The Mafia’s Good Wife -
Chapter 57
- Violet -
"...So on that note, fellas, shall we have a drink?"
Violet was holding her breath as she stood next to the wall, her ear glued to a glass that she held on that wall. Next to her was Talia, who was just as curious. Talia also saw the people that came in this morning and she was the one who suggested they listened in. "What are they saying?" Talia whispered. "Nothing right now, they're drinking," Violet replied, giving the glass back to Talia.
Talia took the glass and pressed her own ear against it. Violet waited in anticipation, staring at Talia's expression. So far, she already heard about Damon's plan to unite them for support, his plan to run for the mayor's office, and about Dylan being his new consigliere. Those were all big news and Violet knew nothing about it. But yet Dylan was working with Damon all this time?
"Oh, they're talking again!" Talia quipped.
"What'd they say?" Violet pressed.
Talia put her finger to her lips, signaling for Violet to calm down. Then she went silent for a while, listening to the glass carefully. Violet couldn't do anything but wait. Her heart was pounding in her chest.
"Oh my God!" Talia gasped suddenly. Her eyes went wide like saucers. "Are they seriously gonna make Damon a city official?"
"I don't know, are they?" Violet asked back.
"I think they are!" Talia nodded vigorously. "They're talking strategies!"
Violet wasn't sure what to make of this news. Meanwhile, Talia's face looked even more serious than before as she kept her ear glued to the glass.
"Is that... a bad thing?" Violet asked.
Talia sighed and shook her head.
"No, it's not a bad thing, but... it's gonna change a lot of things around here for sure,"
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it, Vi," Talia said as she gave the glass back to her. "In a few years' time, you might just be the next mayor's wife. Say goodbye to the mafia world and say hello to politics,"
Violet froze for a moment. The reality finally hit her. If Damon succeeds in pulling this off, and he most likely will because he is Damon Van Zandt, their lives wouldn't be the same again. Leaving the mafia world was something she'd always wanted, but politics? That seemed like a scarier world. Especially in today's society. Everything will come to light. There's a lot of safety there, but there's also no privacy.
Violet looked up to see Talia's face and they only looked at each other, not saying a word. Even Talia knew how complicated this would be. As for Violet, she still didn't know what to think or feel. She felt nervous about the uncertainty, but she also felt somewhat safe knowing Damon's pulling the ropes.
Nothing is certain in this life except for one thing. Being Damon's wife... is never predictable, that's for sure.
~ Damon -
"Alright, we'll be in touch. Thanks again for coming," Damon shook Harrold O'Brien's hand as the two men parted ways. Dylan was standing next to him and he also nodded at Harrold goodbye.
The meeting started early this morning and it went on until sundown. Harrold was the last one to leave. The Irish man could really hold his whiskey. He single-handedly almost dried out Damon's liquor cabinet. That was no small feat. Damon was pleased with how the meeting turned out. No one pulled their guns out and shot each other. In fact, now that they had a common goal to put Damon in the government seat, everyone became friendly with each other.
Though the meeting went better than expected, Damon didn't want to stay there longer than he had to. He had another meeting waiting for him and he cared much more for that. So after sending Harold off at the driveway, Damon quickly rushed back in and headed for the playroom.
Stepping inside the playroom, Damon found Violet already waiting for him. She was wearing a dress and oversized cardigan, sitting in the middle of the room at the foot of the bed. A big smile spread across Damon's face as he strode towards her. "Hey, you," he said. "I've been thinking about you all day,"
After a long day like today, all he wanted was to hug her and feel her soft skin pressed against his body. It was soothing and relaxing. It felt like coming home after a long day's journey.
Damon let out a sigh as he buried his face into the crook of her neck. Her arms were wrapped around her body and she linked her hands around his neck. Damon took a deep breath and inhaled her intoxicating scent. He let out a muffled groan, feeling the heat in his body rising.
"Damon, wait," Violet said suddenly, putting her hands on his chest. "I need to talk to you,"
Damon pulled away slightly, studying her expression. Her face was serious.
"...Okay?" he said. "What is it?"
"Well, so... Talia and I were eavesdropping on your meeting earlier," she said with a sorry smile. "I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. I saw you and Dylan in the same room with all those people and I got curious,"
"Alright, so what'd you hear?" Damon shrugged simply. Of course, he wasn't mad. He was gonna tell her all about it anyway.
"Pretty much everything..." she admitted. "Are you really going to run for office?"
"That's the plan," Damon said with a winning smirk. "It's not a bad plan, to be honest. Props to your brother for coming up with that," "Dylan came up with that?"
"Yeah,"
"When?"
"How?"
"I don't know," he shrugged. "He just came into my office one night and we started talking. I told him about the things that we're facing and I have this idea to ask for help from other families in the area. Dylan then came up with the idea of uniting everyone under one banner. Me,"
Violet tilted her head to the side, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Well... why didn't you tell me about all this?" she asked.
"We weren't sure how these people were gonna take it. If they're not on board, we'll have to find another strategy. I didn't wanna worry you with anything that's not set in stone,"
"But it's set in stone now?" she pressed. "Are they on board?"
Damon nodded his head eagerly.
"One hundred percent,"
"So it's really happening?"
"Well, phase one is eliminating Celina and Benzino. Running for office is phase two. And in the meantime, I need to keep my hands clean from trouble,"
Damon was smiling proudly, but Violet looked at him somewhat hesitantly.
"What's that look?" he asked, tilting her chin up with his hand.
"What look?" she asked back.
"You look worried about me,"
"I just... Are you sure it's a good idea working with all these people?"
Damon gave her a reassuring look.
"It's the best way out there. Trust me. Our businesses are legitimate and I'm gonna be... a man of the people," he said, pausing for a beat before adding, "Maybe someone that our kid can be proud of,"
Damon glanced down at her stomach and Violet glanced down too. Being almost six months pregnant, the baby bump was definitely visible. Damon felt a lump in his throat every time he remembered there was a life forming in there. It made him so excited, his heart felt like bursting out of his chest.
"He's proud of you already, I'm sure," Violet said as she glanced back up at him.
Damon's lips curved into a smile again.
"And are you proud of me?"
Violet's lips spread into a smile too.
"Always,"
Damon couldn't contain the happiness in his heart. It was overflowing everywhere. Not wasting another second, he wrapped her face with his hands and pulled her in for a kiss, basking in the euphoria.
--- ONE WEEK LATER -----
Ever since the meeting, life became crazier and crazier in the Van Zandt household. Dylan and Damon were working nonstop to make sure his businesses became legal in the eyes of the government, gathering up documents and tying up loose ends. Meanwhile, Liam and Beau were working with the other families to figure out Celina and Benzino's whereabouts. Last they checked, Celina had arrived in New York City. They were also trying to gather more armies because they heard Damon was gathering support from these various families. Word got out that almost three hundred men were at Damon's disposal now. Celina and Benzino decided to lay low and halt their plan to attack. This meant that the ball is in Damon's court now. If he could find out where they're hiding and wipe them out, the threat is neutralized.
With everything that was going on, Damon was feeling on top of the world. Everything was moving smoothly according to plan, which means he could focus on what really mattered. Violet.
Damon was preparing something special for his soon-to-be wife. Amidst his busy schedule, he still found time to prepare for this surprise. No one knew about the surprise except Dylan and Talia. And he made them swear to secrecy that they wouldn't let it slip. "Are you sure you got it? And you're sure it's the same one?" Damon said into the phone. Talia was on the other line. He was standing alone in the garden, making sure no one was listening.
"Of course, I'm sure," Talia replied. "I was there, remember?"
"Alright, alright. Thank you,"
Damon turned off the call and looked from side to side again. He was sending Talia out on a special mission and he didn't want Violet to suspect anything. Speaking of Violet, Damon realized he hadn't seen her around today. He was working all through dinner, and when he finally came out of the office, everyone had retired to their bedrooms.
Damon went upstairs to check, but Violet wasn't in the room. He figured she might be in the library or the kitchen, working on a new recipe, but she wasn't there either. Damon started asking around, but even the maids didn't know where she went after dinner. Damon started to feel anxious. He didn't like not knowing where she was. He was racing up and down the stairs, calling after her, but there was no response. And then suddenly, he remembered one more place he forgot to check.
Damon went into his office again and pulled the secret door open. As soon as the door was pushed back, Damon saw Violet in the middle of the room, right on the bed. She was wearing nothing but a pair of lace underwear, and she was holding the riding crop in her hand. "Welcome back, master," she said seductively. "I've been waiting for you,"
Damon almost had a heart attack right then and there. His eyes trailed the curves of her body as she sat up straighter. She was gliding the riding crop up her thigh and she stopped as the crop reached her lower stomach. Damon swallowed hard. "Holy shit," he muttered.
His eyes couldn't look away. Violet started using the crop to rub herself. Damon felt his body tensing up. His member was coming to life.
"I got started without you," she said again. "I'm sorry, I can't help myself,"
Damon's lips twitched into a smirk and he started moving closer. With every step he took, his heart was beating faster and harder. Only Violet could make him feel this giddy and hungry all at once.
"Well, I see you've been bad for such a good girl," he said as he stood in front of the bed, leaning down slowly until their faces were inches apart.
"It seems that I've forgotten my manners," she looked up and batted her eyes at him, smiling seductively. "I might need you to teach me some things,"
Damon couldn't stop the grin forming on his face. Violet was now giggling. She was just too much. Like a lion pouncing on its prey, Damon leaped and tackled her down, covering her with his body. "Don't mind if I do!"
