Chapter 41

~ Violet -

*BANG!* BANG! * BANG! *

"Get down!" Liam yelled and pulled Violet down.

After being frozen for a moment, Violet finally gathered herself and found cover. She and Liam were hiding behind a tree and Beau and Adrian were hiding behind another tree across from them. Gunshots were raining down on them while Gianni and Benigni rained shots down at Hugo and his men.

Damon was in a tough spot. He was caught in the middle of the crossfire. Knowing he couldn't take all of Hugo's men by himself, he quickly stepped back and closed the metal door while he was being shot at. Luckily, none of the bullets got him and the metal door protected him. The door was strong, but it wouldn't be for too long. The bullets kept denting and clanging against it. One of the bullets even broke through the glass window. Damon ducked down for cover, thinking of ways to get back out there and attack. "We need to get to Damon," Violet said to Liam. "We have to cover him,"

Liam glanced at the metal door and nodded his head. Then he turned to Beau, gave him a hand signal, and Beau nodded back.

"Stay here, I'll go get him," Liam told Violet.

"I'll come with you," she interjected.

"No," Liam said firmly. "If anything happens to you, Damon's gonna kill me,"

"Go, now!" Beau yelled to Liam. "We'll cover you!"

Not wasting another second, with bullets flying in the air, Liam did a brave move and raced across the room. Adrian and Beau were firing their guns like crazy, covering for Liam. Hugo and his men were forced to move back, finding cover behind some pillars. Meanwhile, Violet was watching the whole thing like it was in slow motion. Liam reached the metal door and banged it before yelling, "Boss, we got you!"

Damon pulled the door back instantly and came out firing alongside Liam. Liam and Damon shared a quick look before slowly walking up. Beau, Adrian, and the rest of the guys moved towards them and they became a unit. They were attacking Hugo and his men from one side, while Gianni and Benigni attacked from the other side.

Hugo and his men didn't stand a chance against this army. Knowing that their victory was near, Damon turned his head to the side, finding Violet hiding behind a tree. Damon nodded to Adrian and he nodded back. Quickly and stealthily, he left his unit and went towards Violet. Violet saw him running over to her and her heart leaped in joy. Everything in the world seemed to have stopped moving. It didn't matter that a firefight was happening behind them, Violet and Damon only had their eyes for each other. Smiling as they came closer.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the garden, Hugo was cornered and desperate. His men were falling one by one and he could see his defeat coming. Hugo glared daggers at Damon in anger. One minute ago, he had the world in the palm of his hand, but all of a sudden, everything was taken away. All because of Damon.

"If we can't win this fight, just make sure we get him!" Hugo yelled angrily, pointing his gun at Damon.

In the corner of her eye, Violet saw Hugo and his men pointing their guns at Damon. Damon didn't see them because he was too busy running towards her.

*BANG!*

"No!" Violet screamed and her body jumped instinctively.

She ran as fast as she could, crashing into Damon, causing the both of them to fall to the ground. Violet's body landed on top of his, covering him. It took Damon a second before he realized what happened. He quickly turned their bodies around, pulled her to the side so they were covered by the tree, and he held her pale face in his arms.

"Violet?" Damon's voice sounded worried. "Sweet girl?"

The sound of the gunshot and Damon's voice were the last thing Violet heard. There were no more sounds after that. Damon was rocking her back forth, yelling and screaming, but Violet couldn't hear anything. There was only a loud ringing in her ear and she glanced down to find blood seeping out of her shirt, right around her stomach. Violet's eyes went blurry after that. She tried her best to focus on Damon, but the next thing she knew, everything went dark.

- Damon - "Violet, Violet!"

Damon's hand went to Violet's stomach, putting pressure on it, hoping to stop the bleeding. Violet's eyes were closed shut and her body felt cold. Damon felt a pit in his chest. His eyes welled with tears and his lungs felt heavy. "Violet, please! Don't close your eyes, baby!"

He tried rocking her body back and forth, but Violet wasn't responding. At this time, Adrian, Liam, and Beau retreated towards Damon. They all crouched behind the tree, circling around Violet.

"Shit!" Liam hissed, looking at Damon's bloody hands. He could barely keep the blood out.

"Use this!" Beau took off his suit and wrapped it around Violet's stomach. Damon's hands were shaking so much, he couldn't tighten the fabric around her. Beau had to do it.

"You have to get her out of here," Adrian said to Damon. "Gianni and Benigni have cars for us outside," he pointed to the mansion across from them.

"But how is he gonna get through Hugo and his men?" Beau asked.

In order to get to the other side, they had to cross Hugo's area. They could wait until Gianni and Benigni got rid of them, but that might take some time, and Violet didn't have any. "Don't worry, we got this," Liam replied as he cocked his gun, replacing the empty clip with one full of fresh bullets.

Damon stared into his friend's eyes and felt the utmost gratitude. His friends were going to cover for him, potentially sacrificing themselves to get him and Violet to the other side.

"Guys," he said, not knowing what to say.

Adrian just smiled and put a hand on his shoulder.

"We're going with you until the end,"

Damon and Adrian shared a knowing look. Then as if on cue, all of them started moving together. Damon carried Violet in his arms while Liam, Beau, and Adrian formed a semi-circle around him. They moved fast and in sync, shooting out bullets while dodging the ones that were coming.

*BANG!* BANG!* BANG!*

Damon could see the end approaching. They were so close to the mansion. Gianni, Benigni, and their men were also moving towards them, helping to put cover. *BANG! *

"Ahhh!" Hugo exclaimed a loud groan. His chest was hit.

Damon followed the direction of the bullet and saw Adrian's hand holding the gun. Adrian shot Hugo down. Once Hugo was down and exposed, more bullets came flying down. *BANG!* BANG!* BANG! *

Hugo received more than six shots before he fell to his knees. His men tried pulling him back, but it was no use. He was gone.

"F**k yes!" Liam roared in excitement. The guys exchanged a quick look of happiness, smiling from ear to ear, until suddenly- *BANG! *

One of Hugo's men shot Adrian straight in the head.

Damon froze in his place. Liam and Beau were also struck by lightning. Liam, however, was quick to regain his consciousness. He shot back three times at the guy who shot Adrian, killing him. *BANG!* BANG!* BANG! *

"Adrian!" Damon yelled as Adrian fell to the ground and Beau caught him. Blood was spilling out of his forehead and his face went cold.

"Damon, go!" Beau yelled back, pointing to the mansion.

"NOW!" Liam yelled too, pushing Damon away.

The guys knew if Damon had stayed another second, he would never leave. Violet didn't have much time, but at least there was a chance for her to survive. The same thing couldn't be said about Adrian.

Damon took one last look at his men before turning away. It was the most painful thing he ever had to do. His heart was breaking into a million pieces. The only reason why he was still able to stand was because of Violet in his arms, counting on him to save her life.

As soon as Damon made it to the front of the home, he got into the first car he saw and drove away. The sound of the gunshots was disappearing as he went further and further away. Slowly, he began to regain his hearing. He heard Violet's labored breathing, and he glanced at her to see blood soaking out of Beau's jacket.

"Damon..." she said through labored breaths.

"Yes, sweet girl, I'm right here," he shakily put a hand on her, while still trying to focus on the road.

"Da..."

"Ssh, don't speak, it's okay," he cooed. "You'll be alright, I promise,"

Damon's eyes were welling up with tears again. His voice cracked as he spoke. He couldn't bear looking at her like this, writhing in blood and pain. And not just that, he didn't even want to think about Adrian and his men back in Hugo's estate.

Luckily for him, after a short drive down the hill, he saw a small hospital with an ER sign. Using all the adrenaline in his body, Damon parked the car right outside the main entrance, ignoring everything and everyone else, he carried Violet into the lobby. Blood was dripping down her feet and everyone was staring in fear.

"Help! Please!" he shouted at all the nurses. "My wife's been shot!"

A doctor came out from behind a door and quickly went to Damon. Two nurses were pulling out a stretcher and they helped Damon put her down.

"We need to get her to the operating table, stat!" the doctor said to the nurses after quickly examining her.

"Damon..." Violet croaked again as she was coming in and out of consciousness.

The nurses, doctor, and Damon were all running down the hall, pushing Violet towards the operating room.

"Sweet girl, I'm right here," he said as he held her hand. "Don't worry, you're gonna be okay," "...The... ba...by..."

"What?"

At this time, the stretcher reached the end of the hallway and into the double doors leading to the surgery room. One of the nurses stopped Damon from coming in, putting a firm hand on his chest. "I'm sorry, sir, but you can't go in," she said.

"But-"

"Let us operate on your wife," she said quickly before closing the door shut.

Damon had no choice but to wait outside the door. He did everything he could, and now he was powerless. Only God knows what will happen behind this door. Suddenly, all the adrenaline left his body and felt nothing but weakness. Air escaped his lungs as Damon slumped against the wall and fell down to the floor. Tears were rolling down his face as he sobbed uncontrollably, his heart shattered into dust.

Please, God. Please... Let her be alright. Please.
