The Mafia’s Good Wife -
Chapter 59
--- ONE WEEK LATER ----
~ Damon -
"Alright, weekly meeting. Bring it in, boys,"
Damon sat back at his desk with his hands behind his head while Liam, Beau, and Dylan stood in the middle of the office. It was late in the day and Damon was having his usual weekly meeting. After this meeting was over, he'd be done for the week and free to indulge in some quality time with his soon-to-be wife.
"What do we have?" Damon asked again, eager to get this over with. "Liam?"
Liam stepped forward and put a file down on Damon's desk. He hadn't said anything yet, but the smile on his face gave it away. Looking at Liam's reaction, Damon's lips also twitched into a smile as he grabbed the file.
"I definitely think we got Benzino locked in for sure," Liam said. "The Lee and O'Brien families were chipping away at their army, taking men down in the dead of night. Benzino's pretty much freaking out right now. He hasn't even attacked us and he's already down twenty men,"
Liam was chuckling triumphantly and Damon nodded in agreement. The reports looked great. The Chinese, Irish, Mexican, and Jewish families were doing his dirty work for him, and he didn't even have to lift a finger.
"Alright, and what's the word on Italy?" Damon said as he looked up. "Beau?"
Beau came forward and put his report on Damon's desk. He wasn't smiling or anything, but the excitement in his eyes came through.
"My sources told me Celina is desperate for more backup, but the other Italian families are staying away from this. Especially once they heard you're allying up with all these families. They're afraid of what you're doing," Beau answered. "Do they know how I got them all together?" Damon asked as he flipped through Beau's report.
"The word's out there," Beau nodded his head. "You're running for office,"
"And what do they think about that?"
"They fear you. Hence they're stepping aside,"
Damon looked up and a smirk curved up his lips. That was exactly what he wanted to hear. Putting the report down on the desk, he then turned to the last guy in the office, Dylan.
"So, next is our businesses. What do you have, Dylan?"
"Well, I don't know what to tell you, Damon," Dylan shrugged and chuckled. "Business is great! It's booming, it's expanding, and best of all, it's all legitimate!"
Dylan put his file on Damon's desk and Damon's eyes lit up as he saw the numbers. Even though they weren't making as much money as they used to, they were still making good money. And these were all coming from his legitimate businesses.
"As you already know, you made the visit with my sister last week, our first chain of the coffee company is up and running. We're planning on opening three more chains in the New York and New Jersey areas within the next few months. Our other businesses including the hotels, restaurants, bars, and spas all around the city are operational and thriving too. Our cash flow is good and I predict an increase in our income by twenty percent in the next month," Dylan said proudly, summarizing the content of the report. Liam and Beau turned to him and nodded appreciatively. Somewhat impressed.
"That's great news," Damon said as he put the report down. "Good job on keeping the books alive,"
"That's what I do best," Dylan shrugged again, flashing a winning smile.
Of course, Dylan would be a great financial advisor. Even though he was only running a small-time bar, he was always a hustler. He knew where to find money, how to keep them, and how to make more of them. He was exactly what Damon needed. "Okay, so on my end, the political side of things," Damon said as he got up, pulling out a file from his drawer and handing it to Liam. Liam began reading the file and he gave it to Beau when he was done. Beau did the same and passed it on to Dylan.
"Last week, I met with some people from Bloomberg's mayoral campaign office. They've agreed to take me on. I will be getting an honorary degree from Princeton in Law and Business, and then we're gonna set up campaign strategies within the next few months. So, all that's looking good too," Damon summarized.
As it turns out, running for the mayor's office was actually a lot simpler than running for the mafia seat. He only needed some kind of university degree and support from the local councilman. And when election time comes, he just has to make sure he'll get enough votes, and voila. He's a mayor.
"Bloomberg's office?" Dylan gaped as he read the file. "That's a big deal!"
Damon stifled a chuckle and shrugged.
"Well, we are a big deal," he said coolly, buttoning up his suit.
"Heck yes, we are!" Liam agreed, laughing as he nudged Beau's elbow.
"Alright, if there's nothing else, that's it for this week's meeting," Damon said as he nodded for the door. "I wanna congratulate everyone on a great job. Keep doing what you're doing and keep me updated,"
"You got it, boss," Liam winked and pulled Beau towards the door. They knew why Damon was in such a hurry, and they had no intentions of keeping him back.
"Oh, and one more thing," Damon said before they reached the doorway. "Everything has to be squeaky clean. They can't trace anything back to us,"
Liam and Beau turned back and nodded knowingly.
"Of course," Beau said meaningfully. "We know the drill,"
Liam and Beau then exited the room and Dylan was behind them. Damon grabbed all the files in the desk and put them in his drawer, locking it shut. And just before Dylan was about to leave, Damon called out his name. "Dylan. I need to discuss something else with you,"
Dylan stopped his tracks and turned around, waiting for Damon to continue.
"Close the door, please," Damon said again.
"...Okay," Dylan said as he closed the door. Then he walked back to Damon's desk and asked, "What's up?"
Damon took a deep breath and let out a sigh. He was fully confident just a minute ago, but right now, Damon looked a little nervous.
"It's about that favor I asked,"
Dylan narrowed his eyes for a moment and then the realization hit him.
"Oh, that!"
"You got the thing?" Damon asked.
"Yes, I did!" Dylan said proudly. "Just tell me the day and I'm there,"
Damon's lips curved into a smile as he said, "May first,"
"May first?" Dylan gaped. "That's two weeks from now!"
Damon just kept smiling as he reached for his coat, walking out of his desk.
"Better late than never, right?" he said meaningfully, and Dylan knew exactly what that meant.
"I suppose so," Dylan shrugged.
The two men then exchanged another look and Dylan bowed his head slightly. He turned around and he was heading for the door again.
"Hey, Dyl," Damon said just before Dylan reached for the door handle. "Thanks for everything,"
It wasn't every day that Damon would say thank you to anyone. Dylan realized what a big moment this was. That favor he asked Dylan, it must mean a lot.
Dylan stifled a laugh and turned around, flashing him a big grin.
"My pleasure,"
- Violet -
Violet was sitting in the bedroom with her eyes glued to the clock. It was a little over 10 PM and Damon wasn't back from his meeting yet. They promised each other that they'd have dinner together and maybe watch a show later, but as always, Damon was late because he was busy.
Violet was busy too earlier that day. She went to the coffee shop to check on things and to introduce some new menu items. She was only supposed to be there for an hour or two, but she enjoyed being in that place so much, she stayed until closing time. At some point, she even manned the register. She took people's coffee orders and made their lattes. It really took her back to the good old days. That wonderful smell of coffee and watching people's happy faces as they sipped them brought a smile to her face. Never mind that teaching degree she had from college, she totally wouldn't mind being a barista again.
Hmm. Maybe I can do that until the baby's born. After all, I have all this free time and Damon's always busy...
The idea of going to work every day sounded enticing to Violet. Being in the coffee shop really took her mind off of things. She even forgot that she was seven months pregnant now. Two months away from delivering her baby boy.
Violet's pregnancy has been great so far. Dr. Lee continued monitoring her condition and she said everything was excellent. Talia and Ivy's pregnancies were moving along wonderfully too. They found out a few days ago that Talia was having a girl. Talia was so excited, she started planning the baby's life out.
"Since you're having a boy and I'm having a girl, we should totally marry our babies!" Talia giggled cheerfully.
Honestly, Violet wouldn't be opposed to that. The idea of raising their kids together in this wonderful house where she could make her coffee in the morning and see Damon off to work- that was the fairytale life she'd always imagined. "Just a few more months," Violet said to herself.
Just a few more months and everything would come to an end. Celina would be eliminated, Damon would be a city mayor, and she would have her baby boy in her arms. The end. Happily ever after. "Hey, I'm back!"
Suddenly, the bedroom door flew open and it pulled Violet out of her daydreaming. Damon was standing in the doorway.
"Sorry, I'm late," he said again, sighing as he closed the door.
"There you are, finally!" Violet got up and raced over to him, linking her arms around his neck. "Why do your meetings have to be so long?" she pouted.
"I'm sorry, sweet girl, but it's the weekly meeting," Damon said as he cupped her cheek. "I need to get updated on everything that's happening. And a lot of things are happening,"
"Is everything okay?" she asked.
"Everything's great," he replied.
"Phew," Violet let out a relieved sigh.
Damon let out a smile and planted a quick kiss on her lips. Then he bent down and kissed her stomach before standing back up again.
"So, how was the coffee shop today?"
"Busy, but it's great!" she replied. "Everyone's loving my new concoction, the lavender and coconut milk latte,"
"Nice," Damon nodded approvingly. "Can I try it?"
Violet cocked her head to the side and pretended to be thinking hard.
"Well, I can make it for you, but you'll have to do something for me first,"
"Anything," Damon replied within a heartbeat.
"Anything?" she narrowed her eyes.
"Anything," he reassured her.
Violet paused for a beat and thought hard. Suddenly, a playful smile spread across her face. She grabbed his hand and led him out of the room. Damon couldn't do anything but obey and follow.
Violet led Damon back into his office and to the playroom. Damon let out a chuckle, thinking he knew where this was going. Once inside the room, Violet went to work and started undressing him. Damon let her do whatever she wanted, patiently waiting for her next move. He was grinning wildly as Violet stripped him down to his underwear and pushed him to the bed. But when Violet started cuffing his wrists one by one, his laughter died down.
"Sweet girl, what are you doing?"
Violet kept that playful smirk on her face as she started cuffing Damon's ankles. Damon was left completely vulnerable and tied down to the bed. Violet then sat on his thighs and straddled him, feeling triumphant.
"What?" she batted her eyelashes playfully. "You're not afraid of a little game, are you Damon?"
Damon couldn't bring himself to respond. He was too stunned to speak. Violet took it as a good sign and leaned closer to his ear.
"You're the one who told me... there's no pleasure without a little pain,"
