the east coast. So yes, surprise helicopter rides were to be expected.

“Tal, where are we going?” Violet asked again for the millionth time. “And where’s Damon?”

Talia waved her hand carelessly and rolled her eyes, dismissing Violet’s anxiousness.

“Relax, he’s already there waiting for us,” she said.

“Where?” Violet pressed.

“You’ll see,” she said cryptically and on purpose.

Violet let out a sigh and threw her gaze out the window. Talia wasn’t going to ruin Damon’s surprise. Violet had no option but to sit there and wait. Minutes passed and Violet let her eyes wander aimlessly. But suddenly, down by the blue ocean and green grass below, Violet noticed something.

There was a tall lighthouse next to the sea. Right by the lighthouse was a sign written on the grass that read: HAPPY BIRTHDAY. And standing next to the sign was a man dressed in a sharp black suit. She couldn’t see his face because they were too far away, but Violet could tell who the man was from ten miles away.

It’s him.

Violet’s heart began to race as the helicopter slowly descended on the area. She couldn’t drop her smile even for a second. And once they fully landed, the door opened and revealed Damon standing right by it.

“Damon…” she gasped. Her heart was filled with warm gratitude and adoration for this man.

“Happy birthday, sweet girl,” he said with his arms open wide.

Violet didn’t waste another second. She jumped out of the helicopter and straight into his arms. She linked her arms around his body and pressed her face tightly into his chest.

“I… I can’t believe this!” she squealed. Everything from surprise to excitement to joy was overflowing from her tiny body.

“Do you like the surprise?” he asked her.

Violet pulled away slightly and nodded her head. Then she took another look around the area and she recognized where they were.

“Sandy Hook Lighthouse,” she said. “I used to come here with my dad when I was little. We’d go on walks and get ice cream at—,”

“At Moby’s. I know,” he said.

“How’d you know—wait, is that in the file?” she narrowed her eyes at him.

“No,” he replied. “You told me that. Remember?”

Violet thought for a moment and realized that she had told him this story before, months ago. They were talking about random things one night and Violet babbled about this place and how much she liked coming here with her dad. She was half asleep when she told the story, so she didn’t think he’d remember.

“Oh,” her mouth formed an ‘o’. “But still, I can’t believe you remember the story,”

“I remember everything you ever tell me,” he smiled. “I know this is a special place for you. Which is why I brought you here,”

Violet couldn’t believe that this wasn’t a dream. This looked like something straight out of a fairytale. Damon was no Prince Charming, but at this moment right now, he absolutely was.

“I love you, Damon,” she said, standing on her tippy toes.

“I love you, sweet girl,” he replied, leaning down to gently k**s her lips. “Now come on, I wanna show you something,”

“What? There’s more?” she gaped.

“Oh, yeah. There’s always more,” he smirked.

Violet stared at him in confusion as Damon took her hand and led her to the big black car parked nearby. Within seconds, the car pulled away and drove to the street behind the lighthouse. The car then stopped in front of a homey-looking cottage, or it might be a café because it had a sign outside, but the sign was blank.

“What is this place?” she asked.

“You’ll see,” he said as he opened the door and lent out his hand. “Come on,”

Violet took his hand and Damon led her inside. Violet was expecting to see either a bed and breakfast or some kind of café, but she wasn’t prepared to see this.

Inside the cottage was a small café. Everything from the furniture to the appliances looked brand new. And on the menu board were all of Violet’s coffee concoctions.

Oh… my… God!

“Damon, this is…?” Violet gaped and her hands went to cover her mouth.

“You said you want to open your own coffee shop someday,” he said nonchalantly. “Why not today?”

“Are you serious?” she stared at him in complete disbelief. “You got me an actual coffee shop for my birthday?”

“Everything is ready to go, all it needs is a name,” he shrugged.

Violet just kept staring at him, blinking several times. “What?” she asked again.

“I told you I wanna make all your dreams come true,” he said as he pulled her close. “So, dream on, baby girl, and watch me,”

Violet was absolutely stunned. She was speechless. There were no words to describe how happy she was or how lucky she felt.

“You’re a dream come true, Damon,” she sighed. “How did I ever get so lucky?”

“You? I’m the lucky one here. I get to wake up every day to the most beautiful girl in the world, drinking the most wonderful coffee,” he paused for a beat before adding, “Nothing beats that,”

Violet and Damon stared into each other’s eyes for a moment, both realizing that they were lucky to have each other. And then she noticed the espresso machine in the corner of her eye, it was the expensive kind too, the imported ones from Italy.

“Oh, can I try that?” she asked, her eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store.

“Of course, it’s yours,” he laughed.

Violet went to the counter and began working the machine. She hadn’t been in a coffee shop in a long time, she actually missed it.

“Would you like some coffee?” she asked.

“Yes, please,” he said, sitting down at the bar.

Damon watched in amusement as Violet geeked out over the coffee machine. Moments later, the coffee was ready and Violet served it in a cup for him. She looked mighty pleased with her creation, and Damon smiled when he inhaled the wonderful scent.

“Hmm, how much do I owe you for this?” he asked.

“That one’s on the house,” she said, pouring another cup for herself.

Smiling brightly, Damon lifted his cup and said, “Here’s a toast. To a new kind of life,” he paused for a moment before adding, “Our kind of life,”

Our kind of life… where we’ll be married and I’ll have my own coffee shop… and maybe someday we’ll have our own little family…

“Our kind of life,” Violet smiled and clinked her cup with his. “I can hardly wait,”
