The Secret Island -
CHAPTER 94: Any Worry?
"Celine, why are you so quiet tonight? Talk to me, will you?" Martin spoke out, breaking the silence. They were back to his room after dinner with her friends. And she couldn't find words to say anything. She could only sneak a peak at him. Instead of saying anything, she walked to hug him.
"What is this all about?" He chuckled and hugged her back. She decided to sleep over at his place tonight. Soon, he will move to a condo she helped him choose, a new property he will buy. It took a while for the deal to go through. Martin wasn't the bossy one. To Celine, when it came to big purchases, he seemed to be too casual about it. She saw through the deals and negotiated the price for him. It was also not a coincidence that the condo that Martin bought was precisely in the design and style that Celine loved.
"I just do what I want to do." She replied, referring to her hold on him. She wouldn't let go so easily. Martin chuckled at her strange action and kissed her forehead.
"Do you think any of your staff know that their CEO is such a softy?" He teased her.
Martin didn't know that he had changed so much in such a short time. Not only that he was more comfortable when they were together, but when we were out together, she witnessed Martin laughing and making jokes with people he talked to. He was so charming that everyone he talked to fell under his spell. And believed everything he said.
He didn't know that she didn't exactly like what she saw. It was she who frowned at the sight of women who laughed at his jokes and fell for his charm.
"Don't do this. Stop smiling! You smile at everyone!" She was a jealous type. And Martin still didn't take it seriously.
"I don't smile at everyone, Celine. Just people at work and your friends. You know it's good manners. And also good business." She knew he spoke the truth but was still annoyed by that.
"Don't you like me smiling at people?" He looked concerned after that.
"No! Not at all...." She quickly denied it. She knew the effort it took for him to be the friendly and happy man he became.
"Then why did you-"
"I'm just jealous, Martin." She confessed. She didn't want him to misunderstand her intention.
"Jealous? At me? What's wrong? Did I do anything wrong?"
Celine sighed as she heard his question. He just couldn't read the room. She knew he was the kind of workaholic that changed his personality to fit the job required and didn't understand much about nuances within a romantic relationship. He became happier, but she knew he was still the same man.
"You haven't done anything wrong. How should I explain this...?"
Celine was searching for words, but she didn't know where to begin. Now everything was fine for them both. Looking at him, staring at her attentively, made Celine see the truth about this relationship. It was she who thought about it all too much.
"You didn't do anything wrong. It is my fault, really. I always think a bit too much. It's just that... it used to be just you and me, you know? We go everywhere together. Just us. When there are more than us in our everyday life, I kind of feel weird. I am afraid that our lives won't be the same."
Celine knew that her concern was ridiculous, and at times, he was charming for work. But she loved the thought that he was hers alone. It was difficult to think that she needed to share him with the world. It was selfish of her, but who cares? It was her life, and he was her boyfriend.
Martin was confused. He blinked a few times before making a casual comment.
"... But things change all the time anyway...."
He lowered his head, so they were now face to face on the same level.
And he smiled at her. His smile was so sweet that it made her feel difficulty breathing.
"If I say I love you more every day, and we have been learning a lot about each other among anything else, would that also consider a change?"
"H-Hmm..."
"Our life won't be the same. It will get better. I will make sure that things get better. No, actually, we both will make things better. We are better together, after all." He confidently told her that.
He was right. From the first day we met until today, she has undergone countless headaches and stories that made her cry, but they both went through them all and survived.
"But things we have are already good..." Part of her wanted to settle with what we had, but Celine knew that being the same was also against her nature.
"Well, some things are the same. And one thing I know for sure is the same."
"Yes?"
The handsome man in front of her didn't say anything. He teased her again by quickly kissing her cheek.
"Martin!" She yelled out his name and blushed.
"Haha. You are too red, darling. Alright, I will go shower now." He quickly walked out before she could hit him. She was not used to being teased like that, especially by Martin. Still, she smiled as she looked at his back.
It was a day like this that she had been waiting for. Years ago, she dreamed of living this life, being with him like this, enjoying a few laughs, and living our life together.
She could hear Martin humming a song in the shower.
While waiting for him, she paced around the room and observed the new decorations she had bought for his room. She bought stuff to prepare for his new place, and now Martin's current rented apartment was full of boxes. It was funny to her that it was her that got excited about moving to a new place.
Martin told her that he got used to moving to a new place in the past ten years-from his parent's house to a dorm room, then a small apartment when he first started working, then he moved to a few places until he could afford to buy his own place in New York. His old job also required him to travel a lot. He said he got used to it-getting used to staying at new places.
Celine knew she feared for things that hadn't come.
She was afraid that Martin would go back and become that popular man that everyone wanted, and she would become.... Unnecessary.
It was a ridiculous concern. She knew he loved her. But she couldn't stop that thought since she could see how everyone was treating him and how much people adored him. He might choose a different life when he got more options in life. She couldn't stop and think that he wanted to go back and live his old life.
She walked around Martin's room until she saw the couple's picture of them on his work desk. He said he was inspired by their picture in her office.
This image was recent. Martin had a bright smile. A beautiful smile she could see more often. She was so glad to think that he had changed so much. Suddenly, a phone rang.
Celine was slightly startled and turned to the sound. That was not her phone.
Martin's phone rang, and she frowned once she saw the phone number in the incoming call.
Celine thought she knew Martin, and although she knew him better, a question in her heart was still aching, and she asked if he still had something to hide. Incoming Call...
