The Ryland Boys
Chapter 22

It’s been a week since mom passed away, I’ve avoided any contact with anyone. I’d let them leave my meals outside my door and Alison had given me the week off.

I needed it, desperately.

Dialing Amanda’s number, I sniffled and then waited. She answered on the third ring “Norah?” She asked.

I cried, the instant her voice came from my phone, the next hour I stayed on the phone talking to her and eventually falling asleep.

The soft feel of someone brushing my hair aside pulled me from my dream state, I slowly opened my eyes looking to her curly blonde hair and wild yellow eyes. “Amanda.” I said softly.

“Hey sleepyhead, took me a while to figure out how to get to you.” She said staring at my cheek and wiping a tear.

I shut my eyes “She’s gone, I can’t believe it.” I said shaking my head.

Amanda nodded “I know, I bought the soonest flight back. My stupid flight got canceled and then they said I had to wait two days. I tried to get here as soon as I heard.” She said sighing.

I nodded “You’re here now, that’s enough for me.” I said watching her smile softly.

She sat up “Come on babe, let’s get you showered and fill your belly with some gross junk food.” She stated getting out of the bed and going to my closet.

I smiled softly and got up walking to the bathroom showering off and then drying up holding the towel around me.

Amanda gestured to the clothes on my bed. “Pull it on, you’re pale and in need of some sunlight.” She said.

I slipped on the shorts and tank top and then my converse going out the door taking my purse.

We headed down the stairs to the sound of Lucy calling for Lucas to slow down.

Lucy’s been here a lot lately, I wonder if her and Carter are an actual item now. I mean he probably won’t stay loyal, the guy seems to see no fault in cheating.

I’m just judging their relationship to guide my mind away from the truth that my moms gone.

Lucas came running down the hall before he stopped in his tracks and smiled up at me, “You’re awake!” He said happily.

I smiled “Yes I am.” I said picking him up and giving him a hug. Lucas pulled back and smiled at me “I missed you.” He said staring at my cheek.

As he looked to Amanda he smiled shyly “Hi.” He said sweetly. Oh gee, he’s got a crush.

I laughed “Amanda this is Lucas. Lucas, Amanda.” I introduced them and he shook her hand smiling at me blushing.

Lucy smirked “Someone’s in love.” She said c*****g an eyebrow and picking him up off me. She brushed his hair back and then looked up at me “Are you going to the ball tonight? I know it’s not time for you yet but I-well you look good.” She said smiling softly.

I eyed Amanda “Yeah I think I’ll go, it’d be nice to just get my mind off of its normal chain of thoughts.” I said smiling at a proud Amanda.

“Oh Amanda this is Lucy, she’s dating the eldest brother.” I said gesturing to Lucy. The two shook hands and shared smiles.

Amanda leaned into the staircase looking behind her as one of the doors opened.

Mason came down the stairs smiling widely at me “You’re up.” He commented.

I nodded and watched Amanda’s gaze, oh someone’s in love.

Smirking I gestured to Amanda “All thanks to this angel, Amanda. Amanda this is Mason, he plays-” I went to continue but she held her hand out “College basketball, one of the best on his team.” She said gushing.

I c****d an eyebrow at her and Mason grinned down at her “You like basketball?” He asked leaning into the staircase.

She nodded sheepishly “A bit of a fanatic.” She laughed nervously. I chimed in “She could kick your a*s at it.” I said watching Mason smirk and stare down at her “Really?” He asked amused.

Oh this is too perfect.

Amanda bit her l*p and rolled her eyes “I’m not a professional like you but I know enough to maybe get a point or two on you.” She said.

I watched them like a romance film unfolding before me, “You want to play me? I’ve got a court in the backyard.” He said smiling and blushing.

Awe Mase is blushing!

Amanda stared at him and looked over at me “We were su-” I cut her off “Of course she does! Go, I’ll be good.” I said watching her stare between Mason and I.

I c****d a challenging eyebrow at her and she smirked “Lead the way champ.” She said flirting with Mason who smiled and walked ahead.

The two walked toward the backyard and I watched them both look back and give expressions of joy and disbelief.

Looking to Lucy I laughed lightly “You want to go out for lunch?” I asked.

She gave a sad look “Lucas and I just ate. Ask Jax, I think he’s showering. He just finished up training, he’s been in the gym all day.” She said putting Lucas down.

I nodded and watched her chase Lucas out the door.

Going up the stairs slowly, I stood outside the door and waited till the water shut off.

I gave it a few minutes before finally knocking and then dropping my hand back down.

The door opened a couple seconds after and I stared up at Jax, his eyes watching me carefully, he was examining me. “You’re up.” He said with furrowed eyebrows.

I smiled softly “You want to join me for some lunch? My original lunch date got taken

by Mason, she uh she’s a fan.” I said laughing nervously.

His eyes ran over my lips before he nodded “Yeah, let me just pull on some shoes.” He said going back into the room.

I hung out by the door and when he came out, he had his hair all combed and his shoes on. He looked good.

We headed down the stairs and to his Hummer, he drove me to some really cute sandwich place that served us.

I looked over the menu, insane prices, I mean twenty dollars for a BLT? Jesus.

“I guess you pay for the scenery.” I said laughing and looking around the garden.

Jax stared up at me “You don’t like it? We can go somewhere else. My mom loves this place.” He said clearing his throat.

Oh s**t did I offend him?

“It’s beautiful, I love it. It’s just so pricy.” I said laughing and watching him furrow his eyebrows “Don’t worry about the prices Norah.” He said kindly.

I smiled softly and eyed the menu, we ordered and I got the Turkey sandwich with fries and he ordered a roast beef sandwich.

“A bottle of champagne.” Jax said to the waiter who nodded and disappeared.

Champagne?!?

I leaned forward and smiled “Why such a grand lunch?” I asked c*****g an eyebrow.

Jax stared at me softly “I hate that you’d ask that. You shouldn’t ever have to question being dined.” He stared me over “You’re so humble, honest and just beautiful.” He said catching me off guard.

He must’ve realized he said it too because he looked down at his lap rubbing his temple and blushing “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to toss that on you like that.” He said sighing.

I smiled and shook my head “It’s okay, I’m flattered. Thank you.” I said as the waiter came pouring me a glass of champagne.

Taking a drink of it, I watched as he stared at me but looked away quick.

“Are you going to the ball or practicing more?”

I asked him leaning back.

His eyes moved to my face “Depends, are you still going to the ball?” He asked me, as if he wasn’t already stealing my damn heart.

I nodded once “I need to get my mind off the whole thing, I think it could really help.” I said watching the bubbles in my champagne.

“If you’ll still have me as your date, I’d love to go with you.” He said pulling at my heart strings.

Smiling I gave a single nod, “I’d love that.” I said watching him smirk.

We ate our lunch while talking about what happens after Jax wins this next fight. Turns out he’ll have to fight all the fighters in that level before he can move up to fighting with the ultimate world champions.

Scary to think about.

“Thank you for lunch Jax.” I said as he parked the truck in the driveway.

He stared over at me, his eyes falling to my lips before he looked away. “Is it Lindsay?” I asked pushing into something I know I don’t have any business prodding at.

His eyes looked over at me careful, studying my face “No, it’s me.” He said dropping his eyes to my legs. I turned in the seat and looked over his face. “Don’t let yourself stand in your way. If you want something, you can get it. I believe you can.” I said watching him look to my lips again.

Jax sat back and watched my eyes “You’re perfect, in every possible way. The first day you walked out those double doors, I knew I was f****d.” He reached over pushing my hair back “I knew id struggle to keep my eyes off you.” He said smirking.

I laughed “Wow, I thought you didn’t even notice me.” I said staring at his shirt.

“Can I k**s you?” He asked softly, almost so low I didn’t know if I actually heard it right.

I furrowed my eyebrows smiling “Did you just ask to k**s me?” I laughed gently.

Jax smirked “I’d never want to do anything you didn’t want me to. You deserve to choose, to say yes or no.” He said watching my eyes water.

That caught me by surprise, the sudden gentleman like question had been so small, yet it felt so huge. That one question meant so much more than just being well mannered, it gave me a choice when at one point I hadn’t been given one. It meant I was not a piece of a s*x puzzle forced to be used, it meant I had a choice to be something more. In that one question I felt a release, a fear that hung in me was gone in that moment.

Moving over, I straddled him shocking him before taking his face in my hands and kissing him slow and short at first. His hands never moved from my ribs and when I quit kissing, he restrained himself. It was my own pace, my own choice. For once in my life, I had a choice.

“Thank you.” I said softly before kissing him deeper and slow. Our k**s was slow, careful but filled with a need for relief and comfort.

I loved the slow, the steady and careful movements, it was a different feeling. It wasn’t rough and angry, he didn’t grip or grab, not even push or shove.

It felt so…well it felt like the color blue, cool and calm.

A knock on the window shocked us both and I looked over at Alison.

“Oh shit.” I said softly.

“F**k.” Jax said at the same time.

Pushing the door open, I got out and stared at the floor before looking Alison over “I uh, we-” I stared at Jax who got out and looked to Alison “It’s my fault, I was the one who convinced her. She didn’t want to.” He said lying.

Alison stared between us with her face subtle, “Jax go inside.” She said calmly.

He went to say more but she pointed to the door, “Don’t Fire her.” He said to Alison before turning and looking to me before walking inside running his hands stressfully through his hair.

I looked over at Alison who smirked “Damn it’s about time.” She said sighing.

I watched her confused and she lit a cigarette “Oh I’ve been rooting for you two since the day you helped him win his first fight. You’re good for him, not Mason though.” She said watching the doors carefully.

Alison smiled at Jack who walked past us and began parking the hummer, she smiled down at me “It’s nice to see you up and about. I missed your face Norah.” She said kissing my head and then walking inside the house.

I stood there for a bit, confused and then I headed inside and up the stairs to my room.

Jax was sitting on my bed with a stressed out look on his face. I smiled “I think I have your moms approval.” I laughed lightly.

He stared at me with his eyes wide and his mouth slightly dropped “You’re staying?” He asked looking my face over.

I nodded “Yup.” I laughed.

He smiled softly and stood walking toward me, his chest rising and falling quick “Good, because I’ve never had a k**s like that in my life.” He said softly staring down at my mouth.

I smiled “Just k**s me Jax, don’t ask anymore.” I said watching him look to me with a small laugh before leaning down and kissing me passionately.

We moved to the bed, kissing for a while before a loud commotion went on downstairs.

One voice was loud and clear, Lindsay’s.

“Lindsay.” He said softly.

My heart crumpled just a bit, he got up and went out the door. I sat up and headed out the door watching him stand by the top of the stairs “What do you want?” He asked her.

She hurried up to him and took his lips kissing and smiling widely at him. What universe is this b***h from? He broke up with you!

“Jax, I uh…can we talk?” She asked looking at his furrowed eyebrows and stare.

He shook his head and I watched her look to me before she stared at Jax who was staring at me intently.

I gave him a small smile and he stared back down at Lindsay “We’re done Lindsay.” He said stepping back.

She took a step forward “We’re not, Jax….I’m pregnant.” She said proudly.

He watched her carefully “You’re sure it’s mine?” He asked watching her in fear.

She nodded “Its yours.” She said looking to me smirking.

Oh wonderful.

Jax looked over at me and I gave him a soft sorrowed smile, poor guy.

Shutting my door I locked it and headed to the shower washing up, Amanda knocked and told me she was getting ready and coming to the ball with Mason. It sounded nice, at least one of us was happy.

I did my hair and makeup while the room beside mine was filled with slamming doors, shouting and Alison’s cry about how her sons life is ruined now.

A knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts of mom and I headed to the door opening it.

Jax stood with his tie undone and a bouquet of red tulips in his hand.

I smiled softly “Come here.” I gestured and he stepped in looking down at my face while I did his tie for him.

He held the flowers out and furrowed his eyebrows “I hate doing this, but I can’t go with you Norah. I’m not the type of guy who’ll run out on his own mess.” He said sighing while I carefully took the flowers.

Placing them down I looked over at him “I’d be angry with you if you didn’t go with her Jax. She’s the mother of your unborn child, you need to be there with her tonight and every night after that.” I said hating my own words.

Jax ran a hand through his hair laughing nervously “Im terrified.” He said staring into my eyes with his pain in them. I ran a hand over his chest and moved to my tiptoes kissing his cheek. “Be happy, a baby is a blessing Jax. I know I’d give the world up to have one.” I said sadly.

He stared down at me running his hand over the side of my face gently before kissing the top of my head. “You’ll be a great one.” He said before turning and walking to the room beside mine.

I stared at the flowers for a while before shutting the door and putting them into a vase.

Pulling on the red gown, I slipped on my diamonds and then took another glance at myself before walking out the door.

“I can’t believe it.” Alison said dressed in a black dress with her eyes swollen but her makeup still looked flawless.

I smiled softly “Well, at least they’re getting married and no one will suspect they had a kid out of wedlock.” I said watching her stare at me thoughtfully.

She shook her head and sighed “It’s supposed to be you. You’re the one, I know you are! You’re his” She gestured around the front hall “His!” She said getting annoyed.

Giving her a hug, she sighed and hugged me back “I like you Norah. I don’t want you to leave. You remind me of her.” She said softly.

I stared at her confused and she watched me dropping her eyes to my hand taking it “She was too young to be taken from me. But I think God brought you to me, to give her back to me.” She said holding back her tears.

Oh, her dead daughter. God I almost forgot about that.

Carter hurried down the stairs with Lucy “We’ll meet you guys there.” He said waving and hurrying out the door.

Lindsay walked down next and dressed in a glittered grey dress that hung low in the back and flowed at the bottom.

Jax walked out behind her, his eyes avoiding me completely. Not going to lie, it hurt, in fact it hurt like a b***h but he’s just doing the right thing.

“We’re taking a limo.” Lindsay said heading out the door with my date.

I watched them carefully “There goes my date.” I said calmly and sighing

Alison eyed me “Don’t worry, you look so hot you’ll get a thousand men asking to dance with you.” She said proudly.

I smiled and watched Lucas run down and hurry to Alison’s truck.

Mason and Amanda came down, she was dressed in a beautiful light pink dress and seemed so happy.

They were cute together. Best part is that Amanda’s from a very wealthy family too.

I watched them smile and say bye before they took another limo.

Alison looked to Benson who was coming downstairs sighing “Alright, let’s get this night-” He looked over at me “My oh my, you look lovely Norah. Such a shame that you don’t have a date.” He said shaking his head.

I smiled “I’ll be good. You guys go ahead, I’ll get a ride.” I said watching them nod and go off to the truck.

They left and I walked to the front calling an old friend and waiting.

“Norah! Gee long time no talk to!” Gabe said sounding enthusiastic. I laughed “Hey Gabe, Are you still in the limo service?” I asked.

“Yes I am, just say where and I’ll come get you. I owe your mom after all.” He said laughing.

My mom was a nurse, she actually helped him by pretending he didn’t get a room, that way he wasn’t charged for it.

I told him the address and waited outside with Jack who kept looking me over, I smiled “If you keep staring I might think you like me or something.” I said watching him laugh. “You’re just beautiful is all.” He said winking.

I smirked “Thank you.” I watch the limo pull up, a gorgeous vintage Cadillac limousine with white tires.

Gabe got out and looked up at me “Holy s**t you look f*****g fine.” He said with both eyebrows raised.

I walked over hugging him and receiving a k**s to the cheek. “No date?” He asked looking around, then eyeing the mansion.

Smiling I shook my head “It’s the big hotel on Vermont.” I said watching him nod and gesture for me to get in.

I got in the back and he drove me off to the ball, I stared at the chest full of sprite and smirked. This guy.

He used to date Nichole for a good two years, and we became good friends. Cute that he remembers I love sprite.

We parked and he got out pulling my door open and smiling down at me “Have fun Cinderella.” He said jokingly.

I rolled my eyes laughing “Love you kid, stay safe.” I said tucking three hundred dollars into his front pocket and walking out with all the couples.

Making it into the building, I had my photo taken before I walked in and I noticed all the grand looks and designer attire.

People just really went out.

I headed to the drinks and ordered myself a martini, “On the house.” The bartender said winking.

Smiling I took the drink and sat at a bar stool, the music played loud but the conversations where louder.

“Lady in red….”

I turned my head to look beside me, the guy slowly took a seat and smiled over at me, “I’m James, Champion Fighter.” He said holding his hand out.

God he would be a fighter, as if I don’t have enough worries from one hot fighter.

Why does he have to be hot? His stupid button up, the muscle pushing on it and showing, his stupid nice jawline and lips, god he has f*****g blue eyes.

Shaking it, I smiled back “Norah, A babysitter.” I said laughing lightly.

He c****d an eyebrow grinning and ordering whiskey. “You look so familiar.” He said watching my face.

I furrowed my eyebrows “I uh, I came to a dinner a month ago. One of these weird rich people things.” I said jokingly.

James looked me over “You look like the richest woman here.” He said smirking while looking over my dress.

I laughed and shook my head “Did you get hit real hard in the head in any of those fights? You’re delusional.” I said joking.

He smiled wider, and I heard the sound of Lucas calling me before he ran over with Steven “See, she’s here.” Lucas said taking my hand and scowling at Steven.

Steven stared at me with his little jaw dropped “Woah dude, she’s so pretty.” He said in awe.

God, five year olds are adorable.

I smiled embarrassed up at James who smirked at Lucas who stared up at him with his jaw dropping “Norah! Norah! It’s James!” Lucas said pointing to James.

Picking him up, I sat him in my lap “Oh, do we like James?” I asked him watching James smirk and c**k an eyebrow in interest.

“Yes! We do! He’s one of the greatest fighters! Next to Jax. But he’s real good.” Lucas said nodding and staring at me serious.

I eyed James “Oh is that so?” I asked.

Lucas nodded, “I gotta go tell my other friends!” He said squirming and then going off my lap and down to the floor running off with Steven.

“I babysit that kid.” I said pursing my lips.

James smiled over at me shaking his head “Your Jax Rylands girl…the one who was giving him those tips.” He said watching me thoughtfully.

I shook my head “I’m the one who gave the tips but no I’m not his girl. His girl is Lindsay.” I said looking around the crowd and spotting the two.

Pointing he followed my stare and looked to them and then back at me “What an i***t. So you’re single?” He asked confused.

I nodded slowly “Yes, I am.” I took a drink of my martini and he sighed “God damn. This place is filled with idiots.” He said looking around them all.

Laughing I gave him a confused look “Why’s that?” I asked him placing my glass back down.

James looked to them all shaking his head “Well there’s an angel at a bar alone, dateless and single, and they’re all unaware.” He said softly “Poor suckers.” He joked laughing and looking over at me.

He has dimples…oh that’s precious.

I smirked “Oh so what does that mean for you? Are you an i***t too?” I asked c*****g an eyebrow.

James smiled “Absolutely not, I noticed you the minute you walked in, Angel. You’re insanely breath taking. You care to dance?” He asked standing and holding a hand out.

Looking down, I blushed and stood taking his hand and letting him lead me to the middle of the room.

He pulled me close and we began dancing, he spun me a few times and always pulled me back to his chest. His eyes never faltering from my face. It was sort of romantic in a way.

“Mind if I cut in?”

Turning, I looked over at his face. Never in my life did I expect to see him here, he never goes to these things!

Casper smiled at James and I held James’s hand tight, and he stared from Cass to me before shaking his head. “Sorry I’d be a fool to let this girl go.” He said staring back down at me.

I looked back at Casper who laughed dryly “Yes, I know. You do know she’s pregnant with Mason Rylands kid right?” He asked smiling.

James eyed Casper “You need to leave, and don’t bother her.” He said threateningly.

I watched Casper smirk and then go to shove James, only when he did, James didn’t budge an inch. He just took my hand and moved me aside carefully. I walked behind him and he let go of my hand looking to Casper who was staring like a brave i***t.

James placed a single finger to Casper’s chest “You’ll leave Norah alone.” He said like a parent to their child.

Casper got in James face “f**k You.” He said, completely uncasper like.

I stared with wide eyes and watched James nod and then toss one punch to Casper’s face. He collapsed to the floor asleep.

Oh s**t!

Moving to Casper’s asleep and passed out self, I checked his breathing. Chloe came over and looked to me “Sorry hun, he’s had too much to drink.” She said sighing.

I nodded and stood, she helped him up and then to his seat at a table.

Turning I looked back at James who stared at me with a slight smile “So…” he said laughing a bit and standing closer to me staring down at me.

Laughing embarrassed I sighed “I’m sorry, Casper’s an ex. A bit crazy. As for the Masons baby thing, that’s a lie.” I said rubbing my arm.

He smiled “I wouldn’t have minded. Uh any more crazy ex’s I should know about though?” He asked looking around.

I laughed “I hope not.” I said as he held his hand out, I took it and he pulled me back to his chest.

We danced for a good hour while we talked about our likes and dislikes. He surprised me by saying he loved to run and usually ran to calm his mind after he loses a fight.

He was almost perfect.

Looking across the room, I eyed Jax who was watching us intently…

God, James if only you were Jax.

I smiled at James as he laughed telling me about how his little brother keeps staring at us.

Turning, I looked back at the teenager, he had to be eighteen or fresh out of high school, but his eyes where stuck to me gawking.

I laughed lightly and stared up at James “You’re a family man?” I asked c*****g an eyebrow.

He nodded smiling “I hope I have three kids some day, I’m thinking two boys and a girl.” He said thoughtfully and then shaking his head embarrassed.

I smiled “What?” I asked catching his stare, he shrugged dropping his smile “I just haven’t ever told anyone these things about me before. It’s a bit different.” He said staring down at my lips.

The feel of Jax’s lips still laid on mine, and I wasn’t yet ready to let the feeling go.

“Can we sit? My feet are killing me.” I said shyly and he nodded “Of course! I’m sorry I just got stuck in the moment.” He said brushing my hair aside the way Jax would.

God dammit Norah! Quit this!

We slowly walked to an empty table, his brother came over and smiled down at me “Kev.” He said holding his hand out to me.

I shook it “Norah.” I said smiling.

He looked over at James “She’s hot.” He said out loud before shaking his head and sighing “So Hot.” He repeated before walking away and continuously looking back at me.

I laughed while James apologized “He’s a lady’s man.” He said ashamed.

Smirking I leaned over rubbing my ankles “Well, to be honest I thought you’d be one.” I said laughing and switching to my other ankle.

He stared at me “Do I give that vibe off?” He asked laughing.

Dropping my ankle, I sat back “The lady in red comment seemed so cliche.” I said jokingly.

James smirked and stared down laughing at himself “I apologize I just didn’t have any other thing to say to approach you. Sort of like an ice breaker.” He said leaning back and turning a shade of red.

I smiled and watched him softly “It was sweet though, plus you proved me wrong. I’m not usually wrong.” I said laughing.

He looked me over “So, when Jax and I have to fight, are you going to tell him all my secrets to weaken me?” He asked smirking.

The waiter came by with glasses of champagne and we both took one, I took a drink and shook my head to James “Don’t worry, I keep business separate from pleasure.” I said winking at him.

James smiled wide “Tell me about yourself, I’d love to know more about you.” He said leaning in.

His eyes moved behind me and I turned looking to Alison who pulled out a chair beside me and smiled at James.

Oh damn, it’s momma bear.

She eyed him carefully “You won’t sleep with her, you won’t get a quickie in and you definitely won’t pressure her into giving you any information on Jax. Are we understood?” She asked holding a hand out.

James gave her a nod and shook her hand “Understood Mrs. Ryland.” He said politely.

I covered my face feeling embarrassed and giving Alison a look, she smiled and kissed my cheek before standing “Were heading to a nice restaurant in a little bit to eat. You are more than welcome to bring James.” She said winking and heading back to her table.

Staring at James, I slowly dropped my hands from my face hoping the blush died out, “I forgot to warn you about protective Alison.” I said sighing and laughing.

James shrugged and smiled “She’s just protective, I’d be too. She’s been watching us all night, I wasn’t surprised to see her come over.” He said chuckling and taking a drink.

I stared at him thoughtfully “You surprise me James.” I said taking a drink, “I thought you’d be a lot different.” I admitted laughing.

He smirked “You want to get out of here? Go enjoy a coffee or you can come to my place.” He said dropping his smirk and giving me a hopeful smile.

Looking to him for a moment, I laughed and pondered being alone in his home with him. I’m not stupid, at least not this stupid.

“How about some dinner? Just you and I.” I said hoping he’d agree to that.

James laughed lightly “Uh yeah, I just realized you don’t know me so inviting you to my place was a bit scary.” He dropped his head rubbing his chin.

I laughed and nodded “Just a bit.” I said leaning forward.

Alison looked over at me and I shook my head watching her nod and give me a smile. Amanda hurried over and leaned into my ear “if you need anything, anything you call me. Keep your location on for me, I’ll make sure you’re safe.” She pulled back and I smiled nodding.

She kissed my cheek and smiled at James “Take care of her, no driving drunk.” She said but as she went to leave she gave me a worried look and Mason eyed James.

I laughed and looked to James “Something tells me you’re regretting this night.” I said bringing my glass to my lips.

He smiled wide “Honestly, it just fascinates me. You said you’re a babysitter, that’s it?” He asked taking a drink.

Nodding I looked back to see them all leaving but eyeing us as they headed out the door. “Yup.” I responded.

Jax was the last to leave, he stayed sitting in the chair leaning back and eyeing James in the same way you’d eye your high school bully years later.

He stood and took down his glass of whiskey before walking over to our table, my heart was beating insanely fast and as I looked to James I noticed he was watching Jax.

Shit….

I watched Jax fix his coat and straighten his tie running both hands over his hair fixing it. God damn he’s the sexiest man in this f*****g room. Although he was walking at a normal pace, I swear it felt slow motion.

He reached the table and stared down at James holding a hand out and giving a stern stare with a small smile.

James stood and shook his hand, my heart blowing up in fear “Nice to finally meet you Jax.” James said politely, and I stood feeling weird being the only one sitting.

I watched as Jax looked down at my face, his eyes staring at my lips before he moved his focus to James “You too, James.” He dropped his hand before looking between James and I.

Jax looked over my dress and then eyed James “See you Sunday.” He said before sliding something in my purse and turning walking out the door.

James eyed me “Well that went a lot easier than I expected.” He said laughing.

I smiled at him and he gestured for me to follow “Lets get you some food.” He said sweetly.

As he walked ahead I looked into my small purse eyeing the little hand gun.

Oh my god.

Shutting it I eyed my purse and then followed James out the door to a limo parked out front.

We made it to a fancy and nice restaurant, he pulled my seat out and even pushed it in for me.

All night he was a gentleman and asked me about myself, about who I was before I babysat and what I wanted to be. We stayed at the table for almost three hours ordering drinks and laughing.

“That’s insane, would you ever think of fighting Wednesday’s? They do woman Wednesday.” He said leaning into his beer.

I shook my head “I’m very quiet about my talent, I mean if everyone knew I could fight then I wouldn’t be a threat. It’s so much better to surprise them.” I said smirking.

He nodded “I get it, so, did Jax teach you any of his moves?” He asked smiling.

My mind wandered over the possibility of this conversation, “He doesn’t teach me or tell me about any of his fighting techniques. We have a deal he stays out of my business and I stay out of his.” I said laughing.

James stared at me with a small grin “You want to learn some things?” He asked smiling.

I looked to him c*****g an eyebrow “You want to fight me?” I asked him shocked.

He nodded “Ill teach you a few things, but of course you can’t tell Jax.” He said blushing.

Smiling I shook my head “Don’t worry, we rarely talk anyways.” I said watching James nod. “Let’s go, it’s only a couple blocks down. We could get a taxi or walk.” He said paying for the bill on this little tablet thing on the table.

I eyed the cost and felt my eyes bulge , two hundred and sixty dollars, and a eighty dollar tip. Jesus Christ.

James gestured for me to follow and I headed out with him keeping my purse close.

We walked to the double doored gym and he pulled out some keys unlocking it and stepping aside.

Oh lovely, what a place to get killed.

I walked inside despite my sober mind shouting for me not to.

The small gun in my purse told me I’d be fine.

We stepped into the building and I pulled out my phone sending the location to Amanda quickly.

She sent a thumbs up emoji.

Putting the phone away I watched James turning the lights on and pulling his jacket off.

“You can fight in that?” He asked gesturing to my dress.

I gestured to the slit down one side “I can fight in anything James.” I said laughing and slipping my heels and diamonds off.

Placing it all in my purse I eyed the gun and then shut my purse going to the mat.

James stood in front of me staring down at me “You ever fought a guy before?” He asked stretching his arms.

I smiled nodding “Kicked all their asses.” I said watching him smirk.

Stretching myself, I reminded myself why I was going to do this. If this guy is going to ever fight Jax, I need to know his weaknesses. Although he’s a nice guy, I know where my alliances lay.

We stood across from one another and I pulled on head gear with him and a pair of boxing gloves to protect one another.

“Alright I’ll take it easy on you. I don’t need you to get a bruise and then I end up dead in a ditch.” He said laughing.

I laughed nervously “Promise you won’t kill me and toss me in a ditch?” I asked watching him wink at me “Promise. Trust me, I’d never let beauty go to waste like that.” He said.

Oh so if I was ugly then I guess he’d kill me.

We began fighting and he was fighting at a low level, so was I, but as I started to play harder and better he did too.

After a good thirty minutes I learned a few things, 1. He works at his partners pace, 2. He punches with his left arm better, 3. He rolls his shoulders a lot, so he must have some problem with them.

Throwing a kick to his side, I went to punch after but he blocked it and managed to trip me. I landed on my a*s and he pinned me down smiling down at me.

I hated the feeling of him pinning me down, I squirmed and tried to pull free but he just held me down. “James please get off.” I said feeling my heart beat race.

He stared confused but stood nodding “Sorry, was I hurting you?” He asked worried.

I shook my head “I’m just claustrophobic.” I said stepping back and taking a few steady breaths and then yawning.

James nodded “You tired?” He asked.

I nodded and waited for his next response. Obviously it would tell a lot about him if he tried to take me home.

Watching him smile he pulled his phone out calling someone and telling them to come to the gym.

My worry spiked up and I watched James trying to stay calm and collected, hoping he didn’t just call his buddies to come help kidnap me and sell me on the black market or some s**t.

As I grabbed my purse, I thought of the handgun and shook the thought away, I’m not ready to kill someone tonight.

Lights shined in the double glass doors and James gestured for me to follow. I cautiously did and as he held the door for me I watched a butler come out of the expensive car and open my door for me.

Getting in, James got in beside me and looked to the man “The Ryland mansion.” He said sitting back.

I felt like for a moment even if it was a small one, that I could like this guy.

We’ll see….

As the car pulled up to the driveway, James opened the door and got out holding a hand for me to take.

I took his hand and stepped out the car smiling at him “Thank you, tonight was…sweet.” I said looking up at his cute dimples.

James nodded “I hope to see you soon Norah, here’s my number. Just give me a call, anytime.” He said smiling down and staring at my lips.

I took the business card he held out and smirked “A business card huh?” I asked lifting it between my index and middle finger while I c****d an eyebrow.

He laughed lightly “Don’t be stranger, I’d love to take you on a real date. Oh, are you going to the fight Sunday?” He asked nervously.

Giving a slow and small nod, I watched him grin “I’ll see you there then. I fight right before Jax.” He said nodding.

I smiled “Oh then I’ll be there to root you on!” I said a little happier than I should be.

James looked to the door and I turned staring at Alison who leaned into the doorsill watching in her robe and pajamas.

He blushed and looked down at my lips, “Goodnight Angel.” James said leaning down and placing a gentle k**s to my cheek.

I felt my body warm up, and stupid butterflies erupted in my stomach. Dammit!

As he pulled back, I watched his kind eyes and placed both hands to his face holding it before I leaned in and kissed away the feel of Jax’s lips.

If I was going to forget Jax, this seemed like a good place to start. After all, he’s going to be a father and a husband.

I pulled back and watched James’s slight shock spill into a goofy grin. He blushed and laughed lightly before pursing his lips and tucking his hands in his pockets.

Going up the steps to the door, I turned around and gave him a small wave. He returned the wave and bit back his grin.

“Oh come on Juliet.” Alison said laughing and pulling me into the home, “Damn Romeo.” She said eyeing him still standing by his car.

She shut the door and I smiled at her “He’s a sweet, sweet boy.” I said softly.

Alison went to glare but broke into a smile “Your friend Amanda is in your bed, I told her she could stay. She was too drunk to go home.” She said rubbing my arm.

I nodded and she stared at me holding my wrist lightly “You’d never tell him about Jax’s weaknesses right?” She asked worriedly.

Feeling my eyes bulge I shook my head “I’d never hurt him, any of them.” I said hoping she understood.

I gave her a peck on the cheek “Thank you, Goodnight Alison. Try not to sleep too late.” I said hurrying up the steps to tell Amanda everything.

Pushing the door open, I tossed my purse to the chair and shut the door jumping to the bed.

Amanda woke up and looked down at me with her hair a mess and her face running over mine “How was your date babe?” She asked adjusting and moving to one side of the bed.

I leaned into the bed smiling at her “I like him.” I said watching her smile widely “Good, finally a man to sweep you off your feet.” She said shutting her eyes.

Getting up I headed to the shower washing off and then pulling in pajamas and when I laid my head on my pillow I realized I had the stupid gun in my purse still.

Pushing out of bed, I went to the chair pulling the gun from my purse and walking to the door next to mine. Giving it a soft knock, I waited and wondered if I should knock harder. “You’re back.”

Turning around, I stared at Jax as he headed up the stairs.

I nodded and held out the gun to him facing the nose down. “Thank you for the extra protection.” I said realizing how annoyingly hot Jax was.

God, I forgot.

Jesus Christ.

Jax nodded and took the gun “You use it?” He asked standing in front of me and staring down at my smile.

I shook my head “He was sweet, and very gentleman like.” I said staring down at my hands as I entwined my fingers.

He didn’t say anything but when I looked up at his face, I saw his expressions full of confusion “You kissed him…” He said tilting his head slightly to the side.

Placing my fingers to my lips I wondered how he could possibly notice that but he just stared for a while then forced a small smile, “That’s good. You deserve to be kissed.” He said low.

Smart, I’m sure someone’s listening. This damn house.

I watched his lips move as he spoke, my body telling me to just lean in and k**s the guy, but my mind was shouting about how I needed to forget Jax.

“Goodnight Jax, stay sweet.” I said running my hand over his cheek before going to my bedroom.

Shutting the door behind me I stared at Amanda as she laid asleep in my bed.

I’d have to consult her when she’s sober and awake.
